The first few times I thought the same about his voice. But after countless listens and reading the lyrics the last few days, it seems like a conscious, artistic choice to express the feeling of struggle, anxiety and heavy emotions at the cost of sounding ’perfect’

I feel the same exact way. The same thing happens in Classical and Opera - the vocalist will vocally act out the character they’re playing. I think that when the full album is out, we’ll hear M. Shadows personify whatever each song is about, rather than sounding the same throughout each track. I’m so hyped for June.

“Avenged Sevenfold's new album, Life Is But A Dream, is best served as a whole and consumed en masse to truly appreciate its musical breadth and sonic depth. Written and recorded over the span of 4 years, it was produced by Joe Barresi and Avenged Sevenfold in Los Angeles and mixed by Andy Wallace in the Poconos, PA. The album is a journey through an existential crisis; a very personal exploration into the meaning, purpose and value of human existence with the anxiety of death always looming.” -A7X Inspiration - Albert Camus

Thank you for the explanation. The whole album should be an interesting listen. I agree with much of their assessment of the song. I heard it a few days before this reaction. I don’t love it, don’t hate it. I was so pumped at the beginning riff intro. I thought we were going to get heavy! It kind of kept me in one place. I know bands progress and change their style. Opeth is a prime example. And I love all of their products. That said I can’t wait for the full album. I do like when artists change and progress. You can’t keep doing the same thing unless you’re Metallica or AC/DC. Lame

A7x have been very vocal lately about being bored with traditional songwriting. They are one of the few metal bands that can sell out Madison Square Garden (which they are doing this year), so they understand what sells and what brings radio play. They realize that traditional songwriting that generally sounds good is incredibly boring to listen to and incredibly boring to create, and they're one of the few bands to experiment and try wickedly out of the box ideas. The theme of this song is understanding the absurdity of life itself, how ridiculous the entire world is in general, and how nothing truly matters or is that important anyway. In that regard, they do a lot of "why not?" and "what if?" in this song. What if the solo just cuts off? What if there's a metal song that doesn't rely on powerchords and chugging like every other song? What if there isn't a standout riff? What if there isn't a huge buildup to the solo? All of these things have been done to death, and A7X looked at how a song could be written without all the cliche writing points. You guys generally only listened to their commercial stuff and haven't touched their real wicked stuff from their early days (ALPOH, Sidewinder, Wicked End, Trashed and Scattered, Betrayed). Love them or hate them, they are greatest metal band since the 80s in my opinion. Also, the lead singer M. Shadows described this song as, "It's an uneasy ride filled w anxiety and weight. Not an everyday 'banger'. More like a panic attack.💀"

M. Shadows has done some absolutely INCREDIBLE work on his voice & his technique. He’s had continuous issues with polyps on his vocal cords, between his vocal fry’s & touring stress, he could have shredded his vocal cords. He’s come back with proper technique for his style, protecting his voice above everything else. I’ve been a fan of theirs since “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet” from 2001. I am SO thankful that Shadows has been working on his voice, he’s one of a kind, and I’ll take less “force” if it means we can hear him sing for another 30+ years Talking about his singing on THIS track, it’s all about the vibe of the song. He’s talking about the continuous cycle of life & death, that’s the theme of the new album. A7X put on some of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Studio quality vocals & instruments at a live concert is absolutely insane. They create their albums with their tours in mind, they have for years. It’s all about showmanship with these guys, the BEST way to experience A7X is live, zero question. Their choices on the album always makes sense after hitting up the tour.
Very different sound. Never heard anything like this. Very Unique. I dig it lol

@@dougo2641 Both of those songs occupy the 2 most quintessential A7X songs. Buried Alive is the best single example of what A7X is. It's like their thesis paper, and Little Piece of Heaven is the totally absurd ridiculous, but extremely creative part of them that is what puts them in the upper echelon. It also puts in perspective their inherently "don't take themselves too seriously" attitude, while simultaneously being maybe one of the most talented bands with some of the best musicians alive today, and no longer, in the case of the Rev.

