Are Vintage Cars a GOOD Investment?

I've warned my audience countless times about the dangers of buying things we don't need, but what about buying cars? Do cars appreciate enough over time where it becomes a good investment, and if so what are some things that a buyer should know when purchasing a unique model car?
We head back to Walt Grace Vintage to get these answers sorted!

Appreciating assets are the best investment. Find joy out of them in the current day and then if you want to sell later down the line, will end up with more money.

Maybe! The classic car market is very similar to the art market. There are the grandmasters and then there is everything else. If you purchase a vehicle that you love and want to enjoy on the weekends then go for it. But if you purchase a vehicle believing that you or your estate can resell for a greater amount then you must stick to the grandmasters. Anything else you must ask yourself is this something the next generation will purchase. The one problem with vehicles that make them unique is that they do not get better just setting in a garage. Just ask Jay Leno what it takes to keep his collection in driving condition.

Apparently everyone's forgetting what happened to the price of collectable cars after the mortgage bubble popped in 2008, cars on Barrett-Jackson that were selling for $150,000 a year before wouldn't meet a $70,000 reserve price when they tried to sell them after 2008. Same thing happened with collectable Harley's, the market for them tanked and hasn't come back even close to the pre '08 prices, a lot of people lost their shirts who'd tied up investment money in collectable vehicles.

Love the breakdown. With what I’ve learned over a decade investing, given enough time, solid investments have the potential to double the initial principal amount, but many investors are instead attracted to the lure of high yields in short periods of time despite the possibility of unattractive losses before even getting out. So the onus is on newbies to beware.

@David Bucker As long as you diversify your portfolio, any single stock that you own shouldn’t have too much of an impact on your overall return. If it does, buying individual stocks might not be the right choice for you, as you can also try out the Roth IRA or I series bonds. Even index funds will fluctuate, so you can’t get rid of all of your risk, try how you might. With help, these are achievable. LEVI CLEMANS, a pro Fiduciary oversees my portfolio. With all due respect as for cars, watches and other collectables, I warn you and everyone else to not go off the deep end with collectables. You are a brilliant and gifted investor and can attest what happens when there is a major recession especially if it is protracted. Expensive possessions go to the bottom of priority list; values tank. Also there are major downsides to cars in addition to market fluctuations; upkeep, storage, insurance and licensing; all translated into financial drains.

You can tell by Kevin's questions and reaction to the facts presented to him that Kevin is not a car guy. Nothing wrong with that... I consider myself a "car guy" and can tell you it is very difficult to make money with cars. Best advice has always been buy what you like and if you get lucky and it appreciates just consider it a bonus. I remember him years ago on TV telling a story about how he bought a 911 and only owned it for a short time as his wife told him he looked ridiculous in it.

My 09 Mustang GT with 153k miles on it, and in decent condition for a 14 year old car, went from 6k to 13k because of the price hikes. Cant imagine what it will do when I finally get it put back to spotless again. Though I'm also not after what it can get me in terms of resale, I just love that car too much and I dont have any interest in saving it for the next guy. Which it already gets offers as it is currently fairly often.

Not really an investment, the maintenance is expensive, even if it’s just in storage. That’s another thing, adequate storage to preserve the paintwork etc. Then, you need to wait a long time, predict future trends, and hope they’re not suddenly taxed or otherwise slapped by government action.

FABULOUS VIDEO! I have "Mixed Emotions" about the "low Mileage" cars... On the one hand... they are almost like NEW, even 20+ years later... But on the other hand, you have a REMARKABLE Vehicle, with Amazing Performance, that often costs amazing amounts to develop and engineer... That is never "Appreciated" from the Driver's Seat !! WHY DO all that development and engineering, and not USE IT? You may as well just build a Clay Designing Model/Mock-up, and place it on a Display Stand. So, because I LOVE to DRIVE performance vehicles.. I can hardly imagine leaving such cars parked in an air conditioned warehouse or 'museum display', or even my Living Room...

This is a prime example of what TRUE car enthusiasts despise. If someone says a Countach is a horrendous car to drive I’m done listening...this immediately tells me that this person knows nothing about the relationship one can develop with a flawed but well engineered piece of machinery. Developing that with one of these amazing cars can be one of the most wondrous events a person can have. I do feel for people that haven’t had this epiphany yet in life as it is exciting and therapeutic.

Exactly. Cars are not perfect and all have draw backs, But this is what we enjoy about the vehicles we get attached too. I currently own an 09 mustang GT and love the fucking hell out of it, despite it being made of horrible materials and isnt as fast as it could be. And my last car was a Supercharged 4 cylinder Chevy Cobalt SS, Thing was a massive money pit and made of even worse materials than my mustang. However.. It was actually a pocket rocket and would easily do speeds of 120+ with 0 issue( I remember doing a sustained 135 mph once on a section of a Kanas interstate between 2 towns. It felt very composed shockingly.). And after 5 years, I've since changed my mind about it being such a POS, and subsiquently. I would like another go at one just for the hell of it and to bring back memories.

