As someone who has only used disposable orange earplugs, I appreciate that you described all of the relevant options and what really shines as the best options. You also took the effort to emphasize how easy it is to get a mold and I hope to one day get a fitted filter ear plug

As always.....a great video. Has all the information for someone to make an informed decision on which product works for them. I have the SoundGear not the phantoms. Like them a bunch. I wear hearing aids because I do have hearing loss. So wearing my SoundGear gives me the ability to hear what is going on around me at the range. Saftey first! As always, looking forward to what is next!

Love the video! Just disappointed you didn’t cover the silicone style ear plugs! I wear the safari land silicone ear pieces with passive filter and wanted to get a review on that style also.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I agree, those would have been a great thing to include but didn’t have any personal experience with them. I’ve looked up the Safariland plugs with the filters that you mentioned and they look like they’d be excellent! They have a NRR of 33 dB. Very similar to the custom plugs with filters, with the only difference being that the fit may not be exactly right for some people. Overall, though, great choice. I’d have absolutely no concerns about using them to protect my own hearing

Great piece.. very helpful. I’ve been using SoundGear product for a number of years. Well worth the price. However, those batteries are a real PITA.. I’m going to look into the rechargeable model.

Interesting video. 2 things, 1. I’m currently looking into are quality glasses and hearing pro and both combined are the cost of low end guns 🥲 and 2. Do a funny “What to do and not do” sporting clay etiquette video. Competitive shooter myself (met Jeremy at the NC State Championship this past weekend) I’ve seen the angry, the rude, and the careless. Would be a funny topic to cover for any level of shooter. Just an idea.

Here's a question for you, or maybe it's a bit of something supplemental you could cover on this topic: Within what distance of people shooting do you want to make sure you have hearing protection in your ears? My father was a physician and would shout at me as a kid for not having ear plugs in unless I was either on the line shooting (trap and skeet) or probably within 30 yards of others shooting; but I was a dumb, rebellious kid then and now wear my ear protection almost at all times (especially with the advent of the electronic models), like he used to and wanted me to. However, I notice many, many people don't wear anything unless they are essentially actively shooting. Would love your thoughts on this.

Great video gents. I have had an interesting journey with ear protection. Ive worked with an audiologist a few times but cant find a custom fit plug that seals in my ear when I mount the gun and when im just standing about. It seems that the way I mount changes the shape of my ear canal too much, so ive had to go back to the foam plugs.

One further question I have. Great video by the way, very informative. Hence my question. I was informed that unless you are using a full ear muff, like the Walker's or Peltor's, that cover the whole ear, you'll still receive damaging vibrations and noise to the ear bones. Because the ear muff covers that back of the external ear and along the head. This point was not brought up on this particular video. But I'd like to know if this is the case? I have switched back to Walker ear muffs from the shot cancelling ear plugs for this reason. My shot cancelling ear plugs are designed by company's that specialize in shooting ear protection so I know I'm getting a good sound cancelling with the ear buds. But this question of the ear bones along the back of the ear is my concern and the damage that could result because of using an Ear bud/plug. Can you please assist?

Why did you not include AXIL and other brands that are readily available off Amazon?

I believe at the time the point we were trying to get across was there are different categories ear protection that functionally work and those that didn't as Apple ipods were not designed for ear protection and that noise canceling is not protection. All of the other brands out there designed for ear protection would fall into simple categories that are either plugs, filtered plugs, or electronic assisted. Then either fitted or non-fitted. What specific brand a person goes with is subjective to personal preference, value that people put on their hearing, economic feasibility etc. Plenty of quality options out there, some better than others but all have pros & cons. Educating folks on hearing protection was the main goal. I'm personally happy with .50cent foamies or $1600 Electronics. But I prefer the electronics for ease of use when interacting with people all the time. Hope that helps.

Can anyone share actual lab data that shows why air pods are not acceptable for shooting? A friend says "I feel like they work" and I bludgeoned him for having no supporting data, so sharing a video that says "we feel like they don't work" isn't going to help us out.

@@claylabusahow old is this though? The Apple AirPods Pro specifically has a different type of seal and noise cancelling to older style headphones. Research would need to have been conducted at least in the last five years

When they say “we feel” they are drs and their opinion is that of a professional nature. They gave plenty of explanation why in the first 15 minutes. Shooting sound is quick and the noise cancellation will not react properly to cancel out the loud sound whereas with regular/constant sound, noise cancellation can properly work.

The hardest thing to get used to for me with the phantoms was being able to hear the pellets hit the ground/vegetation after the shot.

Similar to the comment above I am curious what you think of the Xcore and ISOtunes with the foam plugs.

Definitely have active noise cancellation off. I have been using my galaxy buds pro when skeet shooting with no issues. Although, I wouldn't recommend using these for pistol or rifle shooting.

Safe enough, absolutely. Foamies are truly safe enough, so im assuming the idea is to be able to communicate better at the range, filtered earplugs are better, than electronic hearing protection provides better benefits than that. Safety is key but truly all we are doing when spending more money on ear protection is buying more capability in communication and how many times we don't have to remove our ear protection in environments where it could be harmful to enjoy communicating with others. All safe, which ones best is just how much ease of communication matters to you. Regardless of the brand. Hope that helps!

What I wasn’t clear on is what is better in the electronic buds compared to the one with filter. The filtered one has no batteries and cheaper, why go the electronic route?

I always wonder if people have wax build up from using in ear protection. A few years ago I would use the foamy ones and eventual I had hardened wax. The ENT (yes I can’t spell the other word) wouldn’t remove it until I softened it because he was worried it was stuck to my ear drum. Anyway that’s when I switched to over the ear which are fine for pistol but I want to get back to in the ear. Oh side note I wore them not only for shooting but my job so it was a lot of time with them in my ear. I just worry that switching back to in the ear will result in the wax build up.

Swimmers silicone formable ear plugs you buy at the drug store for me is the best at sealing up in your ears and stopping all harmful noise and inexpensive

I think another factor that makes AirPods unsuitable is the fact that unless the AirPods can make a sound in your ear as loud as a gunshot, there is no way for the noise cancellation to make a negative waveform of large enough magnitude to cancel out the incoming wave.
