Archery | The Tong-ah

Popularly known from the Korean movie, "War of the Arrows", the tong-ah is an overdraw tool used to shoot short arrows. Equivalents include the Turkish majra.

    *Frequently Asked Questions* *Wouldn't you shoot your thumb off?* Correct technique would involve placing the thumb down, which is normal for shooting arrows off the thumb anyway. The arrow and cradle are held against the bow with the string hand, not with the bow hand. Of course you should know how to do this correctly before attempting it yourself, but it's a safe tool. *It isn't cheating! It's...* It's a joke. Relax. *What don't you shoot it?* I said in the video that I acquired this item since it was broken by its previous owner. The arrows have been split and are taped together, and the cradle itself is also split. There are plenty of demonstrations of tool if you search up its various names - tong-ah, majra or solenarion. Recommended viewing: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4ejp8l6lsjen8o.html *Is it similar to a crossbow?* I'm not exactly sure where this is coming from. Visually, the shorter arrow looks like a crossbow bolt, but the method of operation was entirely different. Crossbows trigger-operated weapons intended to penetrate armour at relatively close distances and used by lesser trained men. The tong-ah is primarily used for long-distance shooting and requires a high degree of training, as often was the case with archers in general.

    NUSensei how does the bow cope with the lighter arrow weight without the risk of it being like dry firing the bow? I have a short Turkish bow, and it comes with a minimum grain/weight limit of arrows that I can shoot before it becomes like dry firing the bow.

    Hi Nu Sensei. As a Korean, it's really nice to see a video about the Pyeonjeon. Any Korean who knows a thing about Korean traditional archery are usually very proud about the Pyeonjeon(sometimes too much). Just to add a bit more, during the Joseon Dynasty, the Pyeonjeon were both symbolistic techniques of the Koreans and also a military secret. So much of a secret that modern Korean archers had a hard time to even find traditional manuals of shooting one. Considering the Korean history of the time, they were often used against Manchurians because the two countries had constant skirmishes around the border, and there are many records of how the Manchurians viewed the Pyeonjeon to be a very fearful weapon. There's even a record when Koreans were volleying long range shots, where the enemy would just avoid them or even block the arrows with their swords, and the Koreans being pissed, whipped out their Pyeonjeons and the enemy would be helpless against those shots. Also, just to point out a fact, the Pyeonjeon and Tong-ah are definitely some tools that need skill. It was known to occasionally have accidents where less skilled archers would shoot their own hand. Of course that shouldn't happen with the right techniques, but the risk during the learning curve was definitely there.

    Is there any record that stated it was a military secret? Byzantine military manuals is the first to record such a weapon, and then the Chinese also recorded such a weapon just a few years after the Byzantine. Also, the Turks have this weapon. So how is that a military secret when its usage can be traced to all over the Euro-Asian continent?

    @supreme king drive.google.com/file/d/1bBiyWFHe-HkIvj9GUCK0XAVKBpSHFXYC/view Indeed, the Tang and Song dynasties did use this weapon and named it "筒箭" or Tong Jian, in their military tests. The Tang also set up an army wielding this weapon and called it "筒射军." The Song army also used this weapon in their armies: "唐制武舉有筒射,今軍中亦有之。筒射之箭長纔尺餘,剖筒之半,長與常弓所用箭等。留二三寸不剖為筈,以傅弦内箭,筒中注箭弦上,筒旁為竅,穿小绳繫于腕,彀弓既發,豁筒向手背,激矢射敵,中者洞貫,所謂筒箭也。" Ming dynasty also used this weapon, and the Baoding archers are known to be skilled in using this weapon, and they were requisitioned by the government to aid general Qi Jiguang against the Woku (the Japanese pirates). There were quite a lot of mentionings in Byzantinian records as well.

    @Hoàng Nguyên well bows in general bring more fire rate to the table than crossbows, and also boast greater ranges depending on your drawweight, if we're talking warbows you can guess it's gonna be 80-120 pounds for an english one. Korean bows i'm uncertain of the drawweights but i would imagine they're similar. On top of that is production costs of a crossbow vs a bow, crossbows have more moving parts and therefore are more complex to make. A bow is generally comprised of 2 types of wood, a soft wood and a hard wood, and of course the string.

