Are lab-grown diamonds the future?

Scientists now have the technology to make synthetic diamonds in a laboratory. They are far cheaper than mined stones, but can they replace the real thing?
Click here to subscribe to The Economist on KZread: econ.st/2xvTKdy
It's the biggest disrupter the diamond industry has faced. Machines are now growing diamonds in a matter of weeks for two-thirds of the price - but can they replace the magic of a mined stone? Could they cause the $82 billion diamond jewelry industry to lose its sparkle?
Sophisticated ads have been making the case for diamonds for decades. De Beers, the world's biggest rough diamond producer by value, linked diamonds with romance in the late 1940s and dreamt up the idea of a diamond engagement ring as an essential display of love. So-called queen of diamonds Alisa Moussaieff sells gems to the rich and the Royal the world over, and has done for over half a century. For her there's more to a diamond than its chemical structure.
While sales of lab-grown diamonds are about 2% of the industry, the market is growing by over 15% a year. They've actually been around for more than 60 years but recently the process and the product have been refined. California-based Diamond Foundry can create a 1 carat diamond in two weeks.
Though the difference can be detected using specialized equipment in a lab, the US Federal Trade Commission in July 2018, expanded its definition of a diamond to include lab-grown stones - but Mrs. Moussaieff doesn't feel threatened.
Now buyers can pick up a lab-grown diamond for 1/3 less than a mined stone, and as technology improves, prices will drop further. Big mined stones are valuable because they are rare but diamond mining has been linked to conflict, human rights abuses, and state corruption. Lab-grown diamonds provide an ethically sourced alternative. But until top designers decide to work with lab-grown stones their potential will be limited within the luxury market.
Lab-grown diamonds need the glamour and romance associated with mined diamonds if they're going to survive. It's a direction the diamond market is already heading. As of January 2019, Tiffany and Co, the biggest jeweler in the world by sales, will disclose the origin of all of its diamonds. It could force a new wave of transparency across the jewelry world - but for the makers of lab-grown diamonds, the jewelry world is only the beginning.

Very true. If I ever buy my wife any diamond jewellery in the future, I will only consider pieces made with synthetic stones. There is absolutely no way to distinguish them from natural stones just by looking at them, and no one really cares as long as they sparkle nicely.

@@JP-zp5ic Hi, buy a mossanite. I have one that is so beautiful....I absolute LOVE IT. It looks like a real diamond and is friendly to the environment. Research moissanite. Buy something under a 1.5 carat (they are weighed different though-not by carat) and you'll find something lovely. mine is a G colour. Im thrilled with it. I had mine set but the jeweller didn't do a good job. SO im looking to get it redone by a reputable jeweller. But the stone is lovely and it was under $600. It sparkles like mad under the right lights (diamonds behave the same way) ....However mossanite, like diamonds can be moddy, depending on light. if not in good light my moissanite goes flat, but so do diamonds under bad light, both rocks look like glass.

It works as long as the stone is the size of a football. Those little rocks that we normal people can afford to buy, you can't begin to make your money back from their purchase. Unless you can afford a truly great Earth grown stone and chances are you don't waste time on KZread if you can, you will never see half your money back. Buy a lab grown stone that is 1/3 larger. And the guy who swears he can tell by looking at them which are lab grown. That's a skill the industry could use since it takes a team of experts and a zillion Dollars in equipment to tell the difference. Lab grown stones are REAL diamonds. Just without the blood.

There are diamonds that are mined which support local communities in countries with a developing economy. There are humane natural diamonds. Natural diamonds are NOT only conflict. Synthetic diamonds are an attack to the communities that rely on diamond mining. The advertisements are very misleading, so the individuals (and corporations)who own diamond factories can financially benefit. Even De Beers is making lab created diamonds since 2018. The reason? The sales of lab created diamonds has developed such a huge market that those who sell earth mined diamonds at the higher cost are finding their customer base being eroded by those who sell lab created diamonds at a very major savings over earth mined. As a result De Beers, as a company with enough assets to allow them to undercut the prices on companies who sell lab grown diamonds, floods the market at cut rate prices in an attempt to get the price of lab grown diamonds down so low that those companies who sell the lab grown will not make a profit and will have to go out of business. It's called getting rid of competition. I don't think it's going to work because even though the price of lab grown diamonds has fallen there are more people than ever who are buying them and more companies than ever who are going into the business of selling them.

I have a lab created diamond in my ring and I promise that you can't tell the difference between it and my friend's that has a natural stone. I requested diamond because I believe that it's beautiful and my alternate choice of emerald was too expensive. I also asked my partner to look at lab created for peace of mind that the ring was as conflict free as possible. The stone cost him $650 as opposed to the "real thing" that was nearly $2000. That's just for a 1/3 carat. Imagine the cost of anything larger with the same pedigree (colour, cut, etc.). Most couples I know are opting for these alternatives, someone I know has a white sapphire setting that's just as beautiful and didn't dig deep into the money they've been saving for a house. The consumer market is changing and the industry needs to adjust to the values of the new generation or die trying. The death of the diamond industry is the only death I'd want on my hands.
