Ойын-сауық

‘Quick’ ‘easy’ and ‘life-changing’ is how they’re being sold to us and from anywhere between £30 and £300 for a DIY test kit, food intolerance home tests are big business. Searches for the kits are up 250% on last year. So can they offer accurate results and help you effectively manage a food intolerance? Or, are they a gimmick not worth your time or money? Dr Nighat has taken not one - but two - and the results are worth sticking around for..

The NHS won't give you food intolerance test unless you have extreme symptoms and even then it's a huge waiting list. It's good to try to keep a food diary to recognise what you could be reacting too but sometimes it's hard to pin point the exact chemical causing reactions. I did an online test and they were very realistic to what I react too, although I know we can't assume it's accurate it does help. Doctors wouldn't help me work out what was wrong with my baby either due to long waiting list, it's very difficult to get help from the NHS these days they need more funding.

These tests need to be regulated. People are desperate to find out what may be causing their symptoms, they purchase a test which does not provide evidence based results. They then cut out a whole range of foods or food groups. This can ultimately put them at risk of nutritional deficiencies, weight loss or faltering growth in children. I’ve seen patients in clinic who have been in tears having followed these restrictive diets for years with no benefit to their symptoms, trying to then challenge these food beliefs and encourage them to reintroduce these foods can be very difficult and anxiety provoking. Keeping a food, mood and symptom diary can help to identify any symptom triggers. Or request to be referred to a dietitian who can support with this.

In other words a Fodmap test would be the answer. Sue Shepherd has a small book out, it’s a food reactors bible. Most food reactions are about the sugars in for and/or preservatives. Once you have seperated the two should you have both allergy and reactions it just takes an about six weeks to sort out what you can and can’t eat, or shouldn’t be eating. It takes longer than getting a test but they can take weeks also. The Fodmap way costs you $8 for the book or Fodmap lists are available on line. Sue Shepherds book is best as it contains shelf bought foods, tins packets etc where you find all the hidden nasties including sulphites, ( no wine) nitrates ( found in ALL deli meats.)

Leave it to the professionals…in case you get false positives….which is often the case with these kinds of tests….

I think these tests could be useful, but they need to be more thoroughly regulated. They should have to give more consistent and accurate results.

She said elimination diet is not the way to go, I strongly disagree as I have been to a proper allergy clinic where I was put on one which absolutely showed my intolerances, I see The professor who regularly appears on this morning about allergies is complaining to ofcom over this today, gp,s generalise they are not experts in allergies

I took both a delayed food allergy test and sensitivity test. After dropping all the foods on the list, my severe depression was gone. Was it a placebo? No. Years later I ate sunflower seeds. I developed severe back pains and then the depression came the day after. I dusted off the test result in my office and found out that sunflower seeds was a "borderline" food. Within three days of dropping it, the back pains and depresison left. No placebo effect there. I was finally cured with antibiotics thanks to a Chinese doctor who traced the whole problem to bad gut bacteria.
