Arches National Park Utah | “Nobody Thinks They Can Die On Vacation” | Devil’s Garden, Delicate Arch

During our visit to Arches National Park, we have a sobering conversation with the park ranger regarding people's dangerous behavior at Delicate Arch. We also hike to several other arches in the Devil's Garden including the 5th longest arch in the world, Landscape Arch.

A couple years back, my buddy and I went to Arches during November. It was beautiful to see the park covered in snow. But when we hiked out to Delicate Arch, the ledge trail (same one you took), was totally covered in ice. We did it in regular sneakers! Looking back, it was an amazing trip but easily the stupidest thing I’ve ever done in my life. When we got back to San Diego, we found out 3 people had fallen into the bowl the day after we were up there. 2 of whom died. It’s an incredible place to visit. But you got to be smart.

Lol. Ya, I’m sure it was beautiful with the snow, but, can understand just how dangerous it would be as well. My buddy and his son hiked Angels Landing in winter and talked about how there was snow and ice on the trail. We’ve all done some silly stupid things that we look back on and wonder how we made it back alive. Makes for good memories and stories, as long as you do make it back... I do seem to take less chances as I get older. I guess wisdom really does come with age. Thanks for sharing your story.✌🏻

I think the trail to Delicate Arch is a lot more dangerous than many people realize. The NPS correctly lists the trail as a strenuous or advanced trail. However, I saw families out there with young children. There’s no way that I would take a young child on the trail to Delicate Arch! The trail has steep dropoffs with no guardrails. The natural amphitheater around Delicate Arch is very steep slickrock where you can easily lose your footing and slide down the steep slope. During the summer the trail is almost completely exposed to the sun with few areas of shade. So heat related illnesses are definitely a major concern on the trail to Delicate Arch. Unfortunately, there have actually been many deaths and injuries on the trail to Delicate Arch.

This video gets one going right off the bat! Such unusual scenery and the music match it perfectly. Really cool. Loved how you pulled us around and brought us in to a “Good Morning”. There are a lot of effects you do with your videos that are uniquely your own. 👍🏼 It always looks like you are walking on a razor’s edge. 😳 Great conversation with the ranger. Enjoyed that. It just seems like these places are just getting too crowded to even go see anymore. Thanks for sharing Ed. You changed your logo! I thought I lost you!! Ram

Delicate Arch was one of the few places on a 2 month trip that actually made me uneasy. If you start to slide, it's over. I did see someone drop a cell phone, and it slid about 100 yards to the bottom of the hole.

@Jon Miner Hey Jon! I highly recommend it. It is incredible and has to be seen first hand to truly feel the grandeur. There are actually many trails there that easier to hike and once again, there are over 2000 arches throughout the park. Even just the drive through will leave you speechless. I didn't state this in the video, but, we were also able to get into the park in the evening for a sunset drive and that was also wonderful. All that being said, if you want to try the paramotor, I think that would be AWESOME, however, plan to spend some time with the authorities afterword. 😂 As always, thanks for watching and commenting! 06:03 - Double O arch approach: You want to make a left hand turn there (basically 15' past where those people were standing.... there should be a poll with an arrow pointing left...that will drop you into the area that takes you right to Double-O easier than the little rock scramble down hike there...when in doubt, just look at the rock you're standing on - if it doesn't look worn, you're likely to not be on the trail...

I love Arches NP. Best to hike early to avoid the crowds as you said and also the heat. Hydrate more than you think you need to. That long span "Landscape Arch" was actually supposed to be called "Delicate Arch" and vice versa. They made a signage error and the rest is history. You took very nice clear footage- what camera are you running? I have a Sony HDR which is similar but yours might be a touch better. Mine has great stability control which helps when skiing- like a built in mechanical gimble (not digital) and it actually works very well.

@D G I did read about the name swap for those arches. Would make more sense to swap them back, but, way to late I suppose. Especially now that Delicate Arch is on the Utah license plate. Believe it or not, I film all first person footage with a GoPro Hero Black 7. I use a Sony Handycam FDR-AX53 for zoom shots. I did just buy a GoPro Hero Black 9 and shot my latest video with that camera: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaFsq6xvZcfNkco.html I don't really care for the color of the Sony FDR vs the GoPro and usually have to color grade the zoom footage to try to match the GoPro.

@@EddieAtLarge Your footage looks great. I'm into mostly photography so I have an eye for these things. I am surprised that Go Pro did such a great job. I usually like the Sony over it but not this time. 1440P is good enough- it's more about the quality of the sensors at that point. Most monitors are only 1080 anyway. Have a look at my channel and the videos. I think they look very good- maybe not quite as good as yours though...but close! BTW, I looked at pics of the WAVE. It looks awesome. The plan, in the spring is to fly into MOAB (CNY.) I guess I will then come down and check out Monument Valley, then head directly to the Wave area. It is a big detour (going to Death Valley before Zion then Sand Hollow then ultimately back to Moab.) It's usually a nice drive out there though so the miles go by quickly. We are also planning to do a astronomy tour near Zion. Happy Holidays- Cheers!

@D G Hey there, checked out your channel and I do agree that I prefer the GoPro footage over the Sony. My Sony looks similar to yours before I color match and even then, I can't get the sky to match up to the GoPro. If you're going to Monument Valley and you have time, take a ride through Valley of the Gods, then up the Moki Dugway and out to Muley Point. Muley Point is really incredible. It drops off 1000' to the valley below and then Goosenecks Canyon drops another 1000' to the river below. Yes, we have a video for that too.... Well, have fun out there and safe travels!

@@EddieAtLarge You really get around. Thanks for the tips! I saw the pics of Muley Point. Many spots in MOAB have views that are even better like Island in the Sky, Chicken Corners Trail, Top of the World and others. Out west it's all nice. If you are a skier- China Bowl at Vail- have lunch at 11,000+ feet, get nice and full then do the sensible thing and hop off the cliff into the bowl. See 3min. 32sec. in from my "Ski & Ride trip" video. Cheers!😉
