I think the worst thing that HGSS didn't change in the remakes was not changing the wild pokemon level curve, while making the gym leaders stronger. It sucks if you're struggling against Clair and your only answer is to grind against level 23 Geodude. EDIT: You should play Dragon Quest V EDIT: Why aren't you playing Dragon Quest V

as someone who very recently tried to play HGSS due to everyone saying its like crazy good i burnt out pretty quickly once i realised there were like no options to grind to get to jasmine's level. since i went in blind i mightve missed something but the only trainers i could find were the rocket base trainers but uhhh you know theyre like level 18 and i was approaching 40s. i tried using rare candies but it just kind of made me lose steam faster since i dont enjoy cheating lol

@@SERMareep2007 Yeah, Gen 2 doesn't have too many strong mons to choose from. For some reason, Gen 2 introduced a lot of mediocre Pokémon statwise. Some of them were also very rare for no reason (Dunsparce, Qwilfish, and Yanma).

Can’t forget the auto run button. HGSS were designed so that you could still play the game without pressing the A/B/Y/X buttons, and I think that’s neat. Plus I think it has the best sprites and some of the best music in the franchise.

HG was very exciting especially when it was literally my first ever Pokémon game. When I first played it, since HG was my first Pokémon game, I actually thought Kanto was a part of Johto but didn’t kno it was actually a separate region until later on

Gen 5 exists. I like Gen 2 but the level scaling is way off and the trio is way unbalanced. It’s got a long post game but so does Gen 5. I also just like all the quality of life changes in BW2.

@@eclipses3131 I can't rly say anything about gen 5, as I haven't played black or white, but I can talk ab gen 2. The gen 2 starters aren't that unbalanced Imo, I'd say they're all pretty versatile if u use them right. And I mean, the level scaling hasn't rly been a problem for me, I was able to get through the games without having to grind levels too much, it was mainly just good usage of items and movesets, but if you're not fond of that, that doesn't really concern me, I'm just saying it's beatable without having to grind too much. If you use an emulator, you can even speed up the grinding process if you are grinding. And even if gen 5 also has long post game, I just really like how gen 2 does it, with how you can actually see how certain gym leaders have changed, and don't get me started on the battle with red, it's such a nice addition to the in game story. Anyways, with all this said, I think gen 2 is deserving of at least being having some of the best games in the franchise, if not the best. Not that that's going to be easy, since I currently have emerald on the same level as heartgold and soulsilver, emerald was practically perfect.

I’ve been playing Pokémon crystal recently and it surprises me how much I really like the jhoto games, especially how the story is set out and feels like an actual journey across the world, given how you travel to another region and challenge an actual Pokémon master in the protagonist of the last game,both old and remakes work amazingly as a sequel to the kanto games

I'm a huge Gen 2 fanboy. And I definitely agree. Alpha Sapphire definitely was a good remake too. I freaked out when I could just zoom over Hoenn on Latios ❤️

As someone whose first owned game was silver version, and then got emerald at first opportunity, I have a really hard time deciding between the two remakes, for one reason in particular. The Delta Episode. God I loved that, Zinnia is probably my favorite Pokemon character, and we get to catch Deoxys, not as an event, but just part of the game. HeartGold (the one I played) just didn't quite manage to match that for me, though it did have more content to make up for it.

I also love that they are the only DS pokemon games to really take advantage of the touch screen. Your left hand controls movement and you can use the touch screen for everything else

Honestly these are my favorite titles in the series. Yeah it’s five gens behind us now but in still love them and have great memories of playing the crap out of them. Surprised the guy didn’t mention the Pokewalker.

The order is clearly: 1. HGSS Very close 2. ORAS Slightly further but still respectable 3. FRLG 4. BDSP (Edit: by popular demand, I will rank LGPE, check comments for rating.)

The catching mechanic is obviously pretty subjective, and being more based on Pokemon Go, it probably isn’t meant for most mainstream Pokémon fans. But despite its relatively small scope, there was a lot of care put into the game, and it seemed to actually do something. BDSP were nothing more than a ripoff of the originals, with an arguably worse artstyle, and worse multiplayer mechanics.

I had the original silver when it first came out, it was so different to blue its always beem my favourite even though gen 2 gets a bad rep, possibly the best remake of any game

​@@bluefox481is that due to the game being hard or you and the game being better as prior to gen 4 if a move used the attack or sp attack stat was based off of its type an example is giga impact and hyper beam both being physical in gen 3 so if your better attacking stat was sp attack then these moves would be worst to use or how dark tpe move like bite are special just because they are dark type moves and then you being better at games having a better understanding of what pokemon and moves to use and when against specific types

I will say that ORAS’ DexNav feature and the PSS really give HGSS a run for its money. Also, gliding on Latias/Latios is an amazing feature too! So, while I still rank HGSS as the best, I wouldn’t count ORAS out of the running entirely. Fire Red and Leaf Green are sort of in the middle ground area because there isn’t that much you can do with Kanto (same applies to LGPE). Now… When it comes to BDSP… Just play the originals or Platinum.

