@@BecomeTheKnightSay what you will about their sound. That's up to personal taste, but you can tell they are genuine and have never really had a point where they seemed to have phoned it in for a quick paycheck without having to put in the effort. Looking at you, Metallica. And that is one thing that keeps Avenged Sevenfold up there among my favourite bands. Even when I don't agree with some of their creative decisions, I can still appreciate them. Don't get me twisted though, I still really enjoy this track. The writing is pretty strong and I like the darkness of the mix for the most part, excluding Matt's vocals (the production, not his technique), and the kick drum.

They always manage to reinvent themselves and find a new sound on every single album. Excited to hear what the rest of the album sounds like.
Also, fyi: the strings that come with the solo, are not samples. These are real strings, recorded. This is one of the main reasons this album took a this long to be made. They wanted to use real strings, not samples, and with what happened in the last years it was really difficult

All of there projects after waking the fallen had real strings on it.
Avenged coming in killing it and separating the fan base once again, as they do every release. Can’t wait for the album!!
The strings before the solo are real. They brought in a 78 peice orchestra for this album. In a interview, synyster gates said that they put together all the arrangements for every instrument in the orchestra. I'm excited to hear what they do with that considering one of my fav parts in a song like The Wicked End, is that orchestra section in the middle.
They’ve always been different every album. They’ve been very open about city of evil, how when it came out fans hated it because it wasn’t the hard-core stuff. Now 18 years later people are calling it their best album!! Give it time.

His solo work on The Stage album was just so good, and then that single Set Me Free just proved to me that he's a top 10 guy in guitar today.
On the first listen I didn’t know what to think, but after many relistens, I like it. It’s not their best work, but it has me intrigued for the rest of the record. Hardly ever (nowadays ) is the lead single the best song on the album. Most times it’s just the most simple and palatable song which makes sense from a marketing standpoint, but I was hoping for a smasher of a lead single, but this feels more like a trailer than the song that’s supposed to take center stage. Especially with G O D with 3 songs, it seems like those and the title track are the main focus of the record, but I could be wrong. Cool song through and gets me excited for the record.

Completely agree. After a couple listens I could completely understand why they chose it as the lead single. It'll get the airplay and will likely be their set opener. What I love the most is the music video once you get to the part where the skeleton flips everything over and it has a barcode on it is when you without a doubt will get what the song is about if you didn't already, it was like everything clicked for me, these guys have always had great music videos in my opinion, and as far as the song goes I would've still liked it if it didn't have the solo but that has to be one of Synyster's greatest works in my opinion, like man he has improved over the years for sure with songwriting solos yet still being shreddy and flashy in between. I've also always been a huge fan personally of the vocals, but the change isn't too harsh and honestly I'd say it's just him getting older, it's like big surprise your voice changes when you get old. But he still sounds like Matt Shadows and I have no doubt he can still do most of the older stuff it just comes down to a small change to me at least that doesn't really affect how I feel on the vocals, I don't think they really got better or worse honestly. As for the drum sound, "over-analyzing" them doesn't really give me the same thing you said here, I don't really hear it too much, I personally think they sound pretty great actually and I especially love the kick sound, I'd say the drums are similar to the previous album even. And overall I definitely see the rumors here that they're expanding on the sound they had on "The Stage" which is fun because it's nice seeing them take on a more "songwrity" style with the whole added Proggyness stuff. I feel the OG fans might not like the slightly Industrial elements though, but I don't mind it. I think it suits the theme of the song.

I believe they had a full orchestra for the album, as well as they said they were influenced by Kanye before all the shit happened. Not to mention the vocal problems Shadows had for them to stop touring. The song was one that would have been kinda weaker on the Stage but it still feels like an evolution of that. Ending solo is fucking killer

Arguably the best reaction I've seen to this track. Would love to hear Mike do a full interview with Matt or Brian cause this is an album that a ton of people just won't get and will therefore label as "bad". Someone with a background in prog or avant-garde would be able to pick up on the intention behind each segment of the track pretty quickly, as was shown here.
@subutaynoyan5372

