I lived in Seoul for two years in my twenties and I'm still benefitting now that I'm in my mid-60s from learning how to take care of my skin there. My routine is 6-7 of the steps depending on how much makeup I have on at night and how my skin feels in the morning. And adding essence back in the late 1990s/early 2000s was a game changer for both me and my husband.

I do a 10 step routine on the weekend and I love it. It's a whole pamper sesh and mental reset for me! Yeah Asia teaches the kiddos pretty early on how to take care of skin. We start from toddler age with the basics, rinse with water and put baby lotion on. Then as we get older, the appropriate steps are added. It is NOT like the Sephora kids lol.

See I love that. I have been wondering if the complete lack of skincare kids are taught in the U.S. is contributing to the Sephora kids situation. Unfortunately I feel they’re mostly on their own with figuring it out so…using expensive glycolic acid serums? (It’s more proof of the importance of education imo!) Yesss a pamper session is so nice 😁

Hi Alice, a Korean girl was saying that the 10 steps of Korean skincare was invented by Amore Pacific and was a strategy designed to buy a lot of products... Hahahaha. And she said that they don't even follow that technique. She says that they don't do double cleansing in the morning and another Korean said that many times there is no big difference between the essence and the serum, but they never skip sunscreen. So they have never really followed that 10-step trend that we Westerners thought they followed to the letter. When the Korean routine was first a trend, I followed it, except for exfoliating every day, but then I realized that many steps were redundant and that was many years ago. A hug and I hope you are very well 🥰

Well I’m living in Korea and lemme tell you that people are obsessed with skincare specifically women, they buy a lot of skincare! But you’re right they don’t use double cleansing in the morning, and morning routine isn’t the same as the evening routine! You have to change the routine throughout the week.

Good evening, Alice 😃 - I kinda love the 10 step method - I don't do a facemask everyday, but all of the other steps I do. I enjoy skincare - I find it relaxing - I do switch it up with double cleansing, it usually depends on how I am feeling or what brand I am using. I do like variety - I will do a deeper "self care" once a week - where I am also using hand masks, foot masks. I use body butters, creams, oils every single day - another one of my enjoyments with skincare. Yes, the thinner to thickest is usually what I follow - however, my Pyunkang Yul Black Tea Toner and the Pyunkang Yul Black Tea Boosting Serum - both have the same consistency (IMO) - so I just go with the flow and it always changes depending on the brand. Enjoy the rest of your night! 🌸💮🌸

The Double Cleanse is nothing more than removing makeup then washing your face, which I’ve done ever since I started wearing makeup 55 years ago. When it comes to toners, essences, essence toners, toner essences, and first essences, I find that following the thinest to thickest order works best regardless of what the product is called. Generally, I use a toner essence or essence toner in the morning, sometimes preceded by a more watery toner or essence when I need extra hydration that multiple layers of the other product isn’t going to resolve. Or I’ll make a DIY sheet mask if my skin is parched. (Thank you for introducing them to me.) At night, I do a first, a toner, and then an essence. And at least once a week I do 7 Skins, which may be anywhere from three to 21 layers depending on how my skin is feeling. (When my skin barrier is compromised, it can easily and happily use 21 layers of a watery, soothing preparation.) I’m one of those who can’t use moisturizer around my eyes. Many eye products are irritating, too. But some face serums work well around my eyes. My skin is aged, extremely sensitive, allergic to a lot of things, and dries out during the day no matter how occlusive the moisturizer is. At night, I can pack on enough that my skin feels good when I start my day, but I have yet to find a routine that works well enough for daytime. Something I’ve discovered in my skincare journey might be of help to others. If a product seems to dry out your skin even though it’s supposed to be hydrating or moisturizing, it may contain something that your skin doesn’t like. I have to be careful of how much hyaluronic acid is in products and what type it is. (Low molecular weight HA has to be used very sparingly if at all.) And aloe has been recently discovered to cause dryness if used in multiple products.

That really is a VERY helpful tip. Sometimes it can seem we are doing everything right, and on a technicality we are but…for whatever reason, our skin objects to a tiny detail in a product. Irritation causes a whole cascade of problems, sadly! Also with you on ignoring the names of products and just using them where they fit best ☺️

idk if I'd say I've ever strictly followed The 10 step routine, it was a permission structure for me to get my exfoliation, my serums to get my acne/oil/pore issues under control while also using moisturizing steps to balance things out--so I've never nuked my barrier.

The essence and extra hydration steps really helped my skin. Never had pimples just super dry skin. Exfoliating and hydration gives me bouncy hydrated skin. I wear makeup so I double cleanse. I have a treatment section most days, but usually one a lactic acid or cosmetic retainal or a pigmentation treatment then moisturizer and I always top with my bioancce sqalene oil. So I guess 6 steps is where I am now. I literally put an antioxidant/vitamin C in the morning followed by a Korean sunscreen then primer and makeup. I might wear a moisturizer in the morning in winter but I live in Northern Florida so it’s not really a long winter

I remember there were books on this 10 step routine. I actually never did all 10 steps unless I use a sheet mask or something it goes to 9. But the max I do is 8; 7 steps in the morning and 8 at night, as I use a lot of toners and mists for my dry skin, and at night I use a lotion, cream and then sleeping mask so that is 3 steps in just the moisturising. J Beauty goes by the lotion->cream method which is why I do that. I wear a lot of makeup, so I actually triple cleanse... i use a point makeup remover for mascara and lipstick, then a cleansing oil or balm to remove the rest, and then a normal cleanser.