I’ve gotta say, the more I listen to it, the more I think the sound of his voice was an artistic choice more than it was necessitated by his previous operations. Obviously they’d play a factor, and it’s convenient to make an artistic decision that lessens the vocal strain if you’ve previously damaged your voice, but the vocal style fits the overall arrangement and thematic direction of the song too well. Plus, his voice does grow in strength as the song continues. I reckon that he’ll adapt his vocal style to fit the messaging of each song on the album- wishful thinking perhaps, but only time will tell.
I think that's the first song from that band that I really love 😂 we're all different but his voice sounds very emotional and epic as the same time to me!
Regarding M Shadows' struggle, the whole song feels like it conveys a struggle, so it kinda fits. We'll see how future tracks come out.
He's had vocal issues but I think what you're hearing is results of vocal coaching less nasally. At the end when he really sings out to me at least I can tell he's still got it
This song was written after their vocalist and guitar player Brian went on a DMT trip. If you have never taken DMT its one hell of an experience. I had a buddy of mine right when i got out of the Army take me on a DMT trip and the lyrics are pretty spot on to what i experienced after not having done any type of substances ever other than smoking weed in high school once. I left my body behind and was everything, then i was nothing, then the whole universe collapsed around me and I was a god of the universe then it was over. lasted id say maybe 15 minutes tops but for me it felt like it went on for much much longer. I for sure will never do it again but it was once hell of an experience if you can be in a good headspace when you do it. Make sure you have a really good understanding friend nearby incase shit goes south.
If you want a song that will get you over that hump to make Avenged Sevenfold a playlist band, check out the song Save Me. That's like the crème de la crème for them. Also you're right, the vocalist has never sounded like this. I don't think his voice it shot but it seems like he's trying to sound more like Ozzy. Personally I'm not sure if it fits the song. Also since you're reacting to new songs, you gotta get back to Periphery and check out their new song Wildfire. It's been years since you've reacted to them and they just put out an album last week that's getting a lot of hype.
That portion of the song with dual vocals was intended to sound like he was fighting himself.
Your first impression is what I believe most people have. With more listens...damn, this ones a "grower"
Matt blew his voice out like 15-20 years ago, had surgery, had to wait to record and perform, and has had that upper range limit since probably back then. His whole voice and tone sounds just deeper on this track, I noticed it immediately. To really get avenged sevenfold you have to go back to the waking the fallen and city of evil albums. They’re one of those bands best heard from the beginning.
I've never been a huge fan of A7X; BUT, I absolutely love, and respect, this song tremendously. 🤘🏻
Agreed with the vocals, his voice has slowly aged over time. Their 2007 self-titled and 2010 Nightmare are his best vocal performances to me 👌
I hope they google a7x and see what the lead singer had to go through with his vocal chords. its a miracle we are getting his voice at all. and I think like hail to the king it was deliberately sung this way. and you cannot listen to this song on bad headphones. i used a great set and everything was perfect on those.

this is definitely more of a "mood" than a bop, banger or vibe... I really liked it right away simply because it was so unique...very "PROG"
I genuinely and wholeheartedly think this is the best song they've ever written, bar maybe Buried Alive. The composition, the mechanisms they used to accomplish their artistic goals is astounding. The lyrics are their own thing, but the concept of a man considering his world and finding it all to be fake and hollow (like the skeleton in the video) mixed with the synth guitar/classical elements gives me such a melancholy mix of longing for the past (strings/cello) and hope/angst for the future (synth guitar and chaotic structure of the song). Outstanding work by A7x and I cant wait to hear the whole album

It’s a tricky one. For me personally the first time I heard it I was like ehhh it’s not very ‘singlely’. But it’s a small piece of a larger whole which is going to be a concept album, based off existentialism. The more I listened to the song, the more I like it. It was a very ballsy move to release this song first, but it makes me think that the album is going to be incredible if this the most ‘single’ like song. As for the video, I believe the character has committed suicide and has seen the afterlife. He arrives at heaven but it’s just the general religious heaven that Christianity has conjured up. Fake - the barcodes. He then returns back, looks at the suicide note and goes back to being alive. I think you guys would prefer buried alive and not ready to die. Buried Alive and Not Ready to Die are two of my favorite songs by A7X
Their best song to bring anyone is is definitely blinded in chains. This song is great to listen to after that one actually. Feels almost an unintentional before & after. Blinded in chains is strait forward. This song has a "low point during enlightenment" feel to it. If you could imagine that. Very much looking forward to the rest of the album.
The solo is WAY past mind blowing. So precisely and beautifully executed.
what i like about their new music is how purposeful everything is to serve the story. Like the song from the beginning sounds like a purge then as things progress its starts to get out of hand like with technology type thing. So that layering i think represents the unevenness well in the story then wanting to transcend passed that as it does in the two transitions after those layered parts
In 2018 Avenged Sevenfold had to cancel their entire head lining world tour because vocalist M.Shadows had basically shredded his vocal chords, and required surgery. His recovery, along with the pandemic is why they have released new music until this came out. But yes, his voice probably won't be what it used to be, but still sounds better than I could ever dream of sounding like lol...this song gets better & better with more listens, it's a grower. I don't think the band cares about radio play, just making incredible music that tests their and the fans boundaries and expands it. I waited what seems like foREVer for new music from them, and I am not disappointed
I honestly just love how a7x can makes songs that people can interpret many different ways but yet still have the song meaning only one thing. It’s a form of art that not much people can do and the experimentation of this songs really leads me to want to listen to the rest of the album so I’m super excited.