    NUSensei - Cool video, thanks for making it. Some commenters point out that the use of the Tong-ah reduces weight per arrow allowing more to be carried or at least least a lighter load, which is distinct plus but it also decreases the amount of space needed for carrying arrows. Shorter quivers are less likely to snag on things. The Tong-ah maximizes available resources beyond reusing broken arrows. The amount of wood needed for one long arrow can make two arrows for a Tong-ah archer. So it not only increases the amount of arrows that can be carried, it also increases the amount of arrows that can be made. With all It's advantages it's really surprising that the Tong-ah is so obscure in the western world.

People should do as much research on how to use the Tong- ah before trying at home. Otherwise you could end up with an arrow into your bow hand. Also a side note, this technique was used by nomads eg Turks to shoot back Chinese crossbow bolts .

    I have been a fan of archery since before I made my first string and stick bow, that might have only lasted for one draw.... I just cam across your channel and so far I enjoy the history. I just learned of similar methods to this that instead of the bamboo channel, The would actually tie longer heavier shafted arrows directly to the string at where it knocked. Then they would use all sorts of devices as projectiles. Even tubes with shot pushed out by the arrow shaft like a piston. Smaller arrows that would sit on the end of the fixed arrow, even Caltrops for anti-personnel and livestock. There is a device out there that can hold your bow at full draw until your ready to fire. It’s been marketed as an aide for disabled archers. Personally it’s just the same as a crossbow. With a cost comparison between the two it seems like the crossbow is not only easier to use but also more affordable. Coming to terms with your age and or disability is difficult and if the device lets even one person still do what they love then it’s a win. Now the company that put bullies on the tips of arrows.... yeah I’ll just skip that..lol.

    Apparently, the Byzantine equivalent was called a "solenarion." The Romans and Greeks were both famously uninterested in archery and only slowly adapted using it after getting hammered over and over by horse archers. It seems to be a carry-over from Proto-Indo-European society where combat was supposed to be an epic one-on-one as a test of personal strength etc. So to them, all of archery was "cheating"... lol. (In contrast, the Persians, another Indo-European group, became famously very good at horse archery very early on. With few exceptions, this led to stalemates for over 1000 years. Heavy infantry cannot defeat horse archers in the field, and horse archers cannot take a fort from heavy infantry.)

  • @olivebranch4166

    Ok, two things. 1) the madra/tongah is a hunting tool. 2) the bolts were made to kept after a battle from arrows that landed and are now ruined. Most wood arrows split or break. In the types of wars they were used in were attrition wars, meaning the defenders did not have the capacity to make arrows constantly but had to salvage. Logic would tell us that this obvious hunting technique (short bolt, high rate of speed+power) would be used in such a war. It is economical and not that hard to learn when you already have basic technique for the thumb.

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    For some reason, people seem to think that the flexing of the arrow affects accuracy. The arrow oscillates, but the arrow flies straight. The arrow veers off if it the arrow is not well tuned for the bow (too stiff or too soft), but an experienced archer will know how much to compensate by. Wind drift will have a much bigger affect on accuracy than oscillation.

    You didn't mention any disadvanatges of using shorter arrows, one thing I noticed of older videos describing this technique is that they don't describe their weaknesses either. Wouldn't a shorter arrow have less penetrating power? Would this be offset enough by its faster speed? Also what about the effects of wind? Speaking of the Turkish and Koreans using this, you should see those older videos there are folks taking turns to see which side Koreans or the Turks are better archers and who came up with this technique first. LOL.

  • @arkhtyi9456

    @arkhtyi9456

    Most of what you mentioned are correct. The lighter weight makes it more affected by winds, especially in long distance shooting. The lighter projectile gives a bit more strain to the bow. But the penetrating power isn't too much of a concern as the extra speed makes it in some cases better, according to KE = 1/2 m v ^2

    Short arrow was way more powerful than normal arrow, because it was shorter, shooting range was longer than normal arrow and also, penetration was much more efficient than normal arrow. It is written in Korean historical documents all over However, disadvantage was this type of arrow only can be shot by highly skilled archer, cause if someone with no trained hands it could cause serious injuries to the shooter but since every Koreans were already highly trained archer in ancient times, so that was not the problem at all

    @brentoni2922

    It in no way turns a bow into a crossbow, the arrow is basically the same size as a crossbow bolt so they have similar aerodynamics but they are being fired by very different pieces of equipment. Because a crossbow holds the draw for its user they can easily take their time to line up their shot meaning that it is a lot easier for unskilled users to fire accurately. Also because the draw is being held by the equipment rather than the archer they are able to use draw weights higher than an archer would normally be able to hold for even a moment, and with the use of stirrups, winches or other such devices they can use draw weights that a traditional archer could not even hope to draw.

