Are Laptop Coolers Worth It? The Ultimate Laptop Cooling Pad Guide 2024! (20 Coolers Tested)

Ғылым және технология

Are laptop coolers worth it? Well I set out to find out if in fact the added cost of anywhere from $12-$110 ever makes sense for adding a laptop cooling pad to your setup. To do this I took 20 of amazons best selling laptop cooling pads and pinned them head to head to see what laptop cooling solutions actually were worth the added cost, by testing them across three different tiered laptops. An older Asus Gl552, set to represent lower power draw systems and older side ventilation laptops, a new HP Victus 15, which represents newer midrange laptops and finally Asus's Strix G16, which is representing the high end of the laptop market. After testing all of the coolers on each laptop, we found that by far the best options out there come from the Llano Laptop Cooling Pad, and the IETS GT500V2. We hope you enjoyed this video and if you would like us to test more laptop coolers let us know in the comments below.

    Great review! A couple things worth adding: In Canada, the Llano cooler is only ~$89 USD, whereas the GT500v2 is ~$135 USD making Llano the clear choice for Canadians. Also, the 16” Lenovo Legion laptops purportedly do much better with the Llano than they do with the GT500. When it comes to noise, I didn’t see if you mentioned what setting you had the cooling pads configured to - but it might be a good idea to test them all at their quietest setting. Even though the Llano can be quite loud at max, its min setting is relatively quiet and yields a whopping 18°C of cooling on a Lenovo Legion Slim 7.

    i consider Llano and IETS new coolers with the foam to seal any leaks and push the air only through the laptop as a break through in laptop cooling technology those things are are miles ahead of anything we had before, it looks so simple you dont even need 3+ fans or anything yet it works much better and there is a dust filter you never need to clean the laptop again only change paste

    Great review. What I would love to see is some of these budget coolers tested WITH a foam gasket to seal the base to the laptop. I am genuinely curious how much of a difference is within the fans vs the gasket seals itself on these higher end coolers. An $11 cooler with $5 worth of foam gasket may? potentially perform even better ?

    Thanks for your comprehensive review of practically all of the current cooling solutions available for laptops. For a future test, can you lower the noise level of all coolers to a specific level which they can all achieve (say 39 dB) and run your benchmarks. Do the more powerful (and more expensive) coolers still perform better or does the cooling performance narrow between units? Also it appears that the units with the foam seals perform better. Is it possible to take these foam pads off and place them on the other units to determine if the cheaper coolers perform better with a seal? Perhaps the most economical solution is a little DIY project where you buy a cheap cooler but find/buy some foam rubber and with a bit of double sided tape create a custom foam seal for your laptop. Something to consider for a future episode. Looking forward to more reviews!

    Yes! The two big questions I also was pondering while watching this Matt's thorough review! I'm a DIYer, so I may see what I can do to get the 'flow rate' of various lower-priced pads, and mate the best one (or just pick the one that seemed to do the best overall IMHO) with a homemade foam seal, and see if there is an improvement. It's possible though that USB-powered fans won't hold up as well over the long haul in a 'forced flow' role, but it would be fun to test, and potentially rewarding.

  • @candive3099

    @candive3099

    5 ай бұрын

    @@fletcher969 you made a valid point that the USB-powered fans may not hold up well if there is a complete seal. Also some of these fans have a mesh surface which may not allow a complete seal but this simple customization may improve the cooling performance of the cheaper units.

    they only perform better at full blast the ones with foam, i have the iets and im sending it back....its over 70db and that is hear piercing, yeah you can hear it with headphones! When you go to the bathroom or something and take your headphones off its so damn loud, if you live with other people they will not like this...yeah you can turn it down but then you don't get the cooling performance you are paying for. imo the cheaper ones are better and quiet and you done have to plug the pad into the wall!.

  • @JH-vb1wo

    I did some studying and the cheap ones are not going to do much and I feel like if your home doesn’t have really good air conditioning you need a good cooling pad with a real good fan so I’m gonna get the ets600 one it’s a really large fan and louder then normal but to me it’s well worth having that extra power to push out that heat

    Thanks for the effort! I'm from Singapore and decided to get Llano as it was cheaper than all the IETS coolers. I bought my Llano V13 for ~71 USD. While the IETS500v2 was 89USD, IETS600 was ~100USD, and IETS626 was ~132USD Also to add, I had a bad experience with ICE COOREL K9. Their ports are pretty lousy and both of them broke after only a month. The RGB always turns on so I have to turn it off every time. @deathshade777Ай бұрын

    What you need to mention is that the cheaper coolers do NOT block dust. They are essentially pulling air and dust and shooting it into your laptop. This is very bad for the long term. Another thing to mention is how the fans in almost all laptops work. The air being pushed into the laptop has potential to be pushed it at the wrong angle actually damaging your laptops internal fans.

