As a heavy vehicle driver, I can tell you, there's a pile of ridiculously over limit camping rigs on the road. Along with under educated drivers. Well done you getting the weight check done and being aware of the issue 👏 👍most people aren't aware of the insurance policy problem either 🙄

Hey guys, when we got our 21.6ft Galaxy assessed with our 80series towing, we had an engineer come at the same time. We were over in the van also, but the engineer got an extra 410kg out of the van because of the heavy chassis and axles. wrote up a new plate, riveted it on and done. Engineer was $550.00. Cheers guys, Brian and Deb

Great episode guys! We’re currently having a full offroad van being built and also setting a Ranger up for long distance touring, early on in the Ranger build I just raised the white flag and got a full Lovell’s GCM/GVM upgrade done on it, there was no way known we were going to be even close to legal without it! There must be so many rigs out there that are running the gauntlet! Keep up the good work you lot! 👍

Interesting video, i warched a lot of your vids and wondered how you were with weight and thought mybe you are over. So many people are totally ignorant . We are just south of Newcastle NSW and doing the Great Ocean Road and yes I watched your video. Today I took my Triton and Crusader Porthos to the weigh bridge at Warner Vale. The GCM of the Triton is 5875 KG and we came in at 4920 so far so good. The ball weight was 320 but max is 310 so that is bad. The Triton was 2660 and that includeds the 320 kg ball weight. The ATM of the van is 2500 and we came. In a 2580 so 80 kg over. I took off the two gas bottles which are around 38 x kg plus a BCF portable solar panel, two folding tables, a Weber mini and put those in the ute. This should decrease ball weight and reduce the ATM to close to the 2500 kgs. We have 190 kg of water and its obvious but draining the tank or at least one would actually solve the problem. Its not difficult to overload the van. Its important because if Im involved in an acccident and im over weight then im. Up shit creek plus and its a BIG PLUS, the insurance company will disown me. The fact the van is over will not be solved by a bigger tow vehicle. The max of the van .is 2500 KG regardless of the GCM. Sadly most people are ignorant of weights. Dji

@elnick.adventures when I watched you Hreat Ocean Road video, it was the first of your videos as I was looking at peoples videos of where to visit. I must admit, I thought they must be overweight with the van all the stuff on the back , the huge tool box , bikes, and the boat, no wonder you told the mother in law she couldn't come.Ok that was a joke. It is funny but also scary that so many have absolutely no idea about caravan weight. There is an erroneous notion jthat big land cruisers are better, however if you have mixed out the 3500kg towing capacity you end up with only around 200 kg left for the cruiser and that is before you have added passengers. We're planning on going on to the West Victorian art trail, I just bought a DJI mini 3 pro drone so should get some good aerial video and also some stills.

Hey guy's I really enjoy your videos and good job on getting the weights looked at. If all Isuzu had to do was whack in some springs and shocks and say the Dmax could have a GCM of 7100kg and a GVM of 3600kg then they would be the top selling tow vehicle and flatten the opposition. There is a reason Isuzu and other manufacturers don't do this, because it's not safe. Definately not having a go at you guys but these GVM upgrades of that magnitude are ridiculous and while quasi legal in some states does not make them safe or desirable without significant engineering to the chassis, brakes, cooling system and drive train.

The big three truck manufactures in the US need to start building RHD full size trucks for the Australian market. We have a lot of choices in pickup trucks up to 14,000 lb/6,350 kg GVM and GCMs are getting pretty crazy. The 2023 F450 crew cab has a GCM of over 40,000 lbs/18,000 lkg (truck is 8,500 lbs/3,850 kg empty).

Very good informative information. Just a note: personally, I wouldn’t sacrifice water or fuels, I would sacrifice other items. Also : I wonder if it’s would be a safer option to get weighed even if you are under weight. For instance. I have a Mitsubishi Triton with a home made camper trailer. I think I would be good to get weighed, even though I’m in no danger of going over GVM and the like, just as a safety during heavy breaking, thus giving a safer stopping distance by evening out the weight across the whole vehicle and trailer combination.

