Are Tie Clips Still In Style? | How To Wear A Tie Clip
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Are tie clips still in style? Were tie clips just one of those menswear trends or fashion trends that came about, oh say, a little over 10 years ago with the popularity of Mad Men? And if tie clips ARE still in style, what's the right way to wear one and WHEN should you wear a tie clip? I've got all the answers for you in this video, covering one of the great (and some might say essential) menswear accessories. Enjoy!

A must have, I nearly always have it when wearing a tie. I do not care if it is in fashion or not at the moment, I'm wearing it since the early 90s.
I really enjoyed this video, no one is talking about things like this. That’s why I love your channel my man!

I am fortunate to have two of my grandfather's tie clips from the 1940s, and wear them with great sentimental value.

I think tie clips are a timeless accessory to your wardrobe. It's more of a bonus than a necessity. I don't wear it all the time though, because it can make my outfit look too busy.

I think its too much when you see people in waistcoats wearing them as its not necessary if a vest or jumper is holding the tie down already you only actually need it if youre only in a shirt
Bespoke Style is the channel which introduced me to men's dressing "style" The contend is precise , absolutely what you need to know ( no words to appreciate ). Kudos to Brian.
Thanks for validating the tie bar argument. I just bought a Tiffany Atlas one in sterling for my partner who’s always well-groomed and styled. I thought it was the one accessory he was missing, especially with a well-curated tie collection. He’s 33, an Iraq combat veteran, just got his MBA and is heading into a C-suite position. Thanks for the affirmation and the excellent vid.
Awesome and informative video! Subscribed right away. You keep the perfect balance between your own opinions and knowledge and the fact that people can do whatever they feel comfortable in.
I just love your videos, they are an essential part of my lifestyle AND keep me in check.
Absolutely love your videos! Such an inspiration.
On KZread and On Instagram Reels there is nothing more I look forward to other than HeSpokeStyle videos.

Sir, thanks for the info. I have learned more about tie clips in your 4:24 video than all my years of working in menswear. Love your channel.👍🏽👍🏽
Great video! I collect old tie clips and have enjoyed wearing them.I really love your channel!
Cannot believe I’ve worn a tie clip incorrectly 🙈. Thanks so much. Loving all these videos on the channel. Definitely your channel needs more visibility than some of the other ‘more viewed’ channels.
Brian, I have been following you for years, and let me just say: I love both this video and the direction that your channel has taken recently. The incorporation of humor is PURE CLASS. So often, we make the same unavoidable mistake in our work as we do in our dressing. As you put it a while back: we try too hard. But here, you put us all at ease. The humor echoes your personal style with such sprezzatura - such expert nonchalance. You are a true gentleman, classic with a modern sensibility!

WELL SAID!
Nice one, to the point, not overall lengthy, good summary of the topic. Just ordered one. Thank you again Brian and stay safe!
As a doctor, tie clip is a must have accessory. Thanks
Thank you!! That was easy can’t wait to add this feel like this is necessary.
Great suit & tie combo you've got on there Brian ! Love it.
What I have started doing lately, is I wear a tie clip when I'm not wearing the suit blazer. This helps keep the tie in place and it lifts the overall outfit. When wearing a blazer, i find it helps keep the tie in place so i skip the clip... Keep up the great work, amazing content and i agree with Mr. J, you have found the right balance between materials and patterns.
The thing I immediately noticed in this video is the play and contrast between your shirt collar, tie and jacket fabrics. I think you struck a perfect balance with the colours, proportions and fabrics, and the result looks so comfortable and natural; something I might not typically get from a classic business look. Really goes to show how the subtle details can elevate a look, despite it being a classic.

Excellent content. I couldn't have said it better.
I've started wearing an off-white shirt with a black tie once in a while and considered a tie clip. Thanks for the insights. I also discovered that wearing a black leather belt and cognac/light brown leather shoes totally works in that context, even though my instinct is to go either/or in terms of leather and metal. A brown belt clashed too much with the white shirt and black tie, and black oxfords made it too formal.
Nice video! I love wearing a tie clip!
I really enjoyed this video! Details matter! I would also like to see your take on office/business style/outfits
Once wore tie once this year, but i still enjoy this video. I found turtleneck under the blazer/suit jacket much warmer and more comfortable than shirt and tie.
My dad always wore a tie clip and as far as I know, he still does. I always thought it looked cool.