You're never gonna get over the hump by listening to their "singles"
100% agree with y'all. The start of this song was so hard. I was ready for some Nightmare or Shepherd of Fire type type feel.
The vocals, the sound, the mix and the overlaying of the instruments and vocals at times, eveb the lyrics and the video, all represent in one way or another and existential crisis. I think that all was put together consciously; and if not, the chance made a beautiful peace of art that communicates the same message all the ways you hear it or see it.
His vocals definitely sound different but its because the way the album is mixed. It's done this way deliberately, i guess its the sound they wanted as opposed to very layered, perfect sounding vocals. I noticed it on The stage sometimes as well.
This song was made for ME. And it is PURE GENIUS!!!
I have a feeling that this album will be one of those albums that you will have to listen to all of it to appreciate each and every choice made by the band . I've heard whispers of shades of pink floyd the wall not so much sound but structural influence, so far I'm digging it along with the latest song released. Something really different good for them. At this stage it's easy churning out typical A7X songs with their talent but they have higher goal in mind before they're done as this and the stage both have shown. Can't wait to hear the whole album

Took me a few listens but this is a bad ass track. It's not a normal "single". Very different song. I love the main groove. The singing I think it a style choice. Sometimes techniques have to change. Sinister Gatez really mopped up the ending. Beautifully well done
This song takes a few listens to grasps just like they said everything is planed. His voice is intentionally panicked and struggling that’s the entire theme of the song. The effects and guitar and drums and everything match that. And the part that seems like to much is going on is also intentional it’s suppose to make you feel that way. Panicked and confused. If you try and find resolution in it the more it doesn’t make sense. Just let it flow through you and feel what the artist is trying to get you to feel. And the guitar solo is absolutely amazing. His choice of notes are amazing. And even in the solo he picked some “wrong” notes on purpose and then resolved them. And I’m glad y’all caught the drum and guitar back and forth at the end. I have listened to this song on repeat the last few days. I can’t stop lol. I’m so excited for this album
I applaud you guys for being the first reviewers to call a spade a spade. Shadows just doesn't have what he used to - simple as that, and this song is a glaring example of it. From the very first vocal line in the song, he's just not hitting it like it used to.

@@ninja_tonyI love the new direction they're going in but what I don't understand is that Rock and metal fans say that they hate mainstream music but when a band or artist gets away from the formula that made them big, they get upset and label them sellouts. Do they hate mainstream music or not? People are always complaining that mainstream artists never do anything different but always complain when rock and metal artists do something different.
Sure. It sounds a little artsy and a little proggy, but that’s how good of musicians they are. They are a combination of the heaviest metal with the most technically sound skill set. I second this and add: “Endless”. My favorite song by them by a landslide.
I feel like if you want an actual feel for Avenged, you have to listen to each album as a whole from start to finish. They're a journey. When you just pick a song here and a song there, you're not getting the experience. Matt, the singer, has had vocal surgery twice, the last time being 2018. His voice is never going to be the same, but it still hits. I'm so excited for this album and super happy they didn't decide to shelf it like Matt said part of him wanted to do. The track listing alone tells me it's going to be good.
Be mindful that Nightmare was 13 years ago. The singer (Matt) is in his 40s now. Voices change so much over time especially after years of harsh vocals like he does
first!!!! i had to be first when i seen avenged and lost in vegas🦍🤝🏽🫡
Certainly got a similar feel as 'The Stage' the vocals are different but they really work for the song. Will see what the album brings...
I’ve been following you guys since your Master of Puppets reaction and always love seeing your takes on a wide variety of metal bands metal subgenres! George is right about Matt’s voice. One of the reasons that they’ve taken 7 years to release a new album is that he has had I believe 3 or so vocal surgeries about blowing out his voice some years back, hence why his voice doesn’t sound as sharp anymore. This style has definitely grown on me since it was released and hopefully this signifies a healthier style of singing for him here on out. It almost reminds of how James Hetfield blew out his voice in the mid 90s hence why he sounds very different on the post-black album albums.
Y'all haven't even begun to scratch the surface of avenged sevenfold!
The meaning is that the grass is not always greener on the other side. He was discontent with life, went outside to notice only on the negative, wars, killings and so on. He made a deal with the death in selling his soul for the reaper to take him to a better place. That better place was “new”” perfect” so he noticed it was all fake so he was angry. He walk endlessly until he found the edge and jumped off the ledge. As he fell he remembered the journey that took him to that place but in the end he ended up in his body again.
I'm going to laugh my ass off if the album has a song with an incredible vocal performance by Matt. His voice sounds different here, but seems intentional more than anything. Just reminds me of how someone like Mike Patton changes their voice to get a particular style for a somg
It grows on you for sure and I would say the vocals are weathered in a good way. It has been 13 years since nightmare, vocals change…
Yeah he's had 3 vocal surgeries since the last album. Definitely not the same anymore

