Are They Missing The Early Signs of Autism? | Sheepdog Says

A few topics for today, but one is a bit bigger for me, and it's about Ben's teacher. As the title says, Are They Missing The Early Signs of Autism? We had his parents evening review and it has lead to a bit of debate between Claire and I.
(I forgot to mention in this video, and it is another important sign - his speech is still behind his peers, much like Oliver's was at this age)
Oliver's having a mixed week, struggling with end of term, but also achieving a bit of a milestone in his maturity.
I'm excited about the Autistic Creative Festival and the takeover we're doing on social media throughout April starting tomorrow! Lots of Retweeting ahead, for you as well as me, I hope!

I agree, early signs are missed very often, especially in kids who are verbal, bright, and not causing trouble.

My boy in year 1 would get the tools in class to do what lesson was happening. They said its because I did everything for him. This was prior to diagnosis. Now we know its because he can't take auditory instructions.

Earlier in Luke’s schooling sounds like a mix of Oli and Ben, so he wouldn’t kick off (till he was about 9 or 10) he hated noise unless he was making it, he would definitely do his own thing in swimming lessons, loved 1 to 1 stuff and didn’t cope end of term kind of things, food things as well. But your right he slipped through the net because he wasn’t kicking off all the time no teachers picked up on anything, it was only when I mentioned things he did on a daily basis to a work colleague that she said maybe write all this down and ask your doctor. When I wrote it down there was so many ticks it was very obvious, eye contact or lack of it was a big tick and I didn’t even realise mainly because I hate it too I guess (fairly sure I tick most boxes too)

As someone trying to get diagnosed at 20, I'd recommend pushing the idea!

For the last 30mins before school. Say its 30mins till school then 20mins then 10mins 5 min and then right time to go. Or put shoes on last before going out as a transition task to leaving.

This is what we do essentially. He just doesn’t know how time passes really so he thinks he can make 5 minutes stretch when it’s 5 minutes full stop.

i think it may be a lot of work to do but with both you and oli having diagnoses it be worth it if showing signs worth starting the journey in to it even with it being different to oli as it is a spectrum disorder for a reason. have you tried getting ear defenders even if he just wears them for the time the footy is on. also the saying is something like when you hear hoofs you think horse not zebra. sometimes it is a zebra tho dont forget it

This is it, it’s been zebras twice haha. Will offer him defenders during the next match and see how we do.

That's wrong because playing with sticks is stimming. That's punishing him for his disability. The school equality act says to do this is wrong of the school

He can't take auditory instructions. Same as my boy. Needs written instructions. Use few words.
