Are black soldier fly larvae the solution to sourcing sustainable protein on-farm?

At Wood Farm, the Mear family is testing carbon-neutral protein sources to reduce their dependence on imported soy. In addition to locally grown white lupins, they are turning to peas and beans while also supplementing with amino acid-rich black soldier fly larvae.
The farm began using black soldier fly larvae for their chickens in 2018 after being approached by the company Better Origin, a group of Cambridge University graduates whose primary goal is to reduce the consumption of soy in animal production. Through artificial intelligence, the company uses food waste to feed and raise its larvae. Within two weeks, the larvae can be added to animal diets as a sustainable source of protein. Better Origin believes that replacing the poultry industry’s reliance on soy in this way could help producers avoid 130 metric tons of emissions, repurpose 160 metric tons of food waste and save 5.6 hectares of land from deforestation per year while also increasing poultry productivity and welfare.

There. Here's Something that may help, if you haven't done it yet. I accidentally forgot a feed bag full of oats outside. It was a paper feed store bag, and it got wet. Not sure how long it took, but the oats fermented, and apparently attracted black soldier flies. I only noticed them because there were soo many larvae, they were falling out of the truck bed on to the ground. When I checked it out, there were thousands of them. Now that we have chickens again, I'm going to give this a try on purpose. Maybe this idea will help you as well.

    1. Our soy farming is done by no till techniques. While you are ploughing your soils with the declared purpose to decompose it's organic matter and throw away the resulting CO2 on the atmosphere, we are fully committed to improve, year after year, our best ways to sequester carbon on our fields through aggregating more organic matter, what further improves the fertility and increase even more the efficiency of mineral fertilizers use.
