Are unrealistic body shapes bad?

Ойындар

For the last 30,000 years humans have been creating art with fantastical and unrealistic looking humans. So why do so many people and institutions see this as a modern problem that requires censorship?

What's super unrealistic is having all similar or same body shapes, and especially just shapes that all conform to certain peoples aesthetics. Just go outside and look at everyone. No one looks the same. Many look drastically different. In a world where everyone looks the same, there is no beauty of any type, just the same old thing, and eventually everyone would be bored to death of it all. lols

True, but I can't help think most characters in adult games all end up looking the same anyway. I have no problem with 'unrealistic', but variety is far nicer.

Its especially frustrating how different body types are so incessantly shoe-horned into specific archetypes. Why does the curvy or mature woman ALWAYS have to follow the MILF archetype? Or the smaller stature woman the young innocent archetype? Its especially annoying with how incest is used as short-hand for interpersonal relationship dynamics. Its such a frustratingly shallow depiction of sexuality and sexual content.

There is art from ancient Egypt that depicts men with phalluses that are probably about three feet long, so this is literally nothing new. lol. I find it fascinating how the ways we exaggerate the human proportions have evolved over the millennia.

A lot of questions like this about a vast variety of games and media of all types and genres breaks down to… …there should be a variety of games or movies or media for a variety of flavors. There is no one thing that is good or bad for everyone. If some people like thicc girls or monsters or whatever, there should be a game/movie/novel, etc for them. There are probably very few flavors that should not be served in a way that victimizes no one.

The thing about "unrealistic" bodies (or women in general), mostly in terms of media coverage, is that much of the time they are naturally possible but just aren't relatable. For example, the original design of Lara Croft's body, at least after the tech improved past the pyramid boobs, wasn't too far fetched but definitely didn't represent your 'average' woman. I personally don't see this as harmful but do understand that some people want to see more representation within the medium. I also believe that the depiction of physically 'idealized' women in video games is a bit overblown, as is the "developers are making women ugly on purpose" discourse. It also completely glosses over the fact that men have largely been physically 'idealized' in their designs as well. How many chiseled, square jawlined, 6-pack having men with a full head of hair and smooth chest do you see in your every day life? I also have to say how much I appreciate hearing the art history perspective as I'm an artist myself and every time this discussion comes up I find myself being the 'um, actually...' guy while pointing at the Venus of Willendorf, Shunga, and pretty much the entire Renaissance period.

Speaking as someone who lives, loves and socialises in the form of a Cyclops girl via virtual reality, I found the choice of thumbnail for this one quite amusing. The notion of my silly one eyed face being an "unrealistic beauty standard" or any such thing, did make me chuckle. VR would probably be an interesting extension to this subject, since it goes beyond mere depictions of idealised body types, into actually inhabiting, interacting and identifying with them, whilst having total control over said form. It somewhat changes the dynamic where the typical conversation asks "are depictions like this bad", more into, "is it acceptable for you to look like this". And it also shifts that common debate about how appealing video game characters or similar should or shouldn't be, because unlike a cast of NPCs, basically every person on Earth does innately want to "look good" to some degree. And when given the choice via VR, basically no one deliberately chooses to present themselves as an "ugly" character, even if their choice of "flavour" may not appeal to everyone equally. And ironically this does also happen to have a certain repelling effect on outsiders, who when first encountering these spaces and communities, see crowds of "over sexualised" avatars, and assume that's all there is to the scene. It's difficult for them to imagine a functional social space, where everyone just happens to look that way, because why wouldn't they? The concept of beauty standards almost evaporates in VR, because unlike in some fashion magazine that might receive criticism for showcasing only genetic lottery winners, when living in the digital realm anyone can accomplish any look. Even if the look they choose is a strange one eyed visage, that occasionally makes people recoil in surprise.

Very interesting discussion, maybe it wouldve been easier for mom to comment on the different body shapes if you prepared some pictures? I think that would help her with commentary. What I think is interesting is that with animal-girls the girls also have the characteristics we associate with the animal. Like a dog-girl is loyal, and a catgirl is playful. Eugen Sandow was the first bodybuilder, he actually measured the proportions of the greek statues and trained himself to have the same proportions. While the statues are obviously idealized and exaggerated, it is possible to gain such a physique. Although, of course, it requires hard work and genetics to get there. What is interesting is that with the statues (and what Sandow trained for) is that the pectoral muscles arent very well defined. Natural full body training (or most manual labor) does not train your pectoral muscles very much. So in a sense, the statue's physique is functional as the muscles hard work create are represented. In art you draw a person by drawing him/her X heads tall. 7.5 for "normal" people, and 8 heads for a heroic figure. I would slot The treasure of nadia bodies slot in a similar style. The characters represent the edge of the human physique, ideal body +10%. Compared to something like demon deals where the character breasts thrice the size of their head. Also I am really suprised you never mentioned supernormal stimuli. Heck, when I looked up the english term, the picture used on the wikipedia page is the venus of wallendorf. (already reading my comment I might seem a bit critical. But Im not, I really love what you're doing. I think your channel and podcast are on really interesting topic but sadly it rarely gets talked about.)