For us who grew up playing red/blue, the wireless adapter feature was "all the money" as Greeks say. Countless hours of grinding the E4 to lvlup your pokemon, then 1v1 or 2v2 battles with the rest of the gang. We even held mini tournaments.

HGSS also had best events and pokemon distribution and everything only issuse being wild pokemon being low level but that also makes the game challanging since you have to grind a lot

I will always say that if HGSS was done in Gen 5 instead of Gen 4, it'd be the *undisputed* greatest Pokemon games of all time.

Because generations weren't a concept when Johto was conceived. Back then, the Johto Pokemon were supposed to be rarer and/or newly discovered, explaining their absence from the gen 1 games. Most gym leaders wouldn't have so-called rare Pokemon.

HG and SS were fantastic games, and I really enjoyed them. I also liked the gen 3 remakes, but they were so modernized that some of the charm is lost

HGSS don't fix any of the actual issues with Gen 2, so I don't believe they're the best remakes They don't fix the lack of actual good gen 2 pokemon, the pokemon still mainly suck Gym leaders in Johto barely use Johto pokemon The level curve is god awful, causing you to have to grind on pokemon half your level half the time The team rocket storyline in HGSS is by far the worst in the entire series, and it's not even close whatsoever, they don't even do anything and have no climax or tension Johto is horribly flawed and HGSS failed to fix the flaws, so to me they can't ever be the best remakes

The thing is, some of the features were already on the original games, so I don't think we should give it credit for having those features

Currently replaying it! Certain things annoy me like the insane levels the gym leaders are on and how original Johto Pokémon like Houndour and Larvitar are blocked behind Kanto, but they are very very special games.

The level curve is one of the only flaws I see in HGSS. It truly is a fun game. Already did a 4th restart and it's still fun

For Gen 10, we need a grizzled, bearded Red with a team of level 100 Pokémon as the final piece of post game content.

You also forgot about the Safari Zone, which gives access to the pokemon you couldn't get before the postgame in GSC before the post game, new events, the Physical/Special Split, shinies not being locked to your pokemons' stats, new areas to explore with Rock Climb, restoration of the Cerulean Cave and a ton of legendaries being added, and an Elite Four rematch with stronger and newer teams.

If they remake black and white i want it to be in the same graphic style as b/w/1/2 2d, top down, 2.5d sprites, i just want another ds style Pokémon game

Man, no one ever gives Steven's battle in emerald the credit it deserves 😭 that battle was tough!

it's funny that Gamefreak's best pokémon remake was developed by a skeleton team of like 15 people with no budget and a 5 month deadline but they can't make a decent 3D pokémon game to the same caliber with millions of dollars in budget and hundreds of people working on them.

Now if only we can get a pokemon game that can bring back all the features we loved over the years instead of boxing them forever

I like gen 5, but the only reason I want gen 5 remakes is to be closer to gen 6 remakes, seriously I think Game Freak's biggest error was to skip Pokemon Z and I'm still waiting for Kalos to have the game it should had.

My favorite feature of this game was the following Pokémon. They had so many different reactions to the world around them, like rock types not enjoying the water and multiple reactions based on their HP, Status, etc. They'd even have many map specific interactions, such as greeting specific but unimportant NPCs or commenting on nearby landmarks. No other game had this much detail with the follower interactions. LGPE did pretty good and had amazing Rides, but was missing some like the type specific reactions. BDSP's was repetitive with few unique interactions. SwSh and SV didn't even try and made the Pokémon give a basic happy animation no matter the circumstance. Gen 8 and 9 couldn't even give Pokémon decent follow speeds, most can't even match the walk speed.

HOLD ON, GOLD HAS A POST GAME? Ho-oH, IM COMING BACK FOR YOU MY FRIEND

If we do get gen 5 remakes it would be awesome if they follow the gen 5 trajectory with the games taking place at a later time…. (10 years later or sum idk) …since unova is United States based (new york ) and Hawaii is in the usa Alola is sorta available to be a part of the game(especially with there being an airport). Then we get an extension of a great generation with updated graphics and features 🔥🔥🔥

SoulSilver was the first Pokémon game I owned and therefore I have an extremely strong bias and cannot participate in this argument because of it.

Gen 2 remakes are amazing, and my second favorite of them is OrAs. Weather or not you like Gen 6, the character's all got a major design upgrade and included the current gimmick at the time. Plus, alot of the music goes hard and contests were still fun to do. Plus the inclusion of flying around on mega Latias or Latios and finding rare pokemon and mythicals/legendaries that way was so cool.