Matt openly said that he doesn't want to overproduce their albums anymore, because it becomes too much a product than artistic expression. And that they wanted to amplify almost everything they use in their music occasionally, and nerf out their usual habits to see what's gonna happen. And his commentary about Syn is what I think as well. Brian is a very good guitarist, but his approach to the instrument isn't about achieving perfection, it's like a flow and more about expression. He doesn't use too many effects, doesn't resort to tonal procedures as much, plays very clean and with self-titled album, he became quite the neo-classical vibe.
I love the arrangement and the songwriting in this track, I think almost all of my gripes come down to the mix not the production. The drums and the vocals in particular as you stated (at first I thought the solo was missing some brightness but in the context of what it does for the song I think its a good choice). The drums really seem to drift in the background until the cymbal work comes in, and the snare feels really dry and flat for such a powerful, simple beat. The vocal performance is solid, a bit tame but I think it just makes the important sections stand out, but the mix is appalling. They are very boxy and quiet, making it get lost behind the synth/guitar, and tbh I really think it would have benefited from some vocal harmonies/counter melody in certain sections.

I haven't been excited for an A7X album in a long time. This song is sick. I am cautiously optimistic for the new album.
Took me a few listens to warm up to it, but I'm really digging this snare sound actually
its a song that grows on me more as I listen to it but at first I wasn't a fan of the sound. now that I'm listening to it for the 5th, 6th, 7th and so on times the composition makes more sense and the musical style they went with intrigues me
Not bad, I am also interested in listening to their new stuff. Speaking of new stuff have you had a chance to check out Haken's Fauna? I haven't watched a livestream in ages being in Aus, so I don't even know if you've listened to the singles.😅 Edit: I have since checked out the list for SSF, fair critique still don't know how much you've listened to, but I really like the album. I thank you once again for getting me into Haken in the first place.
I remember hearing you say awhile that one thing you liked about Synyster Gates was that he has actively improved his playing with every release, and that couldn't be more evident in this track. While I wouldnt say it was his best solo, I felt like it was noticeably cleaner than the solos from The Stage and H2TK, while still keeping his identity.
I heard the song before this video dropped and immediately knew you'd like it lol
The drony guitar sounds like something alice in chains would do
Honestly, watching your video definitely gave me a new perspective on this song. I was really desperate for more “metal” stuff as you would say but honestly, they probably weren’t going for that kind of style. I do agree that the acapella section was defenitely my favorite part. That really brought me back to their previous album and I’m honestly a fan of the stage as a whole.
Not a huge fan of this song, but it's got me excited to see what else they have coming up
After the first listen I knew I was gonna like it I just needed a couple listens to digest it cause it was waaaay out of left field from what I was expecting. I’m very intrigued about the rest of the album
I absolutely love this song and the vocals, and have heard people shitting on the mix but i didnt get it, until now because you are spot on with the vocals being hard to understand. Overall tho i'm super hyped for the new album and can't wait to see the full picture they're painting with it.

Synyster Gates should make a solo album, that would be incredible
Having really similar thoughts. Its also nice to see how The Stage was leaning a bit towards this vibe. Makes sense as a 'bridge' album
A7x is my faveorite band of all time, and I’m a hardcore metal head at 15. My personal opinion on the single is that it’s new, but in the direction they were heading with the stage. What stops me from being completely into it like city of evil, self titled, or waking the fallen is that you can’t relate to anything being spoken. The biggest contributor in good music stems from a mixture of every instrument and with badass guitar work has to come lyrics the people listening can feel. I’m not saying his voice has gotten worse, I actually like the way matt made it sound for this single. But my point is, this sounds more like a game track or a movie sound track with lyrics one cannot relate to which is what stops me from putting it top 10 or even top 15

Absolutely love this song, it 1000% lived up to my expectations and then some, great song coming off of one of their best albums
To me, the interpretation of the music video is this: A man is depressed in the world and body he lives in. So his soul travels around the earth and through history to find peace and joy. He realizes that the world is full of death and destruction and so meets the devil who then tells him he will take the man's soul to a eutopic paradise. The man agrees and lets the devil take him to this eutopic paradise in a different world. When the man arrives he realizes that this "perfect place" is actually an artificially created hell where no one else exists and everything is fake (because a perfect artificial eutopic world does not actually exists). And so the mans soul runs to the edge of this hell and jumps off into the space time continuum to then rejoin his body. The moral of the story is to be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. Be careful searching for paradise because what you think is paradise might actually be hell in the end.
The effects on the guitars kinda reminds me of "Planet Zero" by Shinedown.

