Architect Designs a Small Home with a Sustainable and Timeliness Interior Design (House Tour)

Passionate about creating a small home that considers a sustainable future, Marc and Felicity Bernstein at Hütt Homes collaborated with Blum to bring functionality into their family’s sustainable home. From the exterior of the small home, the architecture considers brick and concrete as main elements of the design, while the interior uses timber as a key material to minimise the home’s carbon footprint. Utilising an open plan approach in the small home allows for a connection to the rear and first-floor gardens. Throughout the residence, a sense of communal living has been infused alongside sustainable elements.
In the sunken living room - where the sense of the communal spirit of the small home is evoked - the surrounding timber edges allow for extra seating for larger gatherings. At the other end of the house, the kitchen and dining room showcase the collaboration with Blum through storage units and cupboards. Helping to provide functionality, organisation and ergonomics while increasing the home's passive living, Blum specified products such as the LEGRABOX in the kitchen and first-floor bedrooms to enhance storage and aesthetic function.
Moving upstairs to the private spaces, Blum has assisted with the home’s organisation and ergonomics with floor-to-ceiling cupboards in the master to staircase storage systems in the children’s rooms. Additionally, a net has been installed in the children’s rooms, hanging over the ground level and allowing for extra play space without taking away from liveable areas. Further assisting with the passive living of the home, a garden has been installed on the first level and a living green wall in the bathroom adds a natural flow of oxygen. Continuing the importance of indoor air quality, a mechanical heat recovery system has been installed to capture fresh air and remove any stale air. Furthermore, a heat exchanger allows for temperature stability all year while maintaining energy efficiency.
Throughout the small home, an emphasis on creating a carbon neutral project is referenced in the architecture and interior design choices. From the use of timber to the living green wall and connections to the gardens, sustainability is the key focus of Blum and Hütt Homes' collaboration. An inspiration for upcoming architects and designers to think and design responsibly, TMRW Home is a responsible family residence that considers the present and the future.

and, it's perfect that it's a passive house - the airtightness also leads to sound isolation from outside, which the plot absolutely requires. I bet you would go nuts living in a regular house that close to the tracks but I am certain that they don't hear it at all

@@mrvk39 It's an easy assumption to make, but I live in a regular brick built house just as close to the tracks, built in the 80's and experience hardly any disturbance from the trains at all inside, garden is a different story though😅.

@@Ronjohnalex I also lived in a brick building near subway tracks. And I could hear everything. Maybe you had very good windows with sound isolation. I had old metal ones that came with the building built in the 1970s,

We also invested in Blum product for our renovation last year and we haven’t looked back. It was worth every penny. What a joy to open and close cabinetry and drawers with a light touch. If you can’t quite afford Blum just now, wait and save, or even invest piece by piece. It really is next level.

This is such a beautiful house. I love the design, layout functionality. Depending on where the houses are, I always find it strange to have a dark outer surface. I know the black is sleek but sometimes too many houses with black outer surface just makes the house hot. So you will then have to incorporate more cooling and ventilation system.

Love it! It's beautiful, simple, absolutely functional and tailored to their lifestyle, very thoughtfully designed... that's some great architecture right there! Personally I think I wouldn't want to live right next to the train tracks, but I appreciate that they went for a plot that would otherwise remain unused and made the absolute best of it.

It's a beautiful home. I especially love the 70's inspired (and I mean that in the best possible way!), sunken sofa area! One thing I personally don't like, is the closeness of the train tracks. I am not worried about the noise, some people get used to it, others don't. But the "fine" dust wrecks havoc on your body, especially on lungs/airways. I assume you have some good filters installed, so hopefully that helps. Having lived close to train tracks, like this, has caused me some serious, life long, health issues. I had no clue, when I moved there (just how bad it would be), and I was poor, so I had no other choice.. But hopefully it isn't as bad in this area! Thank you for sharing though, the house is beautiful!