  • @IIDASHII

    @IIDASHII

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@brentoni2922 The only advantage you describe here is the ability to use a crossbow with less training. Otherwise, the crossbow is incredibly inefficient. The power stroke is so short that the massive draw weights were a necessity just to reach the energies that a normal archer could achieve with a normal war bow. Using a crossbow sized arrow with the longer draw stroke of a war bow would have resulted in a shot with FAR more speed and energy than the average historical crossbow. In short, this would be much more effective than all but the most powerful and difficult to use crossbows (and perhaps even them) in terms of terminal effect.

They don't need the skill, speed, strength, practice, or patience of a normal archer. This is actually why they were so valuable to war. The crossbowman was easier and faster to train. Bolts could also be heavier and use less material. For a while, before firearms, a good bowman essentially became the equivalent of a sniper.

    I may just be talking out my ar-se here, but um, real feathers are used, not rigid vanes. The feathers are also typically small to reduce drag on loooong flights, increasing range while decreasing visual detectability likely being the main function here. The arrows would also likely have very heavy tips, maintaining the minimum GPP to prevent damage to the bow. This is a dangerous device, you can end up with an arrow in your bow hand.

    Interesting and pleasant storytelling. There may be an advantage that is overlooked. Crossbows and modern compound bows do not suffer from some archer's or arrow's paradox. Long arrows on a classical/recurve bow are fired in a way that forces them around the middle of the bow and consequently make a left-right zig-zag or wiggle trajectory. Could the Tong-Ah prevent this, making precise shooting easier? A short thick arrow is not really more aerodynamic, I'd think, but its weight has lots of kinetic energy. Anyhow it seem simple and very clever. I wonder if it predates the crossbow invention.

  • @cloudrouju526

    In essence it's a crossbow without the triggering mechanism. Two additional advantage for a short arrow is that it takes less material to make therefore much more cost effective, and a soldier can carry more ammo therefore more effective.

    Not to be "that guy" but technically this would be LESS aerodynamic, being a shorter cylinder. It is well-known amongst crossbow shooters, for example, that their bolts will not fly as far as an arrow, even with the same initial velocity and weight. I suspect this short arrow is longer range because it is significantly lighter, and therefore has a much higher initial velocity. One problem with making a very powerful bow is that the arrows have to be thicker to withstand the forces of being shot... this solves that problem.

    Question 1. Why do people place the Tong-ah and arrow on the right side of the bow? For a normal recurve you expect a similar form placing the arrow on the left. 2. Isn't a heavier arrow better at reserving kinetic energy? With the same pull, a heavier arrow would have a lower initial speed, which makes air friction lower. 3. You mentioned a lot of countries use this in history. However we don't see this sort of arrow guide as a standard equipment in many armies. What is the reason? By the way, are there any disadvantages using a Tong-ah?

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    5 жыл бұрын

    The tong-ah and similar tools are used exclusively by people who shot using the thumb draw, which places the arrow on the right side of the bow (for a right-handed shooter). The "normal" method which is more familiar to Western archery is based on the Mediterranean draw, with the string pulled by the index, middle and ring fingers which necessitates the arrow being placed on the left. Heavy arrows would, according to physics, preserve kinetic energy better. However, the greater mass means it requires more weight to propel, and the lower initial velocity greatly hampers its effective range. Historically, heavier armour-piercing arrows were only used at extremely close distance. Lighter arrows were used for shooting distant volleys. As for why this was not widespread throughout "most" armies, it was because the style of warfare used in each region differed and may not have necessitated the tool. That it was known and used in Korea, China, the Turkish peoples and the Byzantines is impressively widespread. However, it was a specialised too used for a specific purpose, and for other nations the "normal" method of shooting may be sufficient for the purposes they were deployed for. Such a tool would not be so important in an English army, which focused on massed arrow barrages, or the Mongols, who relied on quick hit-and-run cavalry tactics at short distance.

    My understanding of the scene is that he wasn't trying to snipe with a shorter arrow. Rather, in the scene preceding it, he is able to grab and bunch of arrows, including a broken shaft. He makes the tong-ah in order to use the broken arrow, which was mentioned in the Ambush scene when he shoots it.
