ArcMap vs ArcGIS Pro - Comparing these two GIS applications from Esri

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Now is a confusing time for both new and existing ArcGIS users. Esri is in the process of transitioning from the time proven ArcMap application to the new ArcGIS Pro. So existing users are wondering when they should transition and new users are trying to figure which they should learn. Hopefully this video will help you understand the differences between these two desktop GIS application and answer some of your questions.

    Glad you enjoyed the video. I have done a newer one comparing ArcGIS Pro 2.6 and ArcMap 10.8.1 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/gHl13KaPh5mpo7Q.html. ArcGIS Pro has continued to improve with each version. I now rarely use ArcMap. The only time I really use ArcMap is when I need to support a client that has not migrated yet.

    I've learned just enough ArcGIS Desktop for two years purchased by an organization I consult for to be a little dangerous but am currently looking to purchase my own license to use on an upgraded computer of my own. Looking at the products on ESRI's website I was a little confused on the differences between Pro and Desktop and what it all means. Your video cleared everything up and I'm excited to get started by purchasing Pro and diving into it fully. I'm not too entrenched in Desktop so that the change will kill me. Thank you so much for this great explanation and breakdown of the differences and informing me that Pro is what ESRI is looking to transition to permanently. You've gained a subscriber that needs help from any and all GIS experts he can get!

    Great video easy to follow, I personally think geocoding or more importantly rematching is much easier and better in Arc Map. In Arc Map, you can sort the records and you can pick a point on the map if you know the xy coordinates but its not in your network dataset. Rematching is more limited in Arc Pro.

    I know they have been working on the geocoding process. Hopefully, future releases will continue to improve. Geocoding is always a pain thanks to incomplete, non-uniform formatting or just bad data. Not having all the tools only makes it a bigger night mare.

    In my experience, I think ArcGIS Pro is better than QGIS, but QGIS (especially current versions) is probably better and more user-friendly than ArcMap. But many people and organizations still use ArcMap and people look down on QGIS as inferior FOSS, while preferring to go with the prestigious ArcGIS brand, even if it means using the older ArcMap

    I understand where you are coming from. However there are still a lot of organization that are still using ArcMap and that will not migrate until they have no other choice. So those skills are still in demand. Secondly, it does take a lot of time to update course materials and since ArcGIS Pro is still being updated and tweaked frequently that complicates it even more. So I would say be a bit understanding for our colleagues in academia

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the very kind words. So happy you found the video helpful. Esri is working hard to drop all support for personal Geodatabases. First they did so in Server and ArcGIS Online. Now they have done it with ArcGIS Pro. To the best of my knowledge ArcGIS Pro does not now nor will it ever support personal geodatabases. You are encouraged to migrate any personal geodatabases to a file geodatabase. File Geodatabases, Workgroup Geodatabases and Enterprise geodatabases all support relationship classes. ArcGIS Pro also does support SQLite. Here is a link about that - pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/help/data/databases/work-with-sqlite-databases-in-arcgis-pro.htm.

We're using 10-20+ years old software and to be honest, I'm worried about compability problems in 5-10 years in the future. This will become a total nightmare for IT Admins.

  • @eGISAssociates

    @eGISAssociates

    Yes that is a very real concern. Not to mention that support for most of those versions has been dropped. So no more bug or security fixes. Heck Land Development Desktop and ArcView are not even an active products anymore. On the good side, if you are accustom to using the old ArcView GIS application, ArcGIS Pro should be pretty easy for you to pick up. In my opinion ArcGIS Pro is what ArcView would have become if it had remained an active product.

  • @eGISAssociates

    @eGISAssociates

    No, it doesn't because the cost can be variable depending on the options you select. For example, if I publish a map to ArcGIS Online the cost if I make it dynamic versus tiled will be different. Even if I make it a tiled map the cost will differ depending on where I create the tiles, ArcGIS Online or on my own computer and then upload them. Hope that makes sense.

    I understand how multiple maps and multiple layouts per project can be useful from the perspective of a single user. However, I work in a large organization that often has many people working on a given project (engineering project, not Pro Project, sheesh, bad nomenclature). I'm unclear on what would happen if, say an engineering project had 20 or so maps in a Pro Project and they all needed to be updated in a short period of time. Could multiple users access the Pro Project to perform the work? With the ArcMap approach of one mxd for one map it was easy to divvy up work among multiple people. Could you explain a good approach to distributed work using Pro?

    ArcGIS Pro with the 3D Analyst extension will export 3D data to a lot of different formats. If your data is a multipatch, then it should export directly to an AutoCAD DWG which can be opened in plain AutoCAD or Civil 3D. So I would start with ArcGIS Pro and the 3D analyst extension.

