Are E Bikes really cheating?

Спорт

My first ride on an e-mtb and I set out to discover if it can be more fun than a regular mountain bike or is it just cheating?

It was an ebike that got me back into cycling. A Gocycle which I used throughout lockdown and for commuting. It gave me the confidence to buy a road bike again. And I enjoy riding both. Got my weight down from 77kg to 64kg and improved my fitness. I’m 66 and think both have a place for me.

I’ve just bought my first ebike a Bianchi Omni T XT and it’s brilliant. I’ve done more miles on it in the last few week, than on my road bike. I just put on my helmet and a coat, jump on it and have a go. No lycra or clipped in shoes. I still get a work out because after 15MPH I’m peddling a 27 kilo bike. It’s a real relevant, and great fun.

An ebike got me back into cycling after a 16 year hiatus. I’m a flatlander who now lives at high altitude, and the ebike was an equalizer to help me with a couple of hills that I would never have made it up. I have a permanent health condition which makes exercise extremely difficult. On my non-ebike, I was only able to ride 2-3 miles at high altitude, but 30 (using almost no assist) on my ebike. That helped me transition back to my non-ebike, and I’m now riding 7-9 miles at altitude on a regular basis. Many people ride ebikes in what I call “scooter mode,” and don’t take advantage of the exercise benefits. That’s their choice, but it gives the whole ebike community a reputation as being lazy.

I used to be an anti-ebike snob. But that changed when I talked to a 70+ year-old man who explained that without the ebike his heart condition wouldn’t allow him to ride at all. Who am I to judge?!

For those who truly need an ebike, great. For most people the choice is ebike or get in shape. Cheating yourself. Just keep your times away from Strava leader boards and leave real riders alone. Strava should have a scooter category for ebikes.

I've got three "traditional" bikes and train regularly, but I do love mixing in some riding on my e-mtb. Great for recovery days, for hitting terrain not rideable on normal bike, and sometimes for a good training ride, you can put as much of your own watts as you want into the ride. "Cheating" is just something gatekeepers love to throw out there as they judge others vs riding their own ride.

Same here, I did 160 miles on my roadbike last week, and 1 25 mile day day riding motorcycle singletrack on my E Mt bike. I would have been carrying a normal mt bike up the super steep rutted climbs, but with extreme effort I get up them on my e bike. Way too much fun!

Thanks. I saw E-bikes used in the Alps a few years back , and I thought it was the future for MTB'S. Insane climbs and longer rides ? Who doesn't want that ? BUT. on my local , the weapon I see is more motorcycle than bicycle , fat tires , really fast and huge ! I think the less expensive E-bike brands are the norm , and it's a mix of folks on them . I have no problems with them . More riders means better infrastructure !

It does look fun, but I’m still put off by the cost. To be fair though, the cost of bikes and components is quite ridiculous compared to almost anything else. When will the price settle down? Electronic goods seem to start off expensive, then the price falls significantly to make them accessible to the masses with most of the tech and features of the, one-time, top of the range item. Obviously this kind of economic scenario does not seem to be happening in the bike world sadly.

im fortunate enough to have a ridden an ebike for 25km yesterday (my friend sells them for a living) pedal down and i felt the surge of power from the motor, just amazing . we literally blasted up and down the hills with minimal effort . and i was fresh even after an epic day of riding. if you asked me if E-mtbs are cheating...i'd say for myself who is still healthy and able bodied, yes its cheating as far as cardio is concerned. skill wise its just the same , if not just a little more difficult. but however my friend he just got a knee surgery 3 months ago and the e-mtb is absolutely instrumental in helping him get fit and happy.

I ride roadbikes a lot, roadbikers are the most OCD group on bicycles for sure. They are strictly conservative as to how to ride a bike. Which is staring at the wheel ahead of you, pedaling really hard, and going further and harder all the time. That's what they do. Mention E Mt bike to some of them and they tend to lose it, its not within their boundary. A person must not be up to snuff if he needs a motor assist. Cheating. --------------- I ride for fun, and an E Mt bike is SO much fun, it reminds me of my many years racing dirtbikes. The Canyon CF8 ON I ride is more fun every time I ride it, there are tricks to riding e mt bikes for sure. But I still ride my amish/manual bikes way more than e bike.

I have an e-bike but ride about 70% of the time without assist. I can get my heart rate up to the same level as my road bike. Of course you CAN drive an ebike in a way thats challenging. You CAN do math without the calculator in front of you, You COULD remember all the stuff organized by your phone. But will you? I know i wouldn't. The question is not if it's cheating, the question is what part of driving a bike you value more, easy fun or hard to get rewards? It’s sad that the world has to conform to your standards. Apparently no one can be elderly or disabled and still want to get some exercise on an ebike. Here’s a news flash, I was only able to return to regular cycling after two years of minimal assist on an ebike. I had given up cycling forever due to health issues which are no fault of mine. In your world it has to be 💯 effort, or I’m not trying. Well guess what, I’m back to regular cycling, plus lost almost 40 lbs thanks to an ebike. I see disabled veterans, including some with prosthetic limbs, riding ebikes here at high altitude too. I hope for your sake that you have perfect health and never age!

  • @rjphotos

@umfilmmaker8253 I quite agree. I’m late forties, ridden road bikes all my life but suffering with knee complaints that meant several week breaks between rides, and that issue isn’t fixable realistically since it’s crumbling cartilage. Permanent retirement from the hobby was looking very likely. Now I have an e bike, the impact on my knees is significantly reduced. But riding heart rate can still go high. You can definitely get some serious exercise riding assisted. Cycling is so much more than just a health goal. Why do people who aren’t racing lust after ever more lighter, efficient or aerodynamic bikes - because it makes it easier? That’s definitely part of it.

  • @bradsanders6954

I solve that issue by riding a normal roadbike lots, a normal gravel bike, and even a 24 lb XC mt bike. But once a week I plan a gnarly steep e mt bike ride, too steep to pedal generally. Its a lotta work even with a motor. Its what you make of it. Its supposed to be fun! All bikes are for fun.

I'm from the Netherlands and here even children from the age of 13 ride an ebike to school and I'm talking about distances of less than 3 kilometers! And then people think it's strange that children and young people are getting fatter! The Ebike is something that will cause far too fat and lazy people.

I disagree. If it gets people out and riding where they were not going to ride at all, it's got to be better. You can also choose to ride an Ebike as hard as you can for a whole lot further that you would have done on a normal bike and get just as much exercise. If you really wanted to get the most exercise for a certain distance, you would forgo the bike altogether and just run. It's not Ebikes making people lazy, it's people choosing to be lazy.
