Archer to me is the literal saddest/tragic character in fate series and may even be the saddest character in all of anime because of his fate as a Counter Guardian is infinite never will he not suffer, never will he not fight, never will he reach his goals, all he has is regrets

This is something that gets misunderstood and infact is meant as a misdirect even having other characters believe the intention to be true. Archers wish was not to kill Shirou but to instead free Shirou from having to walk the same path as him. This is shown not only in words but in actions. If Archer wanted to kill Shirou the task could have been easily done as the difference in skill and power was clearly huge. Shirou might be able to adapt as he fights Archer but Archer still would have won. The show also hints that Archer knew who he was but may have not remembered everything because he recognized Rin after seeing her. If a servant doesn't remember their name or legend they are not able to use their noble phantasm or main ability as their abilities name and their legend would both be lost. But Archer knows his abilities and his origin. His goal is to frame his intentions as distrust for Shirou trying to distance Rin from him and allow the task of changing events to be easier but that plan fails. Remember this is the hero that can summon and throw noble phzntasms that he can supercharge to explode like nukes. The definitive point is how he would convince Shirou. He uses multiple conversations to try to break apart his logic and ideals and when that fails wounds Shirou to remove him from the conflict and to give him time to reflect hoping that the action would frustrate him and lead him to give up his dream. Even at the last fight Archer is trying to kill his ideals and not Shirou. Archer also remembers that Avalon is inside Shirou thus giving him increased healing. Shirou's persistence in his fight and desire to fight for that dream causes Archer to remember fully the thing he forgot. Why he became a Hero. With that remembered Archer let's Shirou's swords strike true and admits defeat. The real Archer now understanding himself and accepting the outcome. It's the principle of having a fight with your younger self and striving to help them avoid things. In the end if they avoid those things they would never learn the lesson and the value that was gained would be lost. Shirou would a not be diswaided from his path and his lessons were ones he had to learn himself.

There are things that require you to watch this several times to find the deeper layers, and this show gets better every time I watch it. The struggles of human morality, the downsides of godlike figures, belief, and honestly there's a lot about this series that deconstructs real world religion.

I totally have a thing for heroes with tragic backstories. Vash the Stampede(Trigun) and Archer are my #1 and 2. They share enough traits I'm pretty convinced Vash is the Fate/Stay creator's inspiration for Archer.

I feel like Archer is more tragic, while both Vash and Archer have suffered for countless years inspite of their attempts at being heroes, Vash atleast is able to die and finally achieve some level of peace. Archer meanwhile can NEVER rest, as a Counter Guardian he''ll always exist, always be forced to kill people no matter how much he doesn't want to and even if by some miracle he gains some modicum of hope, it'll be fleeting. I mean this guy was so miserable he attempted to murder his younger self on the fleeting chance it would erase him from existence. This guy wanted to die so badly he was willing to erase himself completely.

There's 5 but one is a non violent path from the Ilyas (the magical girl) world. That Shiro never felt hardship or loss and is overall a happy and carefree character.

While Unlimited Blade Works probably dives into him and his past selves relationship, the most thoughtfully it also really undermines all his characterization and analysis with the end. Shirou get an easy answer to the complex problem that is the whole situation and ideals. His answer to archer in the long run amounts to you could’ve done it all if you had encountered a future version of yourself so you could get all the power you needed to become a hero by copying it all off a version of yourself that had already sacrificed themselves and lost everything.

Ive been waiting for this baybeee let's goooo Also Fate is superior to any of the anime you mentioned.

@@SteinsAlter I've watched both of those, Full metal 03' and brotherhood, as well as read the manga for AOT. I've watched a LOT of anime in my life, but there's nothing like Fate, and that's what makes it amazing. The perfect mix of historical fiction, philosophy, and amazing character design makes it hold the pedestal for me.

Fate is good but in a mess. At this point The conclusion is a matter of bias opinion, if an anime has immersed you and impacted you that much then it’s your top anime. Steins gate is my favourite but I can say unbiasly isn’t the at most best.

@@SteinsAlter yeah couldn't have put it better myself. All great anime named honestly (Steins Gate is also really underrated), but Fate gets convoluted which can deter new fans tbh. Zero is least a good jump point for people imo, as someone who read the OG novel as a kid, I think Zero is the peak for it honestly. And the adaption we've gotten for Fate aren't as good as Zero unfortunately, least imo They cut too much from the novel

unfortunately we dont live in a perfect world but i think ufotable makes up for that by enhacing scenes with its production value and that also zero wouldve been easier to adapt
