Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano Excommunicated & Found Guilty of Schism | EWTN News Nightly

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has been excommunicated by the Vatican after being found guilty of schism. This is the most severe penalty that can be imposed on a baptized Catholic. Senior Vatican Analyst for EWTN News, Frank Rocca, joins to discuss what the penalty of excommunication actually imposes. Rocca shares how unusual it is for the Vatican to declare a bishop or archbishop excommunicated. He explains how Archbishop Vigano, a senior Vatican official under 2 popes, ended up in this position. Rocca tells us whether there's been any response from Archbishop Vigano as he has rejected the authority of Pope Francis for some time. He fills us in on what the case of Archbishop Vigano says about the state of the Church today.

    The process of an excommunication is not a simple wave of the wand. It involves a lot of investigation and evaluation. Some causes for it are more cut-and-dry. Viganó was not a holy priest. A holy priest submits to Rome, even if they disagree. A holy priest may appeal to the pope if they disagree (like Paul did with Peter), but they won’t then reject the vicar of Christ. The liberal bishops, it depends on who we’re referring to. A crime of heresy if different from a sin of heresy, and for some of them, they’ve been extremely sneaky with how they do it to where the canonical legal system may take more time before official action is taken against them, even though we all know what they’re doing. Both sides are very unholy, they’re just appearing in different ways.

    Pope Francis has been very clear that he’s got his eye on the German bishops. The actions of excommunication are not as simple as people like to think it is. Viganó’s was more cut-and-dry because of how explicit he was with rejecting the papacy - he turned into Martin Luther. With the Germans bishops, it’ll have to be one individual at a time, and evaluating every crime of heresy committed, not just sins of heresy, which is different. That one will likely take more time. People think that if they aren’t hearing news, then nothing is happening. People forget something…the Pope doesn’t owe you an explanation. Sorry - he doesn’t. Whatever actions he’s taking, whether right or wrong, we still recognize him as the vicar of Christ and act in obedience, even when uncomfortably. Either be a traditional Catholic who stands by the papacy, or be a neo-Protestant and disobey. The choice is yours.

More and more Catholics do not receive the right evangelization needed to sustain their faith because of the "politics, corruption, abuse " being played by church leaders. The problem with the Catholic Church is not Vigano, rather the overwhelming number of Joe Stalin's "School of Darkness" homosexual spawn in the priesthood and hierarchy -- estimated to be 90% in the Vatican -- 60% of U.S. priests / 88% of U'S. bishops. This is the conundrum always created by those who refuse any criticism of Vatican II. How can you legitimately criticize it when you’ve always been a part of this post Conciliar Church? That’s like saying how can you have a criticism of the American government when you’ve always lived here? They’ve spent 60 yrs defending man made documents, with endless man made interpretations as if they are perfect and infallible. They are not and the devastating consequences prove that, millions have left in droves. Worst of all, in less than one generation, most Catholics no longer believe in The True Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. This is the greatest tragedy of our time. Yet, still, there is no logical evaluation of Vatican II to assess its outcomes and impact on the faith. That alone is an outrage, let alone that one cannot even question it.

    Criticism is allowed and the Vatican has tolerated it for decades. But Vigano called the Pope a false pope and even accused him of heresy. Put all this in perspective: Viganó decides to be a whistleblower, whether right or wrong, in disobedience to his office. He goes into hiding like a coward rather than facing his enemies. He continues to release statements in hiding. He’s summoned multiple times to appear in Rome and doesn’t appear. He refuses to recognize Francis as the pope, making his in a very objective and literal way a schismatic. He rejects papal conclusions and counsels. “Yeah, but some saints confronted popes.” Some saints appealed to popes they disagreed with, but they never became disobedient schismatics. They continued to fulfill their offices, even when they disagreed. Viganoó and Martin Luther are very similar. Both acknowledged that the Catholic Church is the one true church. Both decided that they were right and the entire papal authority is wrong. Both continued to promote schism. Both were issued excommunications/papal bulls and refused to accept them. Viganó is a neo-Protestant. Anyone who favors Viganó over the pope is too.

    Mr Television, since you are so much in the know, could you give us please the precise definition of schism, namely what is the proper form of the crime of schism? Then also could you tell us please all the circumstances when it is canonically (legally) permitted to doubt / not to recognise a certain pontificate in time as valid? Also, could you please point out if it is morally permissible for a lay Catholic to try to usurp the authority to canonically declare other catholics outside the church? EDIT / SPOILER ALERT: The above questions should not be attempted to be given responses by an unlearned individual, especially the first two, while the last question is rethorical.

  • @ChachiTelevision1979

    @ChachiTelevision1979

    @@john_scott I know very little, but I know the basic definition of schism. Canon 751: “Schism is the withdrawal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff or from communion with the members of the Church subject to him.” That’s precisely what Viganó is guilty of. Whether you agree with and understand his plight is irrelevant. Once you step outside of that and decide that the reining pope is not the pope, regardless of what you think of him, it is still an act of schism. According to Code 1325 §2, it is never permissible to claim the current pontificate is invalid. That is not the same as having concerns with the pope’s actions and words, or disagreeing with him. But in disagreeing with him, you have to still submit to his office as the vicar of Christ. No, it is not permissible for a lay Catholic to usurp the authority to canonically declare other Catholics to be outside of the Church. I never did that. The Holy See, who do have the authority, did. Viganó very deliberately said the Francis is not the pope, refused to show up to his summons, and doubled down on his actions. He has become Martin Luther 2.0. But regardless of whether I agree with his plight or I think it’s wrong is irrelevant. People aren’t getting that. No matter how much they love Pope Francis or get frustrated with him, it doesn’t matter. Either you’re a Catholic and you submit to the papal authority, even in moments of concern, or you disobey and separate yourself.

    Part of why I left and became a Christian. I was Catholic for 45 years. Vigano is a brave man to stand up to all the things the Catholics are doing. The Catholic church has bent the knee and looked away too many times. I'll be praying for all Catholics as this has to be crushing to those that see the truth.

    You are calling Christ a liar, then. Because He promised that the Gates of Hades would never prevail against His Church founded on The Rock, Saint Cephas, Simon Peter. You are putting men between you and Christ. Christ never promised that His Church leaders would all be saints. You have given up the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul, And Divinity. What a shame.

    Vigano defended biblical teachings by opposing the Second Vatican Council Indeed, the results of the Second Vatican Council gave rise to divisions within Catholicism itself into two camps Between Traditionalists and Ocumenists And Vigano actually questioned the papacy for action The aim is to re-evaluate the Second Vatican Council As a Protestant, I find it sad that excommunication is being carried out But that's when there is no balance in the church Those who oppose are immediately excommunicated With all the arguments they believe about the supremacy of a leader Actually, where are the Catholics going now?

    @@teresastephenson84 Teresa, this isn't the first time that we have had a anti-pope in Church History. One thing that we've learned from those immoral popes are that obedience to the chair of Peter is a must because it's the authority we adhere to, not the man. Granted, if the pope proves himself to be anathema'd then... Also, marietta, we have every right to criticize the unsaintly pope when he strays from his role.