To be fair, most people that drive the Countach, or any Lamborghini from the 80s and 90s pretty much all say it feels like the car is trying to kill you the whole time. Which I what I love about it. But from a normal person's perspective, it probably is a horrible car to drive.

The reason why we broke out in February was because we had news of Tesla buying $ 1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin, which served as a major catalyst in further creating new all-time highs. Up until that point, we were on a downward trend and eventually trading sideways, like we're seeing now. It wasn't a technical breakout that drove Bitcoin to new highs in February, it was more fundamental news of adoption by major institutions. We need to see more of that if we're going to repeat the growth that we saw last month. Until then, I have a feeling that we're going to be trading down and sideways, looking at the current situation I would suggest tredlnq with Daniel Wright to.make more gains from all this as I have made over 8btc in just 3 waeks of trading with hlm, here are his details on Tel- gram ( @Danielwrightfx) for his assistance on strictly crypto related.

Of course, if you get a certain amount of enjoyment from the car on top of the investment aspect then you need to factor that in but that's hard to quantify.

It depends on the car. The 944 for example is not entirely expensive for parts, though labor can cost slightly more than a typical mechanic due to hours spent. A clutch repair in the 944 is an expensive one for that car, usually around $2500-3500 for clutch, flywheel, gaskets etc for the job all depending on your mechanic. The Countach would cost around $10k for the same clutch repair given the engine has to come out, and when you replace the clutch you most likely want to do all the seals and flywheel as well. Storage fees vary on quality of storage - temp controlled/ non temp controlled and your location.

I will usually only buy things and invest in things that I actually have a passion for, cars are one of those things. The beautiful thing about the car market is you can generally be 100% sure weather a car you buy will go up in value or go down in value, the problem usually comes with you having enough money to buy the right car. For example the honda s2000 is increasing in value exponentially after in recent years it hit the bottom of its depreciation curve and started to increase in value. I would explain a little bit more on the value increase etc, however if you don't like cars don't invest in them.

3 to 5% Gross appreciation maybe, then you factor in insurance, high cost of maintenance for vintage cars if you aren't a mechanic, storage, so you are lucky to be at 2%. I think for most car people it's the enjoyment of the car, the financial appreciation secondary. Nonetheless fun video to watch.

what about "holding costs"? They ain't spending more than the 3~5% just in maintenance cost, insurance, etc... !? it needs to appreciate about 8~10%/year minimum otherwise it'll take a decade to be profitable. Seems like it's just another "bank". *The only way you'll make money is buying under market value like anything else you flip IMO* writing this as a car enthusiast from birth...

Agreed. Properly servicing a vintage Porsche means big bills. Some vintage Ferrari's need egregiously expensive, periodic "engine-out" services even if they aren't driven much. If those services are skipped or done by a non-reputable shop, then resale value can be significantly impaired. Finally, the collector car market is fickle. Some cars are red hot, then go cold. Buy high, sell low and it's a loss. The ultra high end collector market ($500k, million plus) is a bit of a different story. That involves the concours quality cars bought by the ultra rich, where money really is no object, and the price ceiling can climb dramatically in at the right auction.

Great investment as long as you have the means to properly care for them. If you buy a numbers matching, og paint, survivor camaro rs/ss for $200k and stick it in a regular garage for 20 years hoping itll be worth over $700k, more than likely its going to rust because a normal garage isnt great at keeping moisture out. Its gonna have animals in it. And it probably won't run sitting that long, gas will go bad, seals can rot, etc. You need to be able to afford a proper place to store your car, you still have to maintain the car wether you drive it or not. It needs to be started every so often, new oils and gas if its sitting awhile, maintaining a rodent, animal free area, etc. I know the cost of ownership of some older Ferraris, even if well taken care of and minimal driving can still cost upward of $50k a year to properly care for a car you might only drive 200 miles that year.

I used to see him race in Añasco, but he mostly drove a Ford Escort brush painted in canary yellow. We would go every month to see if he would prevail against Manolo Freire's metallic blue 911. I don't have to say who we were rooting for.

having a vintage vehicle in your garage is like having a cash reserve that you can enjoy, unlike money sitting in a savings account. It may not appreciate, but it is relatively safe and liquid. It is generally a losing proposition from a financial standpoint, but you can't put a price on the overall experience. Money is to be enjoyed, not hoarded.

1986 Porsche 930 turbo was $49720. If you took $50,000 and put it in the S&P 500 in July 1986, it would now be $815,000 without reinvesting the dividends. With the dividends reinvested it would be $1,783,000. I love cars, I'm a car guy, but cars are like a vacation or a nice dinner. You buy it to enjoy it and get the experience. The only cars I can think of that probably beat the market are the Ferrari 250GTO and the McLaren F1.

You must not be a car enthusiast to not understand it. Big block cars produced alot of torque compared to the small block ,and weight more, so the cars are front heavy and therefore dont trunk as well. Basically it comes down to uneven weight distributions. But they sure are fun to do burn outside in.
