Are Batteries Radioactive?

Ғылым және технология

Alkaline Batteries are actually slightly radioactive!
This is caused by potassium 40, a radioactive isotope of potassium found in all natural potassium. Alkaline batteries commonly use potassium hydroxide as their alkaline base.
Thanks to Brandon for pointing this out to me! \o/

Note: All common alkaline batteries are slightly radioactive, not just the brand you see.

KZread comments? Toxic?! But seriously yea, youtube is both one the greatest websites for discovering awesome people like yourself that I wouldn't otherwise have found, but also simultaneously is the website I hate visiting the most with the largest collection of vocal insanity that isn't confined to some obscure site. Facebook is #2. Ether way, glad to see a new upload, you make this turd-site worth visiting :3

Everyone who thanks me is very welcome including Tom, I didn't expect them to be detectably radioactive either until I tested a leaked battery with a potassium carbonate on one of its terminals and detected the 40K betas! Note: the coating is indeed potassium carbonate (also known as "potash" from burnt plant matter) as KOH exposed to air reacts with CO2 overtime forming the coating. My other KZread channel is: kzread.info/dron/MPLqAaPT6_GxbbrEswRI6w.html :)

I just learned a lot from this. Thanks for explaining every step you were doing, from how the scintillator probe works, what a Compton edge is, what the y and x axis mean, calibration, explaining the lead peak since its fluorescing from cosmic radiation, even what the nomenclature! That really helped!

i heard that the salts from leaked alk batteries is the radioactive part of it, not sure why they specified those salts, maybe potassium 40 is more present if a rotting chemical reaction occurs?

On the off chance you do look at these comments, have you done anything with lithium ion batteries or NiCad? I use both on the regular and I'm now very curious. Great vids BTW. You're just quirky enough!

+StanJanParanormal From my knowledge lithium batteries contain absolutely no potassium at all but but rather contain lithium salts as the electrolyte and lithium metal hence the name.

Thanks Brandon. As our name implies our research, we have found that some types of battery sources drain on remote location even when brand new, right out of the package. Lithium seems to suffer the worst, but back before it was populous so did Alkaline whereas the normal carbon (?) based batteries seem to go unaffected. Just reaching for a common ground between the two , but apparently this isn't it.

I'm thinking there hasn't been enough people commenting at the end. So you decided to throw that in there so you can read what they have to say later. I could be wrong of course or it could be a pure marketing strategy. A good example of that would be the explicit language label on the on the music.

Could you check laptop, iPad, cell phone, and tablets? I think that would be cool to see, if any; differences? On a side note: Always better to repel negativity and intake the positive. I always look at it this way, and learned to treat toxic comments like wannabe bullies lol. Ignore, be faster than they are, and let them get themselves hurt, trying to catch you🤣(act like they ain't there👍🏻). Trolls are sub-par fascist's and have already made up their mind on going all in; soon as they get the response they want. Kinda sad huh?!🤣 It's just a game to them, not ever real, in any way, brother.

I did test 1st gen iPad and found it radioactive (due to potassium in glass). Some phones/pads are radioactive due to their glass containing potassium. The "hottest" so far as been the 1st gen iPad. No other products (of the sort you mentioned) had significant readings (always less than 2x background).