Plus the Pokewalker was with me at all times during middle school

Gold/Silver and its remakes will always be the best out of all the generations. No mega forms, no region variats, no paradox pokemon, no weird gimmicks. Just good ol' pokemon in its prime without all the extra clutter.

Dude you for got the poke'ech. That came with the game so you could download a pokemon onto it and than walk around with it and feed. This also helped to level it up sometimes. The only pokemon game where you could literally walk around with your pokemon in real life.

Everyone complaining about the level curve is bad at the game, imagine having to be on equal level with the kids game RPG NPC teams to win

I think in terms of modernizing a classic ORAS did it better with greater changes. The game had online functionality for the secret bases for example. It also added a lot more lore to the series and had the Delta episode: one of the best postgame sequences to date. Also soaring. Both games could slug it out though.

Volo feels way more impactful personally, but thats because sinnoh was the region i had the most interaction with as a kid, but even i gotta admit, red is up there too. Gen 4 is just my favorite gen overall and i wouldnt have it any other way. RIP platinum remake, too bad you never got to exist

i think that reason is exactly why people like me and others who started on gen 2/3 love red so much. nowadays i see it as homage to the og games and that’s pretty cool but in the original gen 2 games (before pokemon got gigantic and they started to give player characters cannon counterparts) that was you in the old games. it’s everything that makes red huge now but instead of the pokemon trainer red hype it was “your main character” idk if that makes sense but it’s not really pokemon nostalgia at that point it’s personal nostalgia. it’s not the series you grew up with it’s the “past you”

i used to play semi pro , anyone u asked in those circuits wouod tell you alpha sapphire and omega ruby hands down , just had so many features that made the games infinitely easier to navigate

We need just a revamp of heartgold and Soulsilver on the switch. It was perfect with so many hidden secrets people are still finding em to this day. Just port it and change the graphics a bit to more of a 3D, add extra secrets, and maybe the additional hidden islands and legendaries as well as other region Pokémon that OR/AS had

Gen 5 doesn't need remakes. They are new enough games to not suffer from any of the problems solved by the previous remakes. What qol things do they even lack? What could anyone even want to change?

I still think Black and White the original and the sequel knocked it out the park. Maybe I just don’t want to mess up the good memories I had playing.

Also forgetting the Pokeathlon, the casino games, day and night of the console clock and the pokewalker, that game had so much things.

What region maps were those?? That wasn't Kanto and Johto??

I think they were going to make delta emerald a thing so they would add the battle frontier then but it got canceled

HGSS is my pride and joy. it was my first game; started playing at 10, now 21 :) still play to this day and I've spent the last 3 or so years dedicating some of my time studying the game to every last algorithmic detail. I just love this game and everything about it to pieces. when I say im obsessed, it's an understatement. there's nothing left for me to learn but I still love seeing videos about it

They are. Hands down. Every feature in that game was basically perfect. The pokemon follow system shoulda been more like BD/SP but otherwise it was perfect; restoring a classing playthrough with more content, better graphics, and a vast improvement of the post game. Blastoise, Feraligatr, Swampert, Empoleon, Vaporeon, and Ludicolo. My most memorable team ever.

Seeing as Heart Gold was my FIRST pokemon game, I'm glad that other people like it as well. really fun, amazing memories, and countless hours I've spent just playing the game, trying to hatch a shiny Cinderquil.

My absolute favorite part of this game was the Retro Music player I grew up playing Crystal and when i stumbled on that by accident I SCREAMED

its funny how the close ones are both related

As a kid who grew up on X and Y, ORAS was my introduction to older Pokemon games and i loved it.

Don't forget this was one of the first gens that solidified the current Pokemon mechanics, applying them to (imo) the best original games. Fairy type, physical/special split, hidden abilities... Everything added afterward were all single game specialties, nothing that's lasted beyond the gen

Gen III and Gen IV were peak Pokémon. So many great new Pokémon designs and evolution came from those generations and both the remakes in those gens and the remakes of those gens are great. I recently started playing Sapphire on the big screen via the GameBoy Player and I haven't been this captivated by a game for months. Omega Ruby added a TON of great features onto Hoenn and really made it feel like a fresh experience. It's unfortunate they had to cut some stuff from the original though. BDSP is an easy win for me too, cause ever since I watched a friend play Pokémon Collosseum as a kid, I've been dreaming of playing the mainline Pokémon games on a TV screen and BDSP is the official way to do that. I don't get the hate for it being "too faithful", I think the more ways we can experience an old region in, the better. It's been much more fun to me than PLA and some of the newer games (Gen VII), to be honest. Also who in their right mind hates it for the Chibi art style?! All of Generations I - V were made in that art style you uncultured plebs!

Soulsilver is definitely one of my favourite pokemon games ever. I still play on my copy i got when I was a child!

The only thing i don't like is how god damm long is grunts fight in any events
