ARCHICAD Stairs & Railings Tutorial 1 - Subtle Controls & Settings

These controls are essential yet not very obvious! Speed up your learning curve for the new Stair and Railing tools introduced in ARCHICAD 21. After you watch this video, check out my NEW in-depth training course at www.bobrow.com/stairs
This new Stairs & Railings Training will be broadcast in 4 live sessions via GoToWebinar in October and November 2017, and available for permanent reference through the Masters of ARCHICAD website.
The course will be a unique synthesis of several key ingredients. I will go over general principles (so you understand how everything fits together), demonstrate and explain practical step by step methods and tips (like in this video), and also build a variety of interesting stairs and railings submitted by architects enrolled in the course. These may be modeled live during the session, or done ahead of time so I can show how all the settings work to create the intricate design arrangement.
It is my aim to create a fascinating and ultimately very practical educational journey, part of my ongoing MASTERS of ARCHICAD Training Program. I invite you to join me!

    Thanks Eric, that is such a useful and much needed video. I too am struggling with this tool as, whilst looking very powerful, it is not intuitive and at present makes modelling a longer process than it should. I will be viewing this many times in order to speed up my modelling. I am, at present trying to persuade Graphisoft UK to run a 'hands on' workshop on stairs and railing, hopefully this will materialise! Once again many thanks for your assistance.

    Awesome! Now I can finally live again! I have decided to split my time 50/50 between stamp collecting and the Archicad railing tool! That sure is a win/win in my book! I am already having so much fun with the railing tool, it’s not annoying at all! So intuitive, everything flows like a river, I could just not be happier. I think I’ll even skip my vacation this year!

    Onkel Sort - Stairs and railings are a very complex area in architectural design and detailing, requiring a lot of flexibility for any program to be able to accomodate the wide range of contexts, styles and applications. I think Graphisoft has done excellent work in creating a system that can handle most requirements; however inevitably there are things that are less intuitive, and require explanation. I think it's funny how we've come to expect that you don't have to "read the manual" - it should all be obvious, simple and clear, and require no instructions. Anyway, it keeps me busy, decoding the technology and translating it for mere mortals to be able to use efficiently!

    Nice video Eric! I would have some short notes: 9:15 - You do not need to delete the Railing. You can insert a Node on the path, and it will still keep the associativity to the Stair. 12:45 - The distribution didn’t change after setting the ‘Distance from Previous’ parameter, because on the Segment level the Pattern Distribution and Position was set to Equal Distribution. So AC automatically distribute the Inner Posts along the Segment in a way that the maximum distance between them will be what you set on the Segment level. As soon as you change the Pattern Distribution to Fixed Length, AC will use the distance you set on the Inner Post Level (Distance from Previous). In that method you still can define where the distribution should start. 15:50 - On the Railing Settings dialog, Node level, you can set the Pattern Continuity, etc. (So you don’t have to do that manually one by one in Editing mode.)

    Hi, thanks for your help, how can I change the stair to go down instead of up, or viceversa?

    Great Tutorial, thank you ! I wish it would be easier/faster to apply materials to handrails as many only really have 2 or 3 different materials. Handrail, glass or panels, and fixings. I guess after I done a couple and saved them in my favorites I will be off and running faster again :)

    I have been using ArchiCAD 22 for 4 or 5 years (I know, I know - if they fix the stairs and railings I will advocate for an update!) and the problem with railings that I and all my coworkers (who mostly refuse to use the tool at all anymore) have is connections on a U-shaped stair. We are doing schools, so we need tube steel everything, and the connections, especially after the railing turns on the landing and starts up the upper stair run, seem unfixable. I'm surprised how little 'troubleshooting' info I see on this connection issue, since I definitely see other peeps dealing with it too. Any suggestions gratefully accepted! I have folders called 'mutant railings' and 'railing catastrophes'. They are not ADA compliant, I am quite certain...

    Karan Srijan - This ARCHICAD video tutorial shows how to work in version 21 with the new tools for Stairs and Railings. In ARCHICAD 20 and earlier versions, there was a much less sophisticated Stair tool that included basic options for railings; in addition the Object tool (the same one you use to put in a chair or cabinet) has a collection of basic railings that can be used independently of stairs. The new tools in version 21 are much more flexible and powerful, although there is a learning curve since they are much more complex.

    Is there a way to make an evenly distributed horizontal "baluster"? Like a cable railing? The only method I can find is to individually add separate rails.

  • @EricBobrow

    @EricBobrow

    3 жыл бұрын

    @funkle - Unfortunately, there is no option to put in a regular pattern for a cable railing; you have to individually add separate rails, and set their elevations manually to create the regular spacing. I suggest that you create one or more Favorites that have this set up, then it's pretty easy to deploy whenever you need a cable railing. (I agree that this is a "missing feature" that would be good to add to this tool.)

    @@EricBobrow Thanks. setting up horizontals as you suggest, is there a way to have them not continue past the end node? So if you had 2 slightly offset corner posts, the cable would be absent in the space between them?

  • @EricBobrow

    @EricBobrow

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@svenkle To eliminate the cable between the two closely spaced node points, go to Edit mode, turn on the visibility for Segments and Nodes, and select the segment between those nodes. You'll be able to edit the settings for that segment, and eliminate the cable.

    You can fix Ending Node Offset when you type 0 before the size. It is like -. When you type 0 you cut. If you want to resset it just type only 0 :)

    @Free ForEveryOne - I'm not sure I understand what you are referring to. Is there a particular place in this video in which I had a problem with the Ending Node Offset? Since I haven't watched it for a while, I'm not sure where this might occur, perhaps you can help me locate it, so I can see what you're talking about. Thanks!