Society tends to exaggerate everything. Things are either worse than they ever were or the best they've ever been and it just depends on what side of any subject you lean towards as to what you believe. Even the stories people tell. Ask most older people and they love to tell you how much better it was-- back in the day. Art is and always will be subjective. I personally prefer models in these games to skew more to the realistic than the over-exaggerated. Someone else will think the opposite and that's fine. Imagine a world where everyone only like the exact same things. You have what sounds cool ass parents. I couldn't imagine asking my parents to talk about this subject. But there seems to be no proportion these days. It’s all or nothing. No balance. But for gaming to basically eliminate all attractive female characters in AAA games as it’s seen as sexist, yet it’s still ok to have stereotype buff men in games - the hypocrisy is infuriating. I have noticed that jiggle physics sometimes seems to be turned off in consistent reality, as well as breathing, for myself and others. Nurturing and compassion are two different things although a nurturer who is not compassionate enough is likely to be dangerous to the nurtured. Big breasts and in fact breasts in general are not needed really as nipples will do if they are long enough and one still has functional mammary glands therefore breasts must be a sacred indicator of nurturing capacity or worship of the nurturing capacity, although the stereotype is that men do look more often and for longer at bigger breasts, perhaps as there is more to read there and it takes longer. But what do witchy glamours do with breasts, and are observers reading what they should be or simply taking notes or shorthand, perhaps for their partners nurturing skills and their own? Does this change depending on natural, surgically enhanced or virtual sizes of breasts? Well some art afficionados can read the hidden meanings in a painting, sometimes only with a background knowledge in that genre or style or school of art or of the artist and their work. Sometimes, though rarer perhaps, people can understand the symbology and meaning and message of art without a large or eloquent or skillful or educated background in that art or art in general although some people whether they have had education or not find it difficult to be eloquent in describing their understanding of anything in at least some situations as there is many imperfections in communication and many have certain and fundamentalist views of what facts are and what opinions are and what arguments are and what fallacy is and what is an explanation and what is manipulation and what is danger and what is safe and when triggers change those and other factors. Is social profiling with learning and entertainment and casual nicety exchange places and tribal competition zones alone or with family, friends, mentors, associates, authorities, walls, nightclubs, shops, picnic zones, forests, under the ocean, somewhere in space, in the head or elsewhere and devices and apps and websites like social media and other less obvious places much much worse that groping a strangers breasts to check nurturing ability to find positive and negative information about it for self or others? And how do we know what is safe or sabotaged or unsafe with or without it? How many problem spotters have become unrealistic or invasive or naive or cruel or problem creating solution makers and who is profiling the profilers and now that people know about profiling what are they doing about it and who is it giving advantage too and is it like sports science and is there sabotage using the information or refusing to allow the information to be used?