I love the experimentation. More of that please. But, the biggest issue I had with The Stage, and the reason I don't listen to it very often, is because of the mix. The drums throughout that album always felt like the were recorded and mixed and mastered completely separately from the rest of the band (which may have been true since the album came out mere months after Wakermann was brought in). However, this song had a different problem in the mix. It just felt...off... I like the song, I like the feel and growth throughout and the exceptionally progressive moments. I'm excited for the whole album, but this really just doesn't feel like a lead single, and I agree with you, it doesn't feel "complete"
The Bradley Hall impression at the start of the video was great. 😀👍
Doesnt the beginning sound like the beginning of rush's tom Sawyer???
One interesting thing I saw in an interview was they aren't using any samples for the album. I personally find it super refreshing in a very stale genre.
This song definitely caught me off guard when I first heard it during the livestream. But as many people seem to be saying, it grows on you, it’s a good first single and it makes me excited for what’s to come!! Also, could we assume they’re doing this to purposely throw us off? The whole marketing for this release seemed very “mysterious” and trying to mislead us
@eduardohenriquecarneiroalv6343
Жыл бұрын
It's definately to throw us off. There is a thing in marketing where it's more worth making something divisive than outwright loved because being divisive invokes both love and hate, and hate, at least in marketing, is a much stronger emotion than love. Hate gets people talking. Them releasing a more "different" sounding single makes much more sense nowadays than releasing their biggest banger because it gets people talking and debating and listening again and again. Their marketing team alredy did an amazing job with the "hacker" and the puzzles and I'm betting they know exactly what they're doing by releasing Nobody as a single. Oh and one last thing, the album description says that it is better consumed as if it's like a continuous journey, which kinda makes sense for the end o Nobody where it doesn't seem like the song is fully over, but it's a part of something bigger.
To my knowledge the album is supposed to be a concept album tackling existentialism, and I’d like to think the production and structure choices they took with this song are meant to lend in to that. That being said this song seems like a track on the back end of an album that would bring the meaning more heavily to this track. I could be talking completely out my ass, but that’s what it feels like to me. Definitely didn’t sell out though
I think my main problem is the production. For what ever reason I can’t behind just the way it sounds in certain parts. Maybe I’m just not used to it but it does feel like a demo still. I still really like the songwriting and style of these singles so far tho I doubt this will be an at all casual listen for most people but I think it’ll be a really cool album to come to every so often.
The trap sample for the hi-hat fits with the general theme of the album; ie artificiality vs genuine.

His vocals were always the band's biggest weakness, but it still slaps
Avenged Sevenfold always changes their sound in some way and that is why I have them as my favorite band. Want A7X sound but more thrash? City of Evil. Want more proggy stuff? Go with their newer albums. Want good ol rock? Self-titled or Nightmare. Want the basic old school sound? Hail to the King. If anything, the fact that they keep changing shows they never sold out.

What would have fit great is some delay guitar solo to feel the space thing, but the solo is very good and I honestly like the song. I agree that the vocals should have been mixed more on the front. Good review.
Does anybody know what happened to Matt's voice? Did something happened to him that I'm not aware of? I really like A7X, have done so for maybe ten years, so imagine my suprise when I listened to the vocals on this track.

He's had quite a few issues with his voice before. He had to have vocal surgery before City of Evil and then again in 2018.

@@edgarvelasco1302 Yeah man did a number on himself in the early days, he was using improper techniques for his old Metalcore screams. You're supposed to scream from your chest, he was screaming from his throat.

@@edgarvelasco1302 Also just to be fair, he's in his 40's now. Age changes your voice.
A7X is one of my favorite bands! I heard this song once today.... and im not in love with it. I'm Still very excited for the new album.
It's so weird that anything hip hop is called selling out. When I was younger, I hated hip hop and rap, but as I grew older, my taste of music expended. Though to be fair, I can't listen to a song that is all screamo anymore. I don't know why, but it makes me feel old. It's like too much noise. I don't think because a type of music is popular, it means that is bad or is just selling out.

the song is interesting...I don't like the vocal performance and I think there is a hint of having to get used to the change in their sound which I do struggle with at times. However cool change because electronic elements in metal are pretty cool when done right
