Danner Bull Run Moc Toe Review - Not much is known about what's inside Danner's moc toe boot so I bought a pair to cut in half to see how they are built and review the quality. This is episode 2 of the Moctober series where I am going to cut apart some of the most popular moctoe boots like Red Wing, Danner, Thorogood, etc.

I've worn these boots for 3 years on construction sites and really work in them. Had them resoled 3 times. No issue with the counter cover. Very comfortable and durable after initial break in of the leather which took about 2 weeks. These soles are soft and do wear but are great to stand on all day.

What kind of work do you do? My thorogoods start smelling bad after 7 months or so. I take care of the outside. The inside well I’ve never seen any type of care. Changing the insoles? I wear carhartt socks. Just bought these today. My second pair.

@@Atvmx21 Really really comfortable, and no complaints on the external durability so far. Only very minor drawbacks at this point are the cloth toebox liner definitely has a few holes and there seems to be a slight bump developed in one tiny spot on the right boot's sole. Agreed, I have been through piles and piles looking for vintage secondhand shoes and in my experience the most common fails are, in order : liner, counter, stitches (as in deformation not as in breakage), and welt (as in : some have ridiculously narrow welt edges and end up being eaten into by abrasion, dust and stitch stress)

I decided to give the bull runs a shot. I bought them today right before work and wore them straight out of the box. They’re much better for the work I’m doing since they are lighter and less bulky than my thorogoods. The stitchdown construction was a bit of a pro and con. Con because of the potential lack of longevity but a pro for the flatter foot bed.

I bought these as my first pair of Danners 2 years ago. Wore them out and bought the exact same pair again, great boot. I’m a builder and I got a solid 8 months out of them with zero maintenance (not even a cleaning) working win rebar, concrete, steel work, etc. The first thing to fail was the toe box stitching where my foot bends. The sole started wearing smooth under the ball of my feet after 6 months or so, but they still gripped about the same. For never putting any maintenance into them, 8 months impressed me, that’s about the same amount of time I get out of a pair of redwings. I’ve recently bought Danner’s Quarry boots with the same christy sole and they’re even better so far. Danner has a repeat customer in me.

I sold boots at an outdoor store in SF during the 90's. I have a pair of Danner Ft Lewis boots that I've replaced the sole 3 times. They're stitch down construction and still going strong. I have a pair of Italian made Merrell wilderness backpacking boots that I hiked the entire Pacific Crest Trail in and they're stitch down as well. We sold a few Danner hiking models like the Mountain light and Ft Lewis for military types and the Canadian for hunters. Danner always had very informative clinics for store employees back then. They really stressed their leather and stitch down construction. The also had the best "pro-deal" for store employees, 40% below wholesale. I really liked all the technical construction information about outdoor gear and since our store carried a wide selection of boots it was easy to find the right boot for the customers feet and needs. I like all the detail you go into about construction and find your channel very informative.

I also currently have a pair of Iron Rangers and Jim Green Rangers, but the boot I wear 5 days out of 7 are the Bull Runs. I’ve been in my Bull Run moc toes for 6 months and love them! Just like you said, this isn’t a framer/masonry/plumbers boot. I’m an electrician and HVAC tech with some general contracted work in the mix and it’s the perfect boot for what I do. I clean and oil the leather every 2 weeks which gets them back to near new condition in 20 minutes. The sole is definitely lighter, spongier than a redwing wedge but does provide a very cozy, anti-fatigue experience. The boot keeps its structure well for being thinner leather and handles 10f-110f temperatures provided you size right for changing your socks for the season. I just ordered the Vintage Lux version for weekends as I’ve been opting for these 7 days a week. I highly recommend this boot!

I've been wearing a pair of regular toe Bullruns for about 18 months. I really like them because they broke in really easy and are exceptionally comfortable. I'm hard on shoes/boots and they're holding up ok. The soles have worn a little faster than I expected, and now I know to keep an eye on the heel area. I also have a pair of Thorogoods and like them quite a bit better from a durability standpoint - but they were harder to break in and are not as comfortable. I'll be very interested to see how they compare.

I had a similar experience with the Thorogoods! The welt and/or the leather "joints area (where two pieces of leather are sawn together)" was digging into my foot really badly on one of the boots. Then on the other boot, the cork must have been mis-shaped in the foot-bed....it made my foot pronate inwards and gave me a painful knee. I could not use them at all! Very disappointed.

I have really liked my Thorogood moc toes. They have speed laces unlike the Red WIngs, are much cheaper. have a shank, are unlined unlike some other moc toes, good quality leather, and have a removable insole which for work boots I view as a positive (especially with my flat feet). Redwing and others make fantastic boots, but for the price I think the Thorogood's make better beaters

you're right about the fabric in the heel area, it doesn't last as long, I've used mines for about a year (occasionally) and the fabric rub off, but compared with red wing's iron ranger and chippewa's cibola and aldrich they're way more comfortable out of the box, almost sneaker like comfortable

I have a pair of steel toe Bull Runs that I use for work. Most of this work consists of factory tours and light work within manufacturing settings. For this type of light work, they are a phenomenal boot for the price. They are very comfortable and I find myself not needing to rip them off my feet the second I get home. Like most boots in this segment, they're not great for winter. And as you mentioned in the video, for a more heavy duty workload, I would likely suggest a different boot.

I’ve had my pair of black Bull Runs two years now. Broke them in at a few different work sites the first two months running data cable from workspace to networking rooms and terminating both ends at mostly new construction sites. They took a beating. Went back to an old pair of RWs Supersole for the heavy duty work and wear the Danners just casually now for light duty work around the house and workshop. Saving money to get the RW Heritage Moc now.

Bull Runs are the most "deconstructed" Danners, meant to feel like leather socks. The original run, with the Vibram lug sole, before they switched to the moc-toe and the wedge, were stupidly comfortable to hike in because they *breathed* I own a pair of Christie-soled moc-toe Bull Runs and comparing them to the Loggers or even the Mountain Lights is silly. The Loggers are built in straps and layers to provide stability for a person walking on a slope, doing dangerous work. The Bull Run would never do that job.

They’re pretty much as simple as a boot gets and I think that’s their strength. They don’t feel like big heavy clomping around boots, they’re light and comfortable and the soles are almost reminiscent of that gummy Doc Marten feel but sturdier because of the shank and the wide base. They’re not hardcore heavy duty boots, they’re just a nice thing to have on your feet that can support your ankles and get some work done.

I’m not in the trenches anymore of hardcore labor much anymore “thank god” I have moved up the supervising jobs now. I think I am going to try these and see how they play out. I’m a professional land surveyor and I have been wearing the Danner Bull Run Moc Toe for many years. Here is my review. They’re very comfortable with short break in time of 1-2 weeks. I prefer the tobacco color as it is stiffer (less oil) and I have found it to be more durable. I get them re-soled at a local cobbler for $95, 3 times before I buy a new pair. So they last me 3 years +/-. My first pair was the brown and after 2 years the leather separated/tore at the stitching near the lace holes. I have not had that problem with the tobacco. I agree with you on your review, my 2 complaints are; the brown is over oiled IMO and that inner fabric material at the the heel 18:19 breaks down right around the 2.5 year mark, that should be leather. I also use the Danner RAT for surveying on steep slopes. These are the US Marine issue boots. Because I use them rarely they will last a very long time. I average 10k steps a work day in them.
