Then I awoke. 22 I also saw in my dream seven ears growing on one stalk, full and good. 23 Seven ears, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprouted after them, 24 and the thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. And I told it the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me."( Pharaoh said.) 25 Then Joseph😊❤ said to Pharaoh, " The dream of Pharaoh are one; God( 😊100%❤) has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dream are one. 27 The seven lean and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty ears blighted by the east wind are also seven years of femine. 28 It is as I told Pharaoh; God (😊100%❤)has shown to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 29 There will come seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land, 31 and the plenty will be unknown in the land by reason of the famine that will follow, for it will be very severe. 32 And the doubling of Pharaoh's dream means that the thing is fixed by God(😊100%❤), and God( 😊100%❤) will shortly bring it about. 33 Now therefore let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh proceed to appoint overseers over the land and take one- fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven plentiful years. 35 And let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. 36 That food shall be a reserve for the land against the seven years of famine that are to occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land may not perish through the famine." A few thoughts: it seems a better way to phrase it would be "Train up a child according to his way, Even when he is old he will not depart from it." It seems to be saying that a lack of discipline will foster and reinforce sinful behavior in a child that they will not depart from, not necessarily that raising them in a certain way will guarantee their salvation. That said, Titus 1:6 seems to speak quite clearly on the matter "namely, if any man [referring to church elders] is beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, who are not accused of dissipation, or rebellious." It certainly seems like it's saying that one of the prerequisite qualifications of an elder is that they have believing children. Every one of the traits listed in Titus 1:5-9 are character traits that emphasize the faithfulness of a man, I feel it is safe to assume that includes the mandate about believing children. Does this necessitate that the faithfulness of a parent 100% guarantees theor child's salvation? I don't know, but it seems like it has more to do with it than not.

Based on your logic, are elder responsible for the salvation of their children? If they are responsible, then would not other Christian parents also hold the responsibility for their children's salvation?

  • @limpingllama57

@@redddave Yes, it would seem that elders are responsible for raising their children sufficiently so as to bring about the salvation of their children, given that it is a prerequisite for church eldership. By extension, all Christian men, as heads of their household, are likewise responsible in such manner, even if they never pursue church eldership.

Titus 1:6 seems to be about children who are minors. The point is apparently that an elder should be able to control what goes on in his own house. But adult children would probably not be living with their parents anyway. Also relevant for this issue is Matt 10:35-36, where Jesus teaches: 'For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.' (CSB) Similar is Luke 12:51-53: 'Do you think that I came here to bring peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three. They will be divided, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.' (CSB) These passages surely rule out the idea that good parenting can guarantee the salvation of adult children.

The idea that a lack of discipline will cause a child to go down the wrong path is ridiculous. Sure there is a way to raise a kid, but forcing religion, rules, and limiting their experiences to what you allow will force someone to rebel.

Very helpful teaching. It is a big mistake to take Proverbs too literally, as John Piper notes. Proverbs 22:6 is saying that good parenting is a worthwhile thing that is likely to lead to the benefit of the child in the future, but this is hardly the whole picture.

Taking into account that the Bible cannot contradict itself, this verse CANNOT be taken as a guarantee that being an obedient, godly parent will ensure godly children. Children are born with a sin nature that only God can remove by the new birth when the Gospel is heard and God doesn't guarantee any parent or Christian with any family members that he will do that. Parenting is fundamentally not about ensuring results but intentionally commiting to serving in the ministry that God has given you over your children to evangelize them and love them as your in-house mission field while trusting God to use your efforts and also go far beyond them to accomplish whatever he wills in their lives just as he does in yours regardless of how you were parented. Rather than obsessing over what you cannot control or how he uses his sovereignty toward your child, seek him humbly and relentlessly to save your child while exercising the means he has given you as teacher, disciplinarian, provider, protector, and primary example. If you do this then your child will not depart, as in never forget your efforts because it will have been engrained in them and whether they actively stray or not the parent has done their part and the child cannot use the excuse that their parent didn't instruct them and lead them to the Lord. It works the same way with apostasy. When it says that people left the faith it doesn't mean that they had faith to begin with but that they had enough exposure to be accountable for the truth that they rejected. The truth is still with them as they reject it, so in a sense they can't escape it, but this takes away all excuse for their rebellion. So the verse should be interpreted something like this: "Parent your child in the Lord's ways so intentionally and consistently that what you taught and displayed is engrained. This way, even if your child rejects the Lord with conscious memories of your efforts, they won't be able to bring your negligence up as an excuse from condemnation and you will be rewarded for your faith and commitment to the Lord." Trust God for the ends of your child's salvation while doing your part in some of the means he has commanded, and know that whatever God decides, his ways are perfect and his love endures forever and can remove all fear and sorrow.

