Nice, practical advice! I knew about phase but pretty much just ignored it most of the time unless something didn't sound right to my ears. But just that little bit extra (for example checking snare phase or Slate phasing) can take it from good to great! Great tips!

Sometimes you can get used to the out of phase sound and once you hear it in phase you’re like “ohh, that’s how it’s suppose to sound” 🤣

Your channel is definitely my go to right now for mixing. Love the videos for fixing common mistakes. Great work!

(For the drums) The in phase but not phase aligned sounds more like a (really well) recorded live performance in say a band room (and imparts this onto the whole track). The in phase and phase aligned one sounds more like what I would associate with a controlled studio environment with separately recorded sessions (as the room verbs are not perfectly aligned, but the instruments are). Very cool, and very interesting, I've never really compared both ways of doing it like that, just goes to show what a tiny bit of experimentation can do! You really get a perfect sense of the room and where every thing is placed with the mics left in position timewise. Aligning them all really gives a tighter sounding space with everything really punchy and focused. Both sound great in their own way!

Eventhough I know all this stuff it’s always cool to watch your videos! But, your versions of these videos are so much better than others hahah. Great work man! By the way: Are you gonna go into some Dolby Atmos mixing at some point? Would be awesome.

Thanks man! Always good to remind ourselves of the simpler, yet very important things! I haven’t dived into atmos yet, mostly because I’m still on Catalina and can’t update logic to the newest version without updating my OS haha I’ll sort that out pretty soon and then I’m going to take a look into atmos a little further

@@spinlightstudios Hahaha, my boss is the same with the updating OS and stuff. I’ve always updated everything everytime and I’ve never had an issue.

I copied and paste the same guitar, hard panned left and right. On the right I used a 10ms delay and used the gain plugin and turned on the phase. It got rid of the mono and sounds nice and wide. I take it it’s okay if sounds okay, right?

It’s hard to say without hearing it, but you have to work with what you’ve got sometimes. If it sounds good, then it sounds good!

What if you are sent multi-tracks for mixing, and don't have access to guitarist for duplicating tracks? How would you multi-track with what you have, without running into these Haas effect and other issues?

If the song has repeating sections/patterns, you could cut and paste a new guitar track together - for example, in the first chorus, use the guitar from chorus 2 as the double track, and then opposite for the next chorus. If that makes sense. There’s no shortcuts to substitute for doing it right

Great videos. Thanks. I notice your set up looks like it it right up against a wall. If so isn’t that kind of a no no for listening position setup. And, how do you adjust for any anomalies caused by it?

I hear what you’re saying, but I have always had to work in rooms where I can’t put my speakers meters from the wall. I have treatment in the room. Bass traps floor to ceiling. Panels on the wall behind the computer/monitors and on the back wall. It all helps. But just listening to music. In your environment helps you the most, referencing and learning what your space sounds like is still the best thing you can ever do. You have to work with what you’ve got! Also I’ve heard very mixed opinions regarding monitoring correction software, i Honestly think just some treatment and learn your room is the best thing you can do.

Thanks for you’re reply. I have to agree. I need room behind my desk to work on wiring, i measured what is supposedly the right distance from the wall according the the length of the room. I also have bass traps floor to ceiling and treatments on the wall. Lately I’ve been mixing on headphones with much better results after much experimenting and referencing. Thanks again, I learn alot from you.

Flipping polarity and time adjusting phase gets confusing and they are doing different things. Polarity is just the peaks and valleys of a waveform. Phase is where in time the waveforms are in relation to each other on the timeline. In your example, you flipped the polarity of the OH's and it sounded better. After I pull all the drums up, I check flipping the polarity of the OH's, kick and snare. Sometimes doing that on any one of those tracks can give you a slightly fuller kick sound. It can be a tradeoff with the snare... you might lose some of the beefiness of the snare, but if it's negligible and the kick sounds better, you can usually gain back anything you lost with the snare, once you start EQ'ing and adding parallel processing.

I believe so, but mostly using a strat on one side and Gibson on the other, with the double track of each a little lower

do you quantize your drums first then adjust for phase?

I’ll typically have a few plugins inverting phase like I showed in this video and Then I would quantize them, just make sure they are in a phase locked group so when you edit one channel it affects them all. Usually I commit the audio after quantizing and Then I might move into phase aligning the audio files by zooming in and lining them up (like I did at the end of the drum segment)
