Are these the WORST TRAINS in Britain?

Daniel and Dylan, along with ‪@NickBadley‬, explore two trains often cited as the worst in Britain, and draw conclusions as to which is worse. The answer may not be what you expect! Also sort of a sequel to Hugh's 165 video ( • Why I HATE the Class 165 ).

I think 376s are much worse than the 465s, they have VERY uncomfortable seats, no toilets, no air conditioners, slower acceleration, paint fading away (especially the yellow doors) and they still wear the old connex livery. Much worse than the 465s

  • @Solomon_C

Idk about slower acceleration the 376 really does get it on especially above 55mph. I'd say it starts catching up with the /9 and is already ahead of the BREL. Of course you forgot the rough ride of the 376 as well.

@@awesometrainsandbuses Indeed, I believe the acceleration is about 49 seconds to 55 on a good 465/9 vs 52 on a 376 just so you have the figures. But the rough ride on a 376 is not very pleasant.

The 465 gets a lot of flack for how old they are, and yes they are old trains, but I think they are a prime example of yes it's bad but it could always be worse. Trains like the electric networkers were revolutionary back in their day, especially the 365s. I've had conversations with multiple drivers and the 465/9 and 365s are the best of them all, they have in their words much better acceleration and less dawdling time between stations

I'd still go with Hugh's most hated train, the 165. They were brilliant in 1992 when first introduced to my local Chiltern Line, but now they are definitely showing their age and are in need of replacement. Chiltern do seem to want to replace the older stock, as this recent reply to an email I sent them confirms... "Leasing new trains can be a prolonged and complicated process, but we are actively engaging with the rolling stock market with a view to leasing newer trains, or even building new units, to deliver the capacity that we know you deserve. Since the Covid-19 pandemic we have not been self-reliant in the terms of funding and investment, meaning that enhancements to our fleet must be approved and supported by the Department for Transport. We will continue to update you on this as discussions continue."

Try a Metro Camel class 101 on a heritage line to see what things used to be like. The 465 is only bad because SE don't care about them. Look at their "metro improvements" tab, there are zero planned improvements to the 465s. No interior refresh, not even any new seats nor a deep clean. Only "we will improve 707s" aka forget the 465s Now that SE is under the DfT they're only going to get more stingy about refurbs. "We can't do that, it'll be too expensive" while retiring trains a decade before their expected lifespan (wasting money) and spending even more money ordering new trains that are always delivered late and break down all the time. It's very clear that the DfT is only focused on getting shiny new things while letting everything else rot. Very sad. They've pretty much not been refurbished (bar the 465/9) and have been left to deteriorate for the past 30 years Give them a proper refurb (2+2 layout with no ironing boards, new floors and actually cleaning the trains properly) and they'll be some of the nicest to travel on. Old trains are only bad because we stop caring about them. For a prime example at how an old train can be improved to be almost as good as the newest trains, see the Comeng trains which are 43 years old and set to run for another 5+ years, yet thanks to refurbishments over the past few decades look brand new from the inside with modern LCD screens and reupholstered seats that are better than the newer trains.

My biggest bugbear is Manchester Piccadilly Platform 13, especially when coming from Manchester Metrolink Shudehill and Market St, buying tickets and getting information, up all those flights of stairs, escalators and two travelators up, then downstairs to the platform 13 itself - going on SailRail to Dublin via Holyhead always involves a change of train on TfW, either at Crewe, Chester or Lladnuo in Wales, on tiny and busy class 175 trains, that don’t even call at Deansgate/Castlefield to better connect with the Metrolink - bigger and more direct trains are needed for SailRail services (they don’t even have to be express nor first class) as these trains are eternally busy and they should really be operating from Manchester Victoria direct to Holyhead - even Northern from Victoria to Chester and Avanti from Chester to Holyhead is a better offering - TfW seem to have forgotten that people do carry luggage on their trains on SailRail and the times allotted to change trains at Chester for Holyhead is way too tight, with the layout for changing trains at Chester needs looking at - this is made worse if a train is delayed leaving Manchester and arrives late into Chester, I’ve had to jump on to an Avanti train at Chester to avoid missing the check-in for the ferry at Holyhead - I’ve even ended up being stranded in Holyhead for 2 days during the rail strike last year in October 2022, paying an extra amount for a single from Holyhead to Manchester, as my ticket’s return portion went out of date during the strike, with a packed coach transfer between Lladnuo to Chester, stopping at every Welsh station to Chester - to say that I was frazzled arriving back in Manchester was an understatement

networkers are mega, seats may be ''broken'' but for them to actually come apart you have to actually take it apart, in other words, what you were doing, they never fall apart on their own, and the buttons for the doors are not the wrong way around, you don't just accidentally put them the wrong way around on an entire fleet of trains, and in general I cant really think of anything actually bad about them, basically all you said about them being bad was the seats coming apart if you took them apart, so that doesn't exactly make them the worst, does it? I would take a 465 over a 707 any day, and your point of them needing to be withdrawn? god no, they do not need to be withdrawn, it was bad enough all the metcams being withdrawn and replaced with the comparatively worse 707s, the day the networker dies is the day the southern electrics die, a day that I hope is nowhere near, and ideally, a day that never comes

This is true - that said, assuming a standard 38-40 year life, the 465s do not have much more economic life left (8-10 years) so a big refurbishment is not justified (the money would be better spent on a brand new fleet). So even if there was not a tender for replacement out now, by 2030 the Class 465 would be in urgent need of replacement. I would like to see Southeastern rebranded as LSE rail (London and South East - not London School of Economics) and a bit of colour added as i find the Metro colour scheme very bland which accentuates the drab look of the Class 465s

I don't mind them (though there was too much false economy cost-cutting at the time they were designed such as not having Selective Door Opening to enable them to serve stations with short platforms) but consider that they will be due for replacement by 2030 or so

Nonsense! I would agree if it was the 165; they are awful! But the 465s have character and great sound. It's just that these SE 465s are in such dreadful, unmaintained condition. That's not the train design. The 150s; well they're better than a Pacer lol! ...and better than a 165. Odd choices. I've never heard others mentioning hating these 2 units. 3+2 seating is awful. But it's not specific to these two trains - it's all over the network!

@@BobC250 I've seen that the 43 reliability figures are quite low recently. Sprinters (except the 158/159) are also not great. The 465 BREL figures are lower than the 465 Met-Cam figures hence why I said the BRELS were unreliable.

Perhaps 🤔 the class 150 trains 🚊 are the worse trains 🚂 🚆 🚊 in Great Britain 🇬🇧 because there isn’t a carpet and it’s not like 👍 the class 158 and 159 trains 🚊 which are much better. Could it happen to other trains 🚆 that they are worse is the same to class 150 trains 🚊. Class 150 trains 🚆 have an open window 🪟 on the side of the trains 🚆. Class 165s and 166s are probably the worse trains 🚆 in Great Britain 🇬🇧 , Class 465 trains 🚊 must be the same to class 150 trains 🚊. They are second generation trains 🚊. The question 🙋‍♀️ is that could these crappy 💩 trains 🚆 survive on the railways 🚃 🚆 until at perhaps 🤔 the end of December 2030 (New Year’s Eve) at the latest in 7 years time 🕰️.
