    Did my first head gasket earlier this year. Also did the valves and timing chain while I was in there. One of biggest moments of accomplishments was firing it up after the job, then driving it to work the next day. The smile on my face never went away. There’s something about working on your own machine that does something to you. My advice: sort literally every nut and bolt into ziplock bags. Made the job 1000x easier.

    If you have the floor space putting the integral bolts/studs/nuts through a marked piece of cardboard, is another great way to prevent mixing them up. I had a near impossible to diagnose problem in a newer Tacoma throwing a super odd set of codes. Ones that Toyota said were impossible unless we really, really, screwed something up. That was until the customer came clean, in admitting he tried fixing it with a buddy, and they just put all the engine & trans bolts/studs&nuts in a single large pile.

    Got a 2004 Mercedes C230K with a blown headgasket for $1,500. I'm 5 months in, 80hrs work time, and I've still got a little bit to go. I remember my first replacement of the head gasket. I was most worried about the timing. I was afraid that if I did something wrong, it would end up with the renovation of the entire head. That car was a Volvo s70 2.4 turbo. The entire repair cost me almost $ 2,000, but it was worth it. I paid 250 $ for a car, so for $ 2250 I have a 200 horsepower car worth $ 3000-5000 and I love this car.

    Huge public service announcement, but keep in mind that some head gaskets are directional (as in "this side up") if you ever wanted to try the repair on your own. Also, I feel like they didn't stress enough that if you have a blown head gasket, there's a chance that the mating surface on the block or head could be warped, causing the new gasket to fail. And last thing, alway do an oil change after a head gasket before you start the engine. There could be coolant that made it's way into the the oil passages

  • @michaelbenardo5695

    @michaelbenardo5695

    If you drained the cooling system first, that won't be an issue. What IS an issue is the scrapings from the old one that get into to oil-ways.

    Subies aren't thaaaat bad. It comes down to the driver mostly, make sure it's got oil and if it's boosted just don't floor it at 2k rpm cause it'll destroy the engine. I had to trade in my sti to go back to school and the sales dude who test drove it did exactly that. I tried to explain to him how bad that is and to simply down shift when going uphill. He kept doing it. Any doubts I had about trading it in went out the window, I knew the car was fucked just by that short drive. Sure enough, I heard the guy who bought had the engine die on him literally 2 weeks later. I bought it new and drove it for 120k mostly on stage 2, had no issues. It is mostly the driver. Now I have a brz and love it.

    I just want to say how much I appreciate that you ACTUALLY look up and follow torque specs for the important bolts unlike alot of shade tree mechanics that think ts is "'til it stops then another good ugga dugga" like seriously THANK YOU!

    ur wrong, no real mechanic does that, the ugga dugga is real, and everyone says its a couple ugga duggas, unless its suspension, or inside engine repair.

    A lot of work you put in to this one. I almost had to do the same, because Santa Claus bring me a present last year for my vw 1.6 TDI , a blow head gasket . I got lucky to repair it with Steel Seal and after 4 month and a couple of thousands of miles it's working perfectly.

    on my old D15 civic (EF hatch) you didn't even have to pull the exhaust/intake manifolds out of the car, just loosen and pull away from the head, then remove all the electricals... made it so much easier...

    I actually got to do the headgasket on my 2001 jeep Cherokee last year, I did the headgasket intake/exhaust gasket arp head studs timing chain water pump injectors and distributor, I loved it, I took my time doing it because I was by myself but it was wonderful and now she runs better than ever

    0:33 seconds into the video. On Sunday of this very week. I just replaced a Valve cover gasket on my 4.2l inline6 GMC Envoy. I had to take the intake, air filter box, air intake "4200 Vortec" plenum, and intake manifold off. As well as the alternator, to have room for the intake forward upward sweep to remove the intake manifold. All just to get to the valve cover bolts. A few steps further and I could have removed the head and just done the head gasket since I was that far in there. But a blown head gasket wasn't the issue. Massive amounts of oil in the spark plug tubes (coil over plug system) meant a leaking valve cover gasket. It was the spark plug tube gaskets, but it still counts as a valve cover leak since those are apart of the valve cover gasket kit. FELT SUPER ACCOMPLISHED AFTER DOING THIS JOB! 👋💪💪💪😁

    dude my homie just snapped a head stud, but as he backed it out of the block, the broken part followed just due to the way it broke. when the head was off again, I just pulled it right out with my fingers. threads were fine, but stud was stretched and broken as fuck. same with the first one we torqued down. I suggested to him (before all this happened) that he should replace the head studs because they stretch, and he was like "nah, it'll be fine" well it was not fine. replace the head studs whenever you have to take the head off. I'd say we got lucky as F U C K