You are right on mark with this one. I agree wholeheartedly with your observations/suggestions. I do wear tie bars but not on every occasion. However, I always put the smaller end of the tie through the labels sewn on the back to keep them from flapping around in lieu of a proper tie bar. Thanks

Awesome video ....
Having started my career in Sales selling the first computers into the Advertising, Newspaper and Book Publishing sectors between 1966 and 1972 I dressed in the Mad Men style. Not only did I have a collection of tie bars but I was extremely proud of my collection of tie tacks fitted with a range of semiprecious stones and opals. They got put away in a one of my wife's jewelry boxes in 1972, when I bought two suits from Australia's most innovative fashion designer with flares that swept the floor. Of course the hair went to the same extreme, which caused a major problem at the Singapore Airport because hair touching the shirt collar was banned in the City. Happy Days !!! Phil.
Always wanted this video. Kindly make a video on collar pin as well.
I'm not a man but i thoroughly enjoy this channel. I mean, such small details. Who says only women enjoy dressing up, I mean men who are aware of their style too have peculiarities with their clothes and accessories. You don't hear it often so let me say it. Men are awesome ❤
As a young man going to job interviews, I used a large safety pin to pin my tie onto my shirts. While it worked, it was far from perfect. As an older man, I own a couple of different tie clips to get the job done in a much better way. They're like traditional belt buckles. They never go out of style.
Well done! Great advice to blouse your tie! I think you missed one style, however. I have (2) clips that are chains instead of bars. I think my grandfather wore one, and I found one years ago. They let the tie move a little loosely, but I stopped wearing them when I noticed they seemed to fray a tie's edges after a long time.
Currently I have two tie bars from J Crew in silver and gold tones and I match them to metals of my watches and belts. With an upcoming interview, I will wear a silver one with a grey sportscoat, white dress shirt, navy tie and trousers.
Thank you. 👍
I thought I would post here on your most recent video, to increase the probability that you will see this. I have been thoroughly enjoying your tips, reviews and advice on men's fashion. Like you, I am a scent enthusiast and I just wanted to highly recommend a particular perfume by Serge Lutens that I'm fairly sure you will love. That perfume is Ambre Sultan. I tried a sample based on several reputable web reviews of it as one of the most classic modern ambers and it is now a head and shoulders standout in my scent collection. Very distinct, with a scent that tells a story. Would go well with black tie. Unisex, leaning towards masculine. Look it up.
Great video, imho a tie clip is always a good idea as it help to keep the outfit together - figuratively and literally

I used to wear a tie clip when I first got into classic menswear, but now I really never use them. They can for sure look good, and they kinda give off a more polished look 👍 hehe I guess that I just lean more towards the “casual elegant” and nonchalant kinda style, where the tie clip, in my humble opinion, does not really fit in. Great video as always Brian! 👍
I have never worn one but on you it looks good. May have to try it out. 👍🏼

Really good video as always, thank you. Quick question on club or Masonic tie clips. They usually have a small round emblem in the middle with a particular fraternity on it. I’m interested in your view as to whether this crosses into the ‘novelty’ category. Thank you

Thanks. Always quality over quantity. And I'll never just try to repurpose IG or TikTok content on KZread. That's incredibly lazy and, in my opinion, disrespectful of everyone who subscribes. You should get something specific to the channel.
Good
I gotta say, that suit looks very sharp!
I like to match the metal of my tie bar with the metal clasps on my braces. Though I tend to cut the plackets of old dress shirts down to two or three button holes, so I can put that strip through my tie keeper loop and button my tie to my shirt instead of wearing a tie bar. Four hole strips are great for keeping tuxedo shirt studs from getting lost and helping them stay secure while wearing a formal dress shirt.
Yes, each and every time, wear a nice clip.
On point as usual. For me, it's a standard accessory and I forget that sometimes people might overlook such a key item. Thank you for your video.
Thank you for this video. I have seen multiple menswear commentators say a tie clip should not be worn perpendicular to the tie because the perpendicular tie clip breaks up the vertical line of the look. I think wearing a tie clip at an angle looks disheveled. I am glad He Spoke Style recommends wearing a perpendicular tie clip.
@hespokestyle

Who are these multiple menswear commentators you speak of?
@authuser676

@@hespokestyle I have heard of wearing the tie clip at an angle is an example of sprezzatura, like Gianni Agnelli wearing his wrist watch on his shirt cuff. When I was confronted with the idea of deliberately wearing the tie clip at an angle I was appalled. In my opinion, it's a terrible idea. That's why I have such a clear memory of encountering this idea in multiple places. I think I remember at least one specific source, and I could make a reasonable guess as to the other, but I may be wrong, so I would rather not mention a name. Sorry.

I found one specific source: this is a quote from "Dressing The Man" by Alan Flusser. On p. 228 Flusser says, "Many aficianados cas their (tie clip) downward to affect a more casual air."