    I honestly cannot understand why anyone who ever worked ribbon-free, would love ribbons. First we got those Ribbons in AutoCad, and the first thing most of experienced AutoCadists do, is getting rid of them ribbons and their so-called "intuitive" approach (along with the measurable performance draw). Next, we got Ribbons in Office, and for most of our time we were searching for all our once easily found functions, so we ordered a "classic menu" plug-in in order to keep our workflow flowing. And yes, a Ribbon means graphically hunting through (simply different than before) ordered functions. What I will do first in ArcMap Pro is to try to get rid of the Ribbon, if that's possible. I have work to do and my least priority is to inhale and adopt new and poorly tested workflows dictated by the software. Remember that ArcMap is a software which functional workflow was once dictated by the tasks it were expected to fulfill. Also, I doubt that ArcMap only supports 4GB. I did not follow the complete video, but I saw that Pro eliminates ArcScene and ArcGlobe. But does it eliminate 3d Analyst, which is feeding ArcScene & Arcglobe with data through its tools ?

  • @eGISAssociates

    @eGISAssociates

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your comments. I have used AutoCAD since R12 and ArcGIS since it was first released. So I have worked ribbon free. Personally, I am good either way as long as I know the environment. Having said that, you can customize the ArcGIS Pro interface. Not sure you can turn off the ribbon but maybe you can make adjustments that make it work better for you. I can say new users do find the new ribbon much easier to navigate compared to the lost in toolbars of the older ArcMap. As the question about the Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions, they are still there. However ArcGIS Pro does not require them to work in 3D. That means you can edit and view data in 3D natively. If you want to perform 3D analysis you still need the extension. But with the extension, you can still work directly in ArcGIS Pro. No need to have yet another application. Also because ArcMap is a 32 bit application, it will only recognize 4 GB of RAM. That is a limit for all 32 bit applications. If you install the 64 bit geoprocessing patch, some geoprocessing tools will be able to use more than 4 GB of RAM.

    ARC map, you can use, driven data pages, to make many lay out . in a single project. what is the different. The onlu different is that asr scene and arcmap are in the same app.

  • @eGISAssociates

    @eGISAssociates

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment. Data driven pages does allow you to print multiple page map books from a single MXD but that is not the same as having multiple independent layouts. With data driven pages, the layout must be the same size and orientation for each page and the location of elements is fixed. ArcGIS Pro allows you to create as many independent layouts as you want in a single project very similar to the way ArcView GIS did if you go back that far. Each layout in ArcGIS Pro has its own size, orientation and unique elements. ArcGIS Pro also support data driven page functionality but it is called map series. Hopefully this helps explain the difference between layouts in ArcMap and the multiple layout capability of ArcGIS Pro. Thanks again for your comment.

    Sure thing. ArcView actually can refer to two things. The first was Esri's first real Windows application, ArcView GIS. It was first released in 1991 and was discontinued with the release of ArcGIS in 2002 at version 3.3. When Esri released ArcMap, ArcView was one of the license levels. It was equivalent to the Basic license level we have now. When ArcMap, part of ArcGIS Desktop, was first released the three license levels were ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. At version 10.0 Esri renamed those license levels to Basic, Standard, and Advanced.

I still use it occasionally with old avenue scripts. I tried converting them to modelbuilder and the new scripts kept getting broken by updates to ArcGIS Desktop, so its actually easier to keep using the old avenue scripts. You can't install 3.3 on a windows 10 computer, but if you had it installed on an xp or earlier machine you can copy the files over or to a usb stick and the program will run.

    My project had to switch to ArcGIS pro, because ArcGIS desktop is not compatible with C2PC. Unfortunately this change has made it nearly impossible to publish a map to a map server, and their instructions are very difficult to follow :/

    So what map server are you trying to publish too? Is it ArcGIS Server or something else. ArcGIS Pro does now allow you to publish content to ArcGIS server. First you need to establish a publisher or admin connection to the ArcGIS Server. Once you have done that, then you right click on the server connection in the Catalog pane and select publish. This will launch a wizard that is similar to the one in ArcMap. The primary difference is you first must select the map in the ArcGIS Pro project you wish to publish to the server.

    I assume you are talking about the process that breaks features and inserts vertices and not the drug..... There is not a specific Crack command in ArcGIS Pro. Several geoprocessing tools will crack features such as intersect. Also when you validate a topology it will crack intersecting features based on the cluster tolerance.

    Just like in the early 2000s when we did not want to go away from our Command Line and AMLs, Esri is not going to give you a choice. However it will still be a couple of years before ArcMap is completely gone.

    Great video easy to follow, I personally think geocoding or more importantly rematching is much easier and better in Arc Map. In Arc Map, you can sort the records and you can pick a point on the map if you know the xy coordinates but its not in your network dataset. Rematching is more limited in Arc Pro.
