Are there Fortune Cookies in China? Chinese Restaurant Prank #2: Speaking Fluent Chinese

After proving in the last video that most of the time you need to set Chinese people up with a prank to get a reaction, we return to the "Speaking Chinese Prank" series. Today, I'm going to get some Chinese food at a restaurant for lunch. I start by speaking Japanese as we all do here in Japan and suddenly switch to speaking fluent Chinese. The reaction was beautiful. I'm also on a mission to get a fortune cookie today from one of these restaurants. Sounds easy to order food, but not so fast.

Fortune cookies were invented in Japan and called “tsujiura senbei” 辻占煎餅. They were served with tea. A Japanese immigrant in San Francisco started baking them and it made its way into Chinese restaurants during WW2, when the Japanese were ostracized and sent to prison camps. The bakery that made them was called Benkyodo and the man who made them first in the US was Makoto Hagiwara. You can still find them in Kyoto and Kanazawa.

I have also heard that it came from Japan. It makes sense because of the omikuji fortune slips they give at temples.

Oriental Pearl That’s exactly the origin! The tea cookies (larger than modern fortune cookies) had the wish slips sticking on the side.

This probably explains why the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco has fortune cookies. Something I always wondered about.

You asked for more videos and that’s the only reason this is up here today. I’m learning a lot about KZread. Sorry to say I had to delete many of the earlier videos because of copyright claims. This channel was made for my family in Michigan and I never imagined it would take off. I’m learning more about computer security, because MY PC WAS HACKED into two days ago in an attempt to steal unpublished videos. I’ve been getting bombarded by scammers trying to get my email address, which they could use to hijack the channel. They failed, I bought a new computer, and nobody is going to stop us from making this channel grow! -Anming

Hopefully you get it all sorted, because your channel is starting to grow and I’d hate to see you lose momentum. What type of copyright claims were being made against your videos? Can you appeal those claims to KZread? All that hard work..... 😠

KerbyFab It’s ok, those videos were not high quality. I want to redo them. KZread never contacted me. I took it down. Yes, the hacking thing sucked. They broke in through the google chrome browser and started downloading GoPro videos. Channel hacking has been HUGE on KZread in the last few months. And most people never get their channel back again. I got some serious security software on all my devices now.

Now I don’t really study Chinese anymore, but I just maintain and use it. I started with Japanese language school in 2015 and still continue to study it today. So, in total: 8 years of knowing Chinese and almost 5 years of knowing Japanese. Knowing and studying are a little different. Like I said I don’t actively study Chinese anymore.
