Are Power Tool Battery Packs Fixable? Let's Find Out!

Ғылым және технология

In this video I'm working on fixing something I haven't fixed before - 2 broken power tool battery packs. Since sometimes the battery is the post expensive part of a power tool it would be great if they were fixable. One is a DeWALT 20V Max Lithium Ion 5 AH battery and the other is Milwaukie 18V 2AH battery pack.

I know a lot has already been said at this point so I'd like to simply say thank you. I look forward to you and your teams videos and am excited to see new content. I'm getting older and there aren't a lot of channels out there anymore I look forward to seeing new uploads. You've scratched that niche interest for me and kept me entertained for years. Hearing you talk about what you're going through in the same casual tone as all your other videos broke my heart a little. I also recognize that you're processing this in the best way for you, while trying to keep your community informed and entertained. I respect that a lot. Again, thank you.

Hi Steve, I work at Batteries Plus. I've done a lot of repairs on drill batteries and rebuilt them as well. For your DeWalt battery, the minimum voltage for the charger to recognize it needs to be charged would be 16 volts to about 15.5. This is because it has multiple different batteries in it and those batteries are 18650s. Each one of those batteries have a 3.7 volt charge. 18650s minimum voltage required to charge would be around 2.5 volts. Multiplying that by how many batteries it has gives you the minimum requirement for the charger to recognize it needs to be charged

@@UpintheAir1395 Hey man! My store doesn't work on the lithium packs due to the possibility of there being damaged lithium and shorting out the electronic causing the batteries to overload. I am just familiar with the packs because I use 18650s for other purposes.

I'm shocked that an electronics guy gave up on fixing a battery, or heck, even put it back on the charger, without checking the voltages of the individual cells. Milwaukee in particular might just flip a switch in software and say "never try to charge this again" after a couple failures. 14.5V means nothing if that's 3.6v per cells on 4 cells, and one cell at zero. Or... just try to charge up the weak cells manually and see if they take some energy. It's so simple and he didn't even check!

I have fixed over a dozen old batteries some with water damage etc. only see one bad board surprisingly. Red green one was definitely like Jesse said low voltage. I usually balance charge the cells first to at least 3.5 volts so they all match. If one cell is very weak I usually replace it which is a pain. That spot welder you have doesn’t seem very strong. Mine was cheap under $40 and will melt those nickel strips like butter if I don’t watch the level. I usually test before use so I don’t melt something I need lol.

You got this steve and keep that positive outlook that you always show on the channel. Me , my mother and my uncle all have life changing disabilities. I have learned how to repair my Nintendo switch joy cons by watching your channel and many other electronic devices and things you have repaired.

Best of luck to you Steve, sending you huge prayers. I myself am battling ovarian cancer. I've been through chemo, surgery, targeted therapy and just started immunotherapy last weel. I'm still feeeling great and not suffering any sesrious side effects except for peripheral neurophy in my feet. I also have a port. I doubt most people would be able to spot it. Take care of yourself and get as much exercise as you feeel capable of. It makes a huge difference as well as keeping a positive attitude. Bless you.

Not sure what you believe in, but God bless you man. I went thru pretty gnarly chemo session in 2017. Keep your spirits high and taco bell will be your friend. Spicy helped me get thru it. I had 8 session all a weeklong with hospital stay each time. I know you don't know us here but will help out with any information to help you get thru it. Love the content and you have helped me not be scared to jump in and fix boards and components. Thanks again and good luck with it all.

I’m a huge fan of the channel. I am making this comment as I watch so I’m not sure if you’ll figure this out this video. The cells should each be about 3-3.9 volts. Typically if a cell goes bad the battery won’t charge anymore. The individual cell can be replaced but they usually need to be balanced with each cell as close to the same voltage as possible. That circuit board has a battery management system (BMS) that balances each cell during charging. So if a cell is bad (low voltage) the charger will not charge it and they usually recommend taking it somewhere to be recycled.

Oh no! We're praying for you Steve! I have nothing but massive respect for you and your work. I hope your treatment goes well and that you'll come back stronger than ever! Focus on yourself and your health. I think I speak for everyone when I say it's more than ok for you to reduce your upload frequency if not to stop uploading at all. Thank you for teaching thousands of us with your videos and for always being genuine and transparent with your content. You've been a massive inspiration for me and I'm sure that you've also been an inspiration for others as well! Stay strong! 🙏
