    I dig this light, and just picked one up (off their site, Amazon sees to be OOS at the moment). I just made the move to full time RV living, so velcro and space are huge things for me! I have an Aperture 120D. Love it, bit the softbox makes it mammoth in my space. One thing I'd say, looking at your results would be that for soft lighting, some indirect bounce with this light might be the way to go. Seems bright enough you could hit it against a white wall, maybe some cheap white card from Michael's, etc. Or just get a sheet and make a "silk" out of it. I just did a 100 million dollar show where we used a ton of china balls on boom poles... so the sky really is the limit these days.

    Comprehensive review! This is the go to video for anyone considering Flex LEDs. I started with considering Godox 1000Bi and the just released Amaran P60C, but may settle for a Flex60 or 100 from Godox.

    I use Soonwell V-mount batteries. So far they have worked quite well. I was told that Soonwell actually makes their own cells. I want to get a flexible led but yeah it would be for mounting in strange places. Not on a stand. I have other lights already so this is on my want list for sure.

    Hey Gerald, yes one of the only reasons why this product is better than the traditional LEDs is that its flexible... but also its super light weight AND you can attach it anywhere!! VS traditional lights, with the stands.... can be a pain in the a... love your videos!!

    Aputure + umbrella makes the light look more beautiful! The flex panel looks more harsh on the face. If flexibility is the only advantage (and light output, of course), I'll keep my 672+umbrella for interviews. I am sure the weight of it is very very close (the power box form the flex panel looks heavy). Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for your reviews! I like the weight and how compact the Flexible LED lights are but it seems like the Falcon Eyes SO-28TD would be quicker to setup and would travel find because of it's build quality. Which would travel with? I have the Aputure LS 300D but I don't want to travel with it when I'm shooting solo.

    The Soonwell FB-21 even at 30% appears brighter. Maybe knocking down the power another 5% would be closer. It appears slightly harsher at the 30% setting. I like the color of the Soonwell but that can be subjective. Thanks for the video.

    For my taste, I like the softer highlights and shadow fall-off from the Aputure setup, but that might be more due to the diffusion from the umbrella vs a not so great softbox. Either setup looks good enough to me, however. Also, I really liked the glitzy look of those product shots!

    I totally agree with you. I have 3 12x24 flexible lights and I'm not digging them. I don't need the flexible material. I just use them on stands. The ones I have were cheap Fositan brand from Amazon. They mount with a 1/4" hole in the frame and they feel really flimsy when they're mounted. I wish I had gotten something that came with U-mount yokes. Also, I think 12x24 is an awkward size for my needs. I'd probably be better off with 12x12.

    First of all, I know it's an older video and I would pick the Aperture 672 since it was more pleasing and wrapped around your face better due to the better softbox. With that said I'm so torn on the huge control boxes and power supplies these flex lights come with. I only have experience with falcon and soonwell and they make the light's worthless for me. People don't talk much about how the flex lights might look like the perfect travel light but then after including and packing the control box and power supply it's like the same size and weight as all 3 of my 672's or my C120 II. Do you know of any flex lights that don't come with heavy control boxes and giant power supplies? I was retarted and never really saw reviews cover the giant power bricks and control boxes so I sit here with 4 flex lights and have never used them. :( Plus defusing them seems tough

    I really like Aputure lights, but they are really pricey. I think it all depends what you are shooting - I took several thousand product pictures of luxury watches and got the best results with the cheapest lights I ever bought - only about 10 Euros on eBay. They were quite dimm and soft, but the watches weren't moving - so I used long exposure times - results were pretty good. When it comes to "bigger" lights, I really like the 120 from Aputure ... and on the road the small AL-MX for backlighting and stuff. I was never very happy with the LED-lights with several hundred small leds ... I just don't like the reflections they produce. Regarding the flexibel leds ... well, I'm not really convinced and I don't like the way to set them up. Of course I might be totally wrong ;)

  • @geraldundone

    @geraldundone

    5 жыл бұрын

    @TheSmeagol630 - I think it's LEDs that made those brackets the way they are. It allows for such a huge spectrum of pricing from $10 to $5000. There was a time when the 3 top 1K lights (including the ARRI) were within 10% of each other price-wise. But now you have to consider if you want that ARRI 1K, or the 120D or the GODOX. All of which are fractions of each other. It's peculiar. Good for the consumer though.

    No kidding. I got to use an Arri Skypanel S30 during a workshop last year, and - besides some sick presets like fire and police lights - it had similar functionality to the GVM you reviewed. It is more powerful, and has a greater colour temp range, but not so much to warrant a C$5100 price difference.

    I see what you mean in terms of putting it up on a stand. I have a linkstar flex light. I like the whole idea of the flexible light. It allows you to use light in many more places. Thanks for bringing up things that others may not. On another note, your intro song has grown on me. HLG and RAW aren't even at the same level of abstraction in the video pipeline. RAW is the raw sensor readout. HLG is a luminosity curve applicable to a video format. There is no competition between them.

    The Aperture light at 30% is definitely softer and better diffused, but the level of light from the Soonwell at 9% is impressive. Still on the fence about these lights. I have to check out the other videos, but do you know off the top of your head what level of water resistance they're capable of (if any)? Hahaha! 😂 I'm not sure about the water resistance. My understanding is that you can clean the surface with water, so it could probably handle a splashing, but I think out in the rain would be a problem. And the control box would obviously not be water resistant at all.

    Worth noting that this isnt 50% more light than an Aputure 672, its actually 120-330% more light. Not sure where you got 50%, perhaps from simple photometric readings that dont account for beam angle or color temperature? 672C has 45W of led emitters, this light has 200W worth of emitters. the 672C uses only 23W of leds at 5600k or 3200k, this uses 100W at any color temp so its more than 4x as powerful.
