here's a fun fact: there's an entire field of math dedicated to ensuring that traffic lights stop as few people as possible, because updating the firmware on a traffic light is unbelievably cheaper than destroying the intersection and installing a roundabout

Normally, cars slow down on 4 way intersections even if its empty. But if a traffic light is in place, and its green for them, they dont slow at all and go straight past it.

@@zitronenwasser If you have too many cars it can get bogged down at a 4 way intersection. The best solution is often a roundabout, but if there isn't enough space for one, a traffic light can improve the flow of traffic.

Traffic lights are really good at T-junctions, especially if traffic coming from the I part of the T only ever turns right. This is because cars can make that turn without causing the traffic light to change. So the state of the traffic light never changes, and cars either fly straight trough the top of the T without slowing down, come from the top of the T and make a left hand turn into the I of the T without slowing down, or come from the I of the T and make a right hand turn without slowing down too much. This greatly increases throughput and is perfect if you have traffic from two sources going to one destination, or the inverse.

On T-junctions cars only slow down a little even without a traffic light, meaning that using one only improves things ever so slightly. Imo theyre more useful for busy intersections with not enough space to fit a roundabout

I put in traffic signals for a living it’s actually either using radar to count cars and let them through or we put loops of wires under the road that create an electromagnetic field that will tell the controller when something or enough metal goes over that’s why motorcycles get stuck at older lights longer because there’s not enough metal for it to disrupt the field stuffs weird

I lived in a town where one of the major intersections was a 4 way with traffic lights, but one of the ways was just someone's driveway. I don't remember if they had lights to get out, but they had lights to get back in.

From what I've seen (which is limited, and I haven't had the opportunity to play this yet) is that traffic lights can be good, but they are situational and difficult to use, and roundabouts are almost always better, or at least as good. Realistically it might be better to give unlimited traffic lights on all maps for a while, which would let people learn to use them in a way that doesn't cost as much, and in six months or so then they could be changed back to how they are now where you have to choose them instead of something else.

For me, traffic lights serve one purpose, making the game harder! I guess they can add a "hardcore" difficulty mode in which you have to use traffic lights at junctions? I don't know maybe adding chances of accidents happening at junctions and traffic lights as a way to reduce those chances?

Nah before the recent buff, they were literally the worst option, having a 4 way intersection without a traffic light was faster, pretty sure they recently buffed them to change faster tho, but also made 3 way intersections slow cars too, not just 4way

From what I have observed, most downsides of both roundabouts and traffic-lights are cause of having multiple of the same colour businesses on a road network. When a business gets a pin, it will select the nearest house with an available car to give that errand to. The problem arises when all houses of a certain colour have no cars left. The cars don’t exactly follow the behaviour of going to the closest business with a pin. (such as, in the last video, that one car right next to the failing business not going to it). Most of the challenge of using both roundabouts and traffic-lights seems to be from not making hindrances when you try to use them, but I don’t think this would make traffic-lights a good idea to use anyway.

Traffic lights IRL have multiple redundant sensors which check to see if vehicles are coming in every direction, if you’re coming to an empty traffic light junction, the lights will more than likely switch green for you (not ALL lights work this way, some are still just timed between changes)

I think I got fucked over by a traffic light in a neighborhood close to me because I wasn't close enough to the stop. I was sat there for almost 10 minutes waiting for it to change, even though there was no traffic from either direction for almost 7-8 of those minutes. It was only when I was contemplating driving through the red (which inadvertendly caused me to move up a bit and most likely in the way of the sensors) that it finally changed. Screw me for stopping behind the white line before the pedestrian crossing, I guess lol.

Note: When you have an extra highway and you place it at the new end location, but with the SAME starting location (near the houses), it's not used, as it kind of "overlaps". Until it's fixed, you need to place a new one temporarily at another starting position near the houses, and when the 1st one is removed, place it again with the correct end

You need to use the other side of the double business, so there is an entrance-exit situation or entrance and exit of each color on their respective side

Both in real life and in the game, how they are designed with the flow of traffic determines whether a roundabout or traffic light works better. Rule of thumb is fewer turns is better and roundabouts are generally best at this by nature, crazy aspect of engineering and myth busters did something similar racing a UPS truck that never made left turns, only efficient straight and rights. Space efficiency is biggest upside to traffic lights ~flow~ of traffic matters. 2 businesses driving in parallel can efficiently share roads :p TLDR right turns are OP

The traffic lights are definitely much better now. It’s just that we’re still looking at the map the same way and completely missing out on great locations for traffic lights