Very consistent. Yeah, God Alone is sovereign in salvation, and I agree, that verse of Prov 22:6 taken in its proper context and in accordance with other parts of the Scriptures, doesn't guarantee salvation of their children to godly and faithful parents. May the LORD Who is Always Faithful remembers godly parents, faithfully raising their children in the fear of the Lord, and grant them wisdom and grace to be faithful in their calling as parents till they breath their last. I agree with you that Prov 22:6 isn't guaranteeing that good parenting will lead to devout children. Other Bible passages make that clear. However, I don't think you are right in your interpretation of 'he will not depart'. You are taking this as a cast iron promise that there is a sense in which every child who is raised well by God-fearing parents will not depart from what they received. I would suggest rather that Prov 22:6 is not designed to be a cast iron promise of any kind. Rather, it is a generalising principle that was never intended to give the whole picture on this issue. This verse teaches that as a rule good parenting will lead to lifelong godliness in children. But it is going too far to say that there will be no exceptions to this principle.

At the age of accountability everyone is responsible for their own moral choices. God holds them accountable for their abuse towards you as He would hold you accountable for you rejecting Him because of their abuse unfortunately. Though their abuse could be a good motivation for you to be angry at God ultimately it's no excuse for you to reject Him as He wasn't the abuser, Jesus said blessed is the one who doesn't take offense in me. Further to my initial comment- I believe - after listening to Paster John for a second time that I have uncovered a potential answer to the question. @13-20 P. J. Says quote: “God saves children out of failed and unbelieving parenting God is sovereign it isn’t us finally who saves our kids, God saves kids. There would hardly be any kids in the world if He didn’t save kids out of failed families”. Therefore, my conclusion is that God removes the child (by His Grace) from the abusive parent; and their punishment is to lose the love and respect of the most precious thing they had (The child). The child is freed from their abuser into safety and the loving arms of God The Father. Of course, in all instances the child does not always reach the loving arms of God the father “immediately” sometimes they may have further trials to endure- but they will have been “delivered from” and “escaped from” the abusive parent. 🙏

There are things Christianity cannot answer and for this reason people seek other sources of information for truth. We cant prove outside of faith that jesus is the only God. This alone will sway a lot of people. If god made himself more obvious to the world i think more people would believe.

I thought we were supposed to take the Bible literally? Saying there is a caveat to the Proverbs 22 promise would contradict other teachings....not good

We have to rightly divide the bible: for example; "you are the salt of the earth." we're not actually salt, the verse is talking about our character -- in the next verse it says “You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13-16) then in John 8:12 Jesus says “I am the light of the world." We're not Jesus, or a literal light -- therefore to take the bible literally at all times and even metaphorically/hyperbole would create contradictions, its not one or the other but a mixture that we have to rightly divide, in its context. Proverbs 18:21 is another example: "Death and Life are in the power of the tongue" following Deuteronomy 32:39 See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand. :) I hope that could have helped, God Bless.

Proverbs are not promises which guarantee an absolute result. They are not "if, then" statements. They are general principles. The entire book of Ecclesiastes is actually the author bemoaning those exceptions to the principles: wicked men that seem to succeed and righteous men that suffer. To take all verses in the Bible "literally" without being familiar with the type of literature, target audience, context, etc, is actually error. Rather than reading it "literally," you would be reading it "literalistically" (having the appearance of being literal in a very simplistic way, but in error). (kind of like the difference between being lawful and being legalistic). You will miss the forest for the trees and stray into error. The Bible, in some places, accurately records individuals blatant lies. Does that mean that we are to ignore the literary form of historical narrative and believe the lie? Do we also start saying that "The Bible teaches lies"? May it never be!
