Archery Review: Assyrian Bow by Jackal Archery

Ойын-сауық

The gentlemen bow! Beautiful curves, very well made and the shooting experience is simply great. 32" draw, smooth, NO hand shock! Did I mention that this bow does 200fps? Well done Jackal Archery.

After watching many of Armin's reviews, I decided to buy the Jackal Assyrian laminated bow. Just received my new bow yesterday. I am extremely happy with this bow. Thank you Armin, you opened a whole new archery experience to me, you gave something wonderful to me through your generous gift of sharing information. Many thanks.

Love your work Armin, I can attest you do a great job for these bowyer’s & companies as I end up looking up 90% of the companies you review & i’ve been inspired to buy multiple bows from your videos alone, thanks for doing what you do as there is a distinct lack of good reviews for traditional asiatic bows

Looks like the bow is a winner . I've seen a few modern interpretations of the Assyrian bow in various materials , all laminated wood , wood , horn and sinew and now in a modern lay-up . The common thing in the design is a long sweeping pronounced recurve of the whole limb which gives a very smooth draw and release . Usually the bow is longer than the Jackal version but as Mr.Himer has shown they did an A-1 job . I would love to shoot one ..... hmmmm :)

I bought the Jackal Assyrian a few weeks ago, I have shot approximately 500 arrows with it, so very familiar to me now. I bought 52 pound at 28 inch draw, but I draw 30.5 inch, and I guess about 58 pound at that draw length. I am extremely happy with this bow. My one is a little different to the one reviewed, it does not have the bracing plate that was slightly rough in the review, and it is made of ash, american walnut, and fibreglass. It is a VERY nice bow!😀

Dear Armin, I have been thinking about either buying this bow or the Living Arrow Horse Bow. I am still not sure why there are not so many asymmetrical bows being made. There are lots of expensive bows... if asymmetrical is more accurate.. better hand shock protection... is it ONLY because margins for bow makers would be less???? Were Assyrian bows originally asymmetrical? By the way... I am enjoying listening to The Archer. Sure takes some courage to have that kind of publication... I think. Fantastic videos... love what you are doing. Jano.

I live in the United States and don't seem to have an easy way to get one of these Assyrian Bows by Jackal Archery, but it does look very nice. I am definitely thinking about Flagella Dei Scythian bows due to your review. At 350 euros do you think this Jackal Bow is three times the better? I shoot plenty of compound archery but want to try out this more traditional style with thumb release and shoot both hands. You make it look fun! I appreciate your time.

Hi Adam. Thanks a lot. For a start with thumb release, the Scythian from Flagella Dei is sure enough. A said in my opinion one of the best bows, when you see performance, design AND price. Later (2 years or so) you still can switch to a nice Jackal with more # :)

In your opinion, how is the noise at 10 GPP? How does it compare to the AF archery or Ali Bow Turkish designs with the string bridges? I am asking from the perspective of a bow hunter, basically.

  • @Dan0e30

    @Dan0e30

I hunt with an AF Archery Turkish bow and shoot "turkish" style. I hunt grouse and rabbits mostly. My bows are 50 & 55 lbs and have never had an issue with the noise. I have had an issue with game seeing my khatra. There fore I use a twist of the wrist khatra now. But the "noise" of the bow has not been an issue. I have shot a grouse at 22ish meters and it did not move until the arrow hit. I shot a rabbit at 27ish meters and same thing. They don't seem to hear the bow before the arrow hits. Hope this helps.

  • @ArminHirmer

of course this bow is a bit more quiet, as the string does not slap hard on a string bridge. But for hunting it will make no big difference

That is great to hear! I have the AF Turkish 50 lb, I love that bow... was worried about the noise, especially with deer. This Jackal Assyrian seems to be considerably quieter, with the AliBow Kaiyuan II I got today being somewhere in the middle. At this point I think the AF and the AliBow are my favorites, but I really want to get one of these. I shoot primarily Mediterranean but I am learning the thumb release starting today... It's a work in progress, but it's surprisingly easy to get used to. I don't think I know what you mean by the twist-of-the-wrist khatra. I got the AliBow Kaiyuan II (arrived today) after seeing Armir's review of it, and I have to say that it is everything he said it was, it is nice to have a reviewer that I can trust. I have a Kassai Greyhound that I plan on sending back, the thing is literally whisper-quiet but it is very inconsistent. Every other bow I own, I can nail what I want when I want, but that one is just super finicky for no good reason... Sometimes I stack the arrows on top of each other and sometimes they are literally all over the target! I actually figured out why today: The handle is not a round triangle/oval that is wider on the sides back and narrower in the front but is instead basically a rectangle which makes it a poor fit for any hand and it's too curved on the belly of the grip which makes it very difficult to do the exact same thing with every time... it rocks around differently with even the slightest change. It's also overpriced in the USA (450 USD for a fiberglass bow) and a slow shooter (145-150 fps @ 41 lbs with a 380ish grain arrow, 170ish @ 51 lbs, that's slow even for a fiberglass bow), so with that kind of inconsistency it's got to go... I really wanted to like it, especially with how quiet it is. A minor handle redesign would make a literal world of difference, and I wish I could get a laminated version.

  • @Dan0e30

Nice to hear someone else will be hunting with this style. I found thumb release to be the best way to shoot short bows. (No finger pinch) Yes it takes some getting used to and lots of practice but the rewards are great. (The speed you can shoot and reload at, being able to carry arrows in your "release" hand (Turkish Style), less need for a noisy, clumsy quiver, being able to stalk through think bush without the arrow falling off the rest. All have come in very good hand for me) Armin has some great video's on using thumb release. They helped me learn a lot.

I would not recommand to shoot too light arrows for too long, the arrow is supposed to absord the energy of the limbs so it needs to be heavy enough otherwise you get too much vibration, the limbs become fragile and you might feel pain in your wristle, elbow and shoulder because of these vibration.

Nice bow, the hand grip looks a bit ugly though. Grozer assryian looks much more aesthetic. Performance wise comparable. 👌

For this price you might aswell throw in 50 euros more for a Grózer biocomp Assyrian

esthetically maybe but a bow is also about performances, Ash, bamboo with fiber glass inside the limbs and the curves of the bow itself, if the glue is good it could be the best bow on the market considering the price, the durability and the speed of the arrow.