Would you believe I only just started watching Mad Men last month? 😂 Regardless, awesome tips! I actually was unsure on these but after trying a few on last year, I'm sold. I think the tie clips/bars work better with more toned down and business outfits and makes the wearer look a little more tidied up. Also I can't believe the amount of high quality content you've been putting out lately on top of prepping for the MTM collection launch. Always hoping for the best for you Brian! - Han

Yes I believe they are plus they're functional
Hi Bryan, quick question: what do you think of Tie Rings? For below the knot. Thanks
I've noticed in watching "Dragnet" that Jack Webb and Harry Morgan wear their tie clips lower. I wondered if that was some kind of "cop" thing involving keeping the lower part of your tie controlled when drawing a weapon or something.
I couldn’t care less wether tie clips are in fashion or not. I ❤️ them. Silver and platinum. Tiffany especially. ❤️ tie clips. For me they are a wonderful fashion accessory.
Where did you get that tie bar?
I always wear a tie clip...a Dunhill. Wear between the 3rd and 4th button...a rule. Slide types slip, grip types...well, grip.
I have a tie clip in silver and crystal
Question instead of getting two color tie clips separate can I prefer just get one that is gold and chrome two tone color?
Fashionable or stylish or not. You can’t argue the functionality!
Can you wear tie clips on chino pants?
Bought my fist ones on Monday, and I definitely love the look. What do you think about cross button suites? Also bought my first one not long ago... I think it's not on trend, but I don't really care and also love the classic look.

Thanks. It's kind of a modified Old Bertie. Extra wrap
I prefer a tie clip with anchoring to a buttonhole similar to the way many tie tacks are done. The short (1/2") chain allows slight movement and eliminates the need for constant adjustment.
For some reason when I put on a tie bar my whole tie moves to one side, doesn't go straight down. Because of the bar the tie gets moved to the border where the buttons are
bought tie clips yesterday then thought, “do I need this or nah”
I personally love tie bars. I think it adds a subtle hint of elegance to a suit. I don’t however like tie tacs. Not that I think they look bad. I just hate the idea of putting holes in my tie.
we wear those on our ties for secondary, but its optional for everyone

Since all my trousers are high rise fit, I can dip the ends of tie blades into the waistband of the trousers to keep them from getting wet or dirty from day to day element, which eliminates the practical needs of tie clips. What do you think about that in terms of how it looks?

Not a big fan of that look but it’s all about having the èlan to pull it off. Go for it. But tucking in a high-priced tie may create a crease you’ll regret when you wear it untucked.

Tie clips are a personal choice. I don't like them at all, I prefer to wear a tie pin on occasions. As I stated it is a personal choice but I did enjoy the video.
Finding God is in the details goes that old bon mot. Tie clips are always a nice touch.
As I learned working in a country club with lots of food around using a tie clip is essential
Tie knot is always hanging low .. what should I do ?
Between 3rd and 4th button. Should count visible button I see. Cuz the first one is behind the tie... 🤔
I is so comfortable to forget if the tie is straight or no, that I always wear one.
Never was a fan of tie clips until I saw the movie legend with Tom hardy
Ill just wear it to keep my tie straight for the moment. But for style ill prefer not wearing a tie clip, but my tie willkeep moving left or right
Awesome video! Your insights were really eye-opening. I've explored a similar concept on illicium london. If you're interested in diving deeper, feel free to check it out. Looking forward to more great content from you!
It’s not about style, It’s about security people and others not getting strangled...
I think one runs the risk of looking like bus driver when wearing a tie clip, and its use in work uniforms makes it most appropriate in business, in my opinion. In more leisurely events such as dinners and parties I'd prefer to not wear a tie clip. However, your tips on pulling it off definitely expands its uses. Great video!
1- Tie clips? Yes. 2- I never wear a tie 3- Yes, I am fully aware of my mistake. I know I am missing out. I love a good tie/shirt. But I can't wear them...work in progress.
I like to keep my tie in place, but I do not like tie pins or tie clips, so I have a hack. I simply thread the narrow under tie through the loop on the back of the wide front tie, then I use a very small tie clip ( or alligator clip, or office fold back clip
How many tie clips do you have?

How about the tie tick, comes in some great colors and let the tie swing free.
Real gentlemens know the deal. Tie clips are a must ! In a 12 hour shift, you wont get your tie dangling around and getting dirty while eating for example
If worn with plain colors it can look OK though a bit old-fashioned. If there are colors and patterns involved it looks outright tacky. But most men don't even wear ties anymore so the whole discussion is a bit moot.
I'd like to wear a tie clip, but I'm afraid it would leave marks on the tie.

@Seph. It does not mark even the finest quality silk. That is because the rear of the bar, on a well made tie bar has a smooth polished surface. The clip at the rear has teeth, but they are not sharply pointed. As they are expensive to buy new, I always scrounge amongst the women's jewelry display in Charity Shops. They're not easy to find, but they should not cost you more than $5 each. I hunt for cufflinks in the same area. The best starting point is in the prestigious suburbs, where Church Fete's are a good alternative to Charity Shops. Try wearing one, it's fun. Phil.
What tie knot are you wearing in this video?