I think unrealistic body shapes are of course not a negative thing at all, there can be many valid reasons for them, starting with the two biggest ones: stylistic artistic decision and preference/fetish-based. But also just because. However as someone who has a specific body type that I love (adult women with small breasts -or absolutely flat chests, that's great too) it's a real shame that 99% of adult games have what to me seem like too big breasts (for my tastes specifically, I'm very happy for people that enjoy them ofc). I'm not joking, I've spent all my life playing and searching in both the biggest and most niche adult forums for games with body types catering to my tastes and I've only found a handful compared with the thousands. As an example, whenever I watch a video of yours (and I've been subbed since almost the start, I think since the 'Why is NTR so Popular' video) the most common experience for me is that none of the girls' bodies I see do anything for me. Or best case scenario the boobs are too big 95% of the time, the characters look too much like little kids like 4% of the time and the remaining 1% is what I like. I occasionally I'm lucky to find games where all or most of the scenes have small breasts, like Soldier's Life, Detective Girl of the Steam City, Rogue-like: Evolution, Good Girl Gone Bad and Aurelia. But most of the time I either play a game with full boobs just to experience the scenes with the one small breasts character (which are still somewhat rare games) or I just go for highly procedural games like Lilith's Throne or fully customizable ones like Brothel King where you just use your own saved images or just pure text games. And of course its all also contingent on if I like the genre enough (sadly full furry doesn't do anything for me, or violence where she doesn't end up liking it, etc etc). Oh, or pixel games without CG images like D.P. and NTRPG. The Last Sovereign was one of my favorite games many years ago... until she started adding images and most characters ended up having huge boobs (as long as they were pixel blobs I could imagine my preferred boob size, once there was CG involved my boner died lol). Occasionally I'll just have to mental-gymnastics myself into playing a game and somehow trying hard to be blind to the stuff I don't like. For example Wolf's Dungeon might be too violent and punchy on the girls for me to even try it but I managed to enjoy some of the scenes in Crimson Colosseum. Or well, the usual "the creators clearly intended this teen-coded character to be quite young but I'll just imagine she's 18 or whatever in my head" (like in Detective Girl of the Steam City). At least I don't mind the faces being stylized at all! Imagine if I also only liked games with realistic faces lol. As long as they are able to convey emotion, realistic and stylized (both anime and western) are great to me! Also imagine if I only liked flat chested women. One dude once told me that was his thing. He only knew of 1... not game, 1 mod with it. Poor dude. He's probably just reading fanfics or whatever most of the time. The good thing is that through the years I've found many others like me and whenever we find each other we share our (small) lists of games with small breasts we know of, and while they are usually pretty similar we usually come out of it with 1 new game to try or even 2. Anyway, if you ever do a 'Games with Realistic Or Uncommon Body Shapes' (or something like that) we'll love you!

Body shapes should fit the narrative. Making something "relatable" for the sake of it is hurting the narrative. I don`t need a skinny God of War. Same way i don`t need a Chubby Lara Croft , it is not fitting. Original character, original story can come in all shapes or forms. But the industry needs to stop changing beloved characters and forcing agendas onto gamers. Best strong females characters are without the bs written onto them.

There is no such thing as unrealistic body shapes, aside from the extreme ones in some niche hentai or outright inhuman shapes. Some may be rarer than others, but I have yet to witness a fictional body type that I haven't seen in real life as well at least once. The variety is just unevenly spread across the world. What really is bad is the body shaming of voluptuous people that happens as a reflex of this whole "unrealistic" drama, which only exacerbates even more the real life issues they already deal with.

I'd be more inclined to say 'uncommon' rather than 'unrealistic'. There's certainly people out there who look like game characters, but personally I don't really like seeing the same type over and over because it gets dull. Maybe other people have more narrow interest in body types, but I'd rather see unique shapes. Where's the 4-foot tall, stocky, bearded dwarf lady? Why can't we have a stick thin, no-breasted tree lady? An androgynous bird-lady, or hyper-sexual bee Queen with six breasts? Instead it's just the same models used over and over. Put a paper bag over their head, and could you tell the difference between Lara Croft, a character from Being a Dik, or Captain Hardcore based on body shape?

If i create something based on plot, character designs are important. If i make a horror, grotesquely designs are needed. For slice-of-life, attractive designs. Fighting games, toned bodies. It's simple to match what makes sense. These DIE gestapos should leave us alone to enjoy what we have for Fs sake.

Counterpoint: that philosophy you are listing off isn't how character design has worked for a lot of game development history, and that is especially true of feminine characters. For instance, those toned bodies in fighting games? How often have the women in those games been E cupped bombshells with thicc thighs and asses, instead of more realistically toned with B-cups at most? Further, do you agree with the people raging at the Horizon series for accurately depicting what a woman in a hunter/gatherer society without makeup would look like, that it's "DEI gestapos ruining games," or do you think that the character design makes sense based on the plot of the game and the context of the lore?

No. It's not bad. These so called "unrealistic" body types should be something that we should STRIVE to be, to encourage us to better ourselves. It's sad, but those who complain the most about "unrealistic body types" and moan on and on about wanting to "see themselves" as the characters? If you take the time to look them up, one will notice a... certain trend. It won't take such a leap in logic that all these complaints they have is rooted in jealousy. Instead of working on themselves to get more fit and beautiful, they'd rather gaslight everyone to lower everyone's standards as to what beauty is to just make themselves feel better for a second, smh. 🤷‍♂️

Expecially hypersexualized female bodies You're straight up saying that the process of "working on themselves" for women condenses to heavy body modification through breast and butt implants and corsets for a thinner waist I mean, lessgo(?), it's a very "transhumanistic" approach but I doubt that surgery is what you meant by "working on themselves"

And not to reach those levels like those we see in games, just slowly improve themselves. They don't have to work to ruin other peoples enjoyment, and even if they accomplished that they still won't be satisfied since they'd still have to face reality.
