Arctic Hare

Hi Everyone.
Wildlife All About lets you explore and provides Information about different types of animals. It helps you to learn more about the greatest species of animals.
Today we are going to learn more about the The arctic hare or polar rabbit. The Arctic hare
is a species of hare which is adapted largely to polar and mountainous habitats. The arctic hare survives with a thick coat of fur and usually digs holes in the ground or under snow to keep warm and sleep. Arctic hares look like rabbits but have shorter ears, are taller when standing, and, unlike rabbits, can thrive in cold climates.

    Alaska is home to the snowshoe hare (L. Americanus) and the aptly named Alaska hare (L. othus). The arctic hare (L. arctus) inhabits the northernmost reaches of eastern Canada, as well as Newfoundland and Greenland. An arctic hare is much more likely to make a come-from-away kiss a cod than it is to speculate on the outcome of the next Iditarod.

    Can you explain the last sentence? Also thank you for stating all three types of snow bunny. When looking it up a year or two ago I only found the arctic hare, and a short statement referring to "other [arctic] lagomorphs", as well as a hundred plus dictionary definitions equating to 'ski slut', definitely not helpful.

  • @AtarahDerek

    @AtarahDerek

    @@castonyoung7514 A come-from-away is a visitor to Newfoundland. They have a ceremony in Newfoundland to make visitors honorary Newfoundlanders. The ceremony involves kissing a cod. So if we're anthropomorphizing hares and talking about which ones would be involved in the Iditarod, it wouldn't be the arctic hare, since the arctic hare isn't found in Alaska. But the arctic hare is found in Newfoundland.

    Except that Arctic Hares (Lepus arcticus) aren't found in Alaska. The only hares native to Alaska are the Alaskan Hare (Lepus othus) and the Snowshoe Hare (Lepus timidus). They're cousins, though. So whatever. (Also, Antelope Jackrabbits are just as big as Arctic Hares, as are Alaskan Hares.) Kind of a hare freak, am I.