@Ronnie Schroeder developed a blister on his vocal cords. Years of screaming and singing the way he has, has taken its toll. He can't do it as violently anymore. Needs to be more controlled

I think it makes his singing voice even more interesting & it’s sorta even Chris Cornellish 🤘🏻🖤

@kikiguerrero89 I mean one of the biggest criticisms of nobody is his voice. So I'm not sure where I'm wrong
While M. Shadows did have a blood blister that caused him to take some significant time to heal his voice, I don't believe his voice is blown out. I believe this was a stylistic choice for the song to add to the feeling and emotion. There are points in the song where you can tell he can hit notes at a good range. Like when he sings "I am the sun" and a few parts in the bridge/final verse. Avenged Sevenfold set out to make something entirely different this album, stating they were experimenting with several techniques foreign to them.. such as putting hip hop-esque samples in their songs, like this one. Definitely a grower song as well, I liked it my first listen but I have it on repeat like all day now. Hope y'all react to the album in June!
I'm was so high when I heard this song and it tripped me out so bad. I was standing infront of my open refrigerator with my phone blaring this at full volume, it was literally hypnotizing me. The first guitar was sucking me into the phone
I've been a fan since Nightmare. This is a weird song, and I wasn't sure about it at first, but it's grown on me a lot. I haven't been this excited for a new album in years.
14:01 I don't think you could've put it better, I've listen to this song a few times now and I have found there are many different ways to interpret it. I believe, In my opinion that you nailed it here! I also was apprehensive when I had first listen to this, it was different and strange haha but I find myself coming back to the song and just loving it. The more and more I listen to it, the more I appreciate it. Very much the same when I had listen to the stage album.
U can tell he’s holding back his vocals he can the same note like in the stage
Here are some avenged sevenfold songs you would love and should listen to. Save me, buried alive, exist, Remenissions, eternal rest, radiant eclipse, critical acclaim, scream, brompton cocktail, a little piece of heavan, beast and the harlot. Listen to any of these songs please, especially the first few I guarantee you will love them.
Good shit. What made 60’s 70’s legendary.
To me, the interpretation of the music video is this: A man is depressed in the world and body he lives in. So his soul travels around the earth and through history to find peace and joy. He realizes that the world is full of death and destruction and so meets the devil who then tells him he will take the man's soul to a eutopic paradise. The man agrees and lets the devil take him to this eutopic paradise in a different world. When the man arrives he realizes that this "perfect place" is actually an artificially created hell where no one else exists and everything is fake (because a perfect artificial eutopic world does not actually exists). And so the mans soul runs to the edge of this hell and jumps off into the space time continuum to then rejoin his body. The moral of the story is to be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. Be careful searching for paradise because what you think is paradise might actually be hell in the end.
Avenged is one of those bands that is becoming a bit more progressive/experimental with their sound. They used to write their music for radio play but I think they are more focused on the critical listener at this point in their writing, and I think The Stage started it. I'm all for the sound though, I've feel like I've grown with this band over the years.
Shoutout to Brook Wackerman for a nasty drum part (you guys may know him from Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves/Bad Religion). He's done a great job holding up the legacy of The Rev and what Mike Portnoy did for them. The song is a little disjointed, it almost feels like Nickelback and Dream Theater with a little Faith No More. Had some good parts. It's interesting at least.
At first I was thought this song was pretty basic for Avenged Sevenfold. After listening to it numerous times, I've really come to appreciate this song a lot. Going to see them in October. I can't wait
Super fast cymbals instead of bass drums is so brilliant.. First listen I gave it a 5. Now it is a 9.98
Vocals are like this with the whole album on purpose. He did have surgery on his vocal cords, but he is healthy and sounding live better than ever.
It's so we'll constructed and I love the sonic choices.
I've never been a huge A7X fan, always just thought they were ok, until this song. I don't know what it is about it, but between the sound and the lyrics it makes me feel immortal?! 🤣