I average about 5 steps a day and just that leaves my skin glowing and moisturized enough 😂 pretty early on in the 10 step routine popularity, I watched a video from lab muffin beauty science (I think) essentially saying that the more steps/ products you use, the more you risk reacting to something and I have sensitive skin so it made sense to be cautious. I'm also very cautious about actives preferring to only use 1-2 actives per routine.

Bringing up our '90s toners gives me flashbacks. I used to use a strong Noxzema cleaner, then St. Ives scrub, then once of those Oxy pads, then an astringent toner. (No moisturizer or anything else after that because I had oily skin so Teen magazine told me I didn't need it.) My skin hurt so bad all the time and I was so depressed about having such sensitive skin. As I'm sure you can guess, turns out it wasn't so much sensitive as horrifically inflamed and damaged. I think they have it set up so you can use a code once, then not for X period of time Which is so silly as they send out the same code over and over again (ie the NSHALF code!!) so I gotta log out to order with the code they are promoting!? Bizarre. But after X period of time, it’ll work again. Worst of all, if it’s going to be constructed this way, at least tell us what X equals, stylevana (lol can you tell I’m flustered by the same thing 🤣)

I notice that they are now not letting you cancel an order through their e-mail exchange. Hangeul (the Korean wtitten language) is surprisingly easy to learn! Even Duolingo can teach it in an effective way from my experience

Duolingo is exactly where I’m starting! It’s so fun to assemble the sounds, reminds me of putting puzzles together 😁 That said, I dislike that Duolingo doesn’t teach very basic concepts (ie my lack of knowing the word is “hangeul” lol, and I cringed at myself in this video where I said “letters” 🤐) I noticed it’s best to pair duo with other courses, so that will be the next step. It’s too fun not to continue!!

@@AliceintheRabbitHole Exactly, there's no way it's going to get you to 100% fluency but it can at least get you started recognizing and feeling comfortable with the language to some extent. I'm ngl, I've even tried practicing by reading the packaging on some of my Korean products 😂 It's exciting when you can actually recognize a word from English here and there! (p.s. look up the translation for popsicle sometime. It made me so happy.)

I have sensitive skin so my mom use to slather sunscreen on me as kid but I live in SoCal and we were always going to beach on the weekends. But I did pack it when I used to go on field trips. As I got older sunscreen got expensive and the formulas always irritated my eyes and made me tear up thankfully k-beauty came into my life when I started college and blogging. One of friends does do the 10 step skincare routine day and night and I told her you don't have to do so many steps.

Hi Alice! What are your favorite products/moisturizers for dehydrated skin? I have been using the RNW ceramide serum, the numbuzin no. 3 serum, and either the Illiyoon ato concentrate cream or the olehenriksen peptide moisturizer (among other things). It just seems that my skin cannot hold onto moisture like it used to! I probably need to take some vitamins tbh 😅

I watched one of your older barrier care videos, might have to finally try some stratia or splurge on the haruharu egf serum (hoping for a sale soon🤞🏽)

I use many of the same products that you do, and I add Prequel Skin Utility Balm on top every night as a slugging agent. It's creamy, non-greasy and it also doesn't feel suffocating on the skin. Important to me due to my rosacea. It uses dimethicone as the main skin protectant.

@@AliceintheRabbitHole I figured it out💡I needed a better/stronger Azelaic Acid than the 10% Cos de Baha I was using! I’ve suspected for awhile that the Cos de Baha and the Nineless formulas use an Azelaic Acid derivative as they are both clear serums, but because they’re Korean brands that gets “lost in translation” quite literally 🧐 I’m traveling so I took a sample of the Drunk Elephant Bouncy Bright Facial (10% AA, 1% Salicylic) with me and WHOOP THERE IT IS-redness gone, skin super soft again like when I was using the Paula’s Choice. O i dont really double cleanse all the time in the evening sometimes i just use the farmcy cleansing balm and thats it. Sometimes in the morning i use a milk cleanser miccalar water or nothing depending on how i feel . Exfoliating like 1-2 a week at most my skin would hate me if i did it daily .

Hey everyone! This is so off topic, but I need help and I trust you all. ♡ I have been using differin (for almost 2 years) and panoxyl (for about 2 months). I noticed a great improvement, I have sensitive, combination and very acne prone skin (hormonal and stress, I think) with acne scars, pores, texture, redness... just the fun stuff. However, I feel like the differin gel got my skin to a point, and now it's mostly the Panoxyl doing the job. I have been thinking about trying A313 instead, but I'm a bit scared. Does anyone have experience with both products? I'm on a break now with retinoids because of carbon peels I got done, but I want to start again; I'm just unsure if I should stick to differin or try A313 instead. Thank you!!! ♡

I’d stick to differin! That product seems to be retinyl palmitate (if my source is correct here), which is a bit weaker in comparison to adapalene