Just because the vehicle manufacturer says your twin cab ute can tow 3500 Kg, doesn't mean it's safe because its not. The towing mass needs to be greater than the towed mass, it's basic physics. Also you should be aiming to have all final weights less than the max figures allowed as being just under isn't good enough. Unfortunately, the greater majority of setups on the road are illegal as they are well overweight, you only need to check the recent date from each states relevant authority from conducting roadside tests. Finally, it's not about your insurance and if you are covered or not, the priority should be to ensure you don't injure or kill other innocent road users, unfortunately there are still way too many caravan users not listening.

Wonder how many cartoon that guy gets for free due to extra weight 😁 I've towed some big things here in UK and rules are different. It's easy to go over but once you have it under, it puts less stress on the tow vehicle too, as well as making you legal. I updated the brakes on mine (cross drilled & grooved), just for piece of mind and got pads that's were less likely to suffer from fade due to heat. Glad you got it under and legal, important stuff that and insurers will use anything they can to get out from paying 👍

We tow pretty heavy here in the US, but so far I haven't had to resort to those kind of modifications to get anything stopped. Downhill I am normally running on the exhaust brake so not putting too much heat into the brakes. Staying legal is crucial given the litigious nature here. I have two trailers, with the lighter one being a 30 foot enclosed car trailer on a conventional hitch and having a GVM of 14,000 lbs/6,350 kg. My other trailer is a 26' flat bed gooseneck with a GVM of 26,000 lbs/11,800 kg. I have been towing both with a 2011 Ram 2500 6.7L diesel that was only rated to tow a little more than the 14k gvm. Even at 14k lbs I was always having payload issues so I sold it and ordered a 2023 Ford F450. Even the 26k trailer is 7,000 lbs/3,175 kg under the tow rating and 5,500 lbs/2,500 kg payload should give me enough headroom so that I don't have to worry too much about pin weight. I don't want to give the police any excuse to pull me over.

If the laws change spend the $$ and go get a post rego GVM GCM upgrade. If you needed to buy a new car then you can get a brand new Dmax but get a lovells GVM GCM upgrage or move to a Ranger, BT-50 etc. Chevy 1500 and 2500 have GVm GCp upgrade options at factory. Jmacx offer GVM upgrade for DS or DT 1500 the older one and working on or already have a GVM GCM upgrade to match the USA for the Ram 2500. Loveels do landcruiser as well but Jmacx is best for LCs

The diesel Ram 2500s are a tough combination because the extra weight of the engine (6.7 Cummins is 1,100 lbs) eats into your payload. I have been dealing with it for years with my 2011 Ram 2500 diesel and finally sold it in September. If you are thinking of a 3/4 ton (F250 or Ram/Chevy/GMC 2500) it is definitely worth the little bit extra to go to a 1 ton SRW (F350 SRW or Ram/Chevy/GMC 3500 SRW). If you are really concerned about weight the DRW trucks all have a GVM of 14,000 lbs/6,350 kg and tow ratings of over 30,000 lbs with a diesel.

Hey guys we individually weighed i teams we got rid of and shuffled things around in the car and got rid of the heavy fridge in the car so we could put more items in the car. We got rid of 190 kegs. So can have water tanks full now plus all the Jerry’s were full and the boat fuel so there is about 60kg there. We never travel with full water tanks only on remote trips as Maxy sucks more fuel and there are generally plenty of water points we will be looking at increasing the vans atm in the future though;)

Don't really agree with the guys analogy that a light tow ball is the reason for sway. there is absolutely not rule of 10% on the towball, it has been proven by people such as Robert Pepper that too much on the towball or too much on the rear of the trailer is a reason for sway and the best way to correct the problem is to have the load in the middle above the axles. Towball weight is to prevent the car and van from separating the van has on its compliance plate the towball weight stick to that or a bit above and you should really be ok.