  • @GordonSeal

    But the same happens without an external fan, the laptop coolers suck in the dust from underneath / the surrounding. And if you make sure your table is clean, the difference won't really be that bug.

    The dust filtering is a major concern for people in high dust areas, keeping a clean table is not very effective unless the system is being used in a completely sealed room with air filtration. @@eugenewinestein1384 I tested it yesterday and it works. Kinda. Going from my old Klim cooler to this yielded about 4c lower temp on the CPU (do note it kept faster clocks) and Cinebench R23 was about 1k faster (26.4k to 27.4k). At both 1000 speed and 2800 speed the temp was about 13c lower than Klim. It was also cooling the GPU quite well in games. It went from about 80c to 70c (lowest speed). The problem is my MSI Titan is too big. Repositioning the laptop yielded about 4-5c better temps but I had to lower the clams and then let the laptop sit futher down, meaning it was covering all the buttons. Another thing is that even at its lowest speed (300) the thing is too loud to have on when you're not doing anything. It's not annoying but sounds like my laptop when I'm doing light gaming and the fans turn on. At 1000 speed it's not tolerable in my opinion (without headphones, will be ok with good headphones and gaming) and at 2800 speed it sounds like having a vacuum cleaner next to you. But I won't deny that it's actually cooling, and doing a good job at it so I will keep it. Even at lower speed the temp difference is noticable. Not sure if it's worth €140, but the thing feels like good quality and registering it you get 30 months warranty. Not bad for electronics coming from China.

    @winestein1384 I'm not sure why my reply disappeared (too much text?) but Llano works. It cools well but is audible even at lowest speed so I'd rather turn it off when doing light work. At 1000 speed you should use headphones and 2800 it sounds like a vacuum cleaner (but no noticable temp difference). MSI Titan is too big though. It works but if you fold down the clamps and move the laptop further down you can knock off some 4-5c degrees but then you cover the buttons on the cooler. But it's not a dealbreaker, the thing cools well even with hard to fit Titan. At lowest speed (300) it cooled the CPU some 6 degrees. The GPU in games was much cooler, some 10c. At 1000 speed the CPU was 13c cooler. Not bad Not sure if worth the money I paid (€130) but I'm keeping it. The temps were compared to some basic Klim cooler.

    If you mean the cooling pads, then that’s like you’re asking what’s better if air conditioners push air to cool a room or suck it out of the room. If you mean the laptops, then I’m sure that for cooling pads to actually work properly you have to have a laptop with bottom intakes so that the laptop can intake all that cool air and expel out outside through the side and back exhausts/vents.

  • @AutodidactEngineer
    @AutodidactEngineer6 ай бұрын

    A custom made cooler is a lot better than any of these since for the cooling to work the pad needs to have a rubber/foam seal between the laptop and pad forming an airtight seal! Also the only fans designed/capable of push air through a laptop's dense internals are blower fans! Avoid (axial fan) laptop cooling pads because they don't work.

    For the average consumer, something that filters the air would massively be worth it as a laptop can be useless in less than a year in a dusty area. Cleaning the dust out basically restores it to like-new performance, but most normies would just consider a dust-jammed laptop a broken laptop. Having a prefilter could essentially give that type of consumer several extra years of usage.

    When 90% of them were absolute garbage for 15-40 dollars they better have changed lol. They name them gaming coolers when they cant even cool normal laptops most of the time. At least the expensive ones actually do something for the big price jump. I got the GT500 after one of my fans died and it does amazing with a vbios swap / overclock.

    Well I would argue it depends on the system you are trying to cool if the other coolers happen to make sense. For example if you are cooling something in the mid range with decent bottom intake even the $12 liens would be adequate and worth it for that system. With that said the IETS is definitely the best out there but not everyone needs it depending on their configuration.

  • @BalkanBiker

    The best thing about those regular cooling stands is that they raise your laptop. Their effectiveness is trash as well as them being connected to your pc, which makes them unable to deliver the performace needed. These have their own power delivery and a much better fan. There's no comparison.
