Danner Bull Run Boot Review - Danner makes one of the most popular moc toe boots especially in the work boot world. Is it one of the best work boots or is it just a overhyped boot? We found a well worn Danner Bull Run Lux to cut in half to see what's inside to see if they are worth it after 1000 miles of wear and how they compare to red wing, thorogood, thursday, and whites boots.

These are my old boots! I'm so glad they got one last use out of them before the graveyard. I've been rooting for Steven Segal ever since I saw the option and to see it finally land there on my own personal boots made me laugh out loud. I will say this, despite the Bull Run's flaws I found them insanely comfortable during the hottest summer months. They felt more like leather Converse than actual boots. I wish they held up better, but at least they were comfortable while they lasted.

@@ianturnbow7011 my current favorite pair are a pair of Red Wing 8146 Roughneck. I've tried the Thorogood 6", the Danner, I tried the White's Perry twice and had two separate failures on two separate pairs of boots in under a week of wear each. For all Rose Anvil talks up the Perry it has massive QC issues if you do some digging online. The Roughnecks get worked just as hard as any of my other boots, and are taking it like a boot should. Yes they are one of the most expensive options, but they punch well above their weight class in comfort and durability, and have a full leather interior. They truly feel like the boot I've been looking for this entire time.

With the Danner Bull Run, because they are a stitch down construction, your Cobbler can easily scrape out the lasting board, and slide in a leather one during a resole.

  • @Condor1970

    @Condor1970

    3 ай бұрын

@@myhomiealex6 The one big problem with the Bull run wedge boots, is it also uses a plastic heel counter that has a piser going up the back of your achilles tendon. This raised section over time will crack and break off, resulting in a sliced open hole on the back of the heel counter. This is basically the end of your boot. If they used a leather insole, and leather heel counter, they would cost an extra $30, but would be well worth the increase in price.

I've been wearing my Bull Run Moc Toes every day for the past 2 years. In about 8 months of use, I discovered that on the bottom of both boots, the outsole was split following the end of the shank. This didn't concern me much as I bought mine from the factory second store and the boots were already a year old when I bought them. I figured the split was due to age. That's probably still true, but now I know that I'm not the only one to experience this. That being said, they're still my absolute favorite pair of boots and are the most comfortable thing I have ever put on my feet. When it comes time to resole them, I'm definitely going to do it. I also have a pair of the Danner Bull Run Chelsea since I like the Moc Toes so much. We'll see how those wear out. Thank you for doing this video, man! It's definitely insightful!

I posted the comment below on your original review. I just want to add that I was taught to care for my boots both growing up and it was certainly reinforced during my military career. With a a little more TLC these boots would have likely been good for many years. I don't intend this as an insult of anyone and how they care for boots. I certainly understand the amount of effort that goes into cleaning and caring for boots. It is time consuming and it's up to each person to decide how to best use their time. I've been wearing the Bull Runs for over a year. I've worn all sorts of work boots for the last 60 years including issue military boots during my time in the Army. I also currently have a pair of Iron Rangers and Jim Green Rangers, but the boot I wear 5 days out of 7 are the Bull Runs. Since I've only had them a year I can't speak to their longevity, but the comfort is beyond compare to any other work boot I have owned.

About the 2 piece v. 1 piece for the toe portion of a moc toe boot, I find that 2 piece, over time, takes on that shape that, to me, seems so classic on a moc toe (think of the RW 877s or 75s). Not so much w the 1 piece. The 1 piece has the shape of a regular boot. I'd rather have that distinctive shape. It's subtle, but I like it.

Seeing how the fabric liner and the fiberboard insole held up compared to both parts made from thick leather like in the Red Wings is very telling. Huge difference, and replacing the lining and insole on these would be too expensive. Stitching the toe box back together is much less of an issue, that can just be accessed from the outside and is a pretty simple job. Although I doubt most non-abused boots would ever face that issue in the first place. As far as the shank is concerned, I had a similar issue with shanks on sneakers. A shank just doesn't work with a thin and soft sole.

Danner can rebuild any boot for a reasonable cost; if you're local you can just drop them off, but even people that live here just send them in for resoling or panel fixes (heel counter would probably be every third resole for me). I have the regular Vibram lug sole and fabric panels because my use model is hiking/exploration/off road sports but the construction isn't much different. Red Wings are similar, though, if you have a good RW shop in town - it's pretty much 75 bucks to get a resole on whatever boot I've went out to repair here in town. Even locals mail off boots to Danner to get them repaired :-) since the boots are completely assembled/built in USA it makes sense they can refresh any component of it quickly and at a minimal cost.

I can comment on this as this is my old pair of boots I sent in. I work general new residential construction, so they've seen a lot of shovel and ladder time, roofing, concrete, you name it. A little bit of everything

These boots are considerably less bully and lighter than its competitors. Redwings and Thorogood look massive next to these and when I’m working in tight spaces a smaller boot is nice.

I got these for more of a dress/casual/light work boot. I just love the look over redwing and the the others except maybe nicks but I don't have $500 for shit kickers right now though they'd probably last 20 years of use like that. Love the bull run profile but kinda ridin wishing I'd went for the whites now.

I will always buy the Bull Runs because I had the Red Wings and they were the best built pair of boots that were so impossible to wear due to pain. Id rather a less lasting boot thats comfy.

the uppers are different on the whites and JKs compared to the danners. they top of the ankle is forward of the heel on the danners and red wings. the whites and JKs are built like you spend more time pointing your toe than bending down on your ankle. I got a pair of whites and they leave like a 3" gap between my Achilles and the back of the boot. I dont get it, why do they add that extra curve? the danners fit perfect

I had a pair of danner bull runs in steel toe that I used for about a year and a half before they got pretty uncomfortable and Wore out. My main issues were the counter and the liner like you mentioned. After a while they just felt floppy. I ended up switching to nicks and have never looked back since

I bought a pair of these about 11 months ago and here's my complaint: after wearing them for at least 40 hours per week since then, they've really just broken in! They were super uncomfortable, especially the cuff, which was very stiff and rubbed my ankle raw, and the tongue, which is too thin and allows the laces to press against my instep right through the thin leather. I just stopped into the Red Wings store today and told them about my issues with the Danner Bull Runs and they showed me the Irish Setter "Wingshooter", which is similar in design to the Danners but corrects the issues of the thin tongue and stiff cuff. I think those will be my next work boots.

@@kenpriest5672 I wound up getting a pair of Wingshooters. They are a little narrow but that's my only complaint so far. Hopefully they'll stretch out with time.
