I know this video is old at this point but I'm actually receiving a descendent of your loft and have been squinting at gimpel trying to figure out how it would be transferred to a non-gimpel bird (if at all), and in the process of talking to *my* breeder about it, they sent me this to show me your older crosses. God they're so beautiful! Also I love your setup - hate seeing filthy lofts and this is so tidy. Thanks in advance for your hard work! Really interested to see what crossing a blondinette gimpel with a rec. white lucerne known to be carrying blue shield is gonna do! (I love those mis-marked pied birds personally, and my current Lucernes just hand me clone after clone lol)

Well, I don't know what colors you'll get first generation with a cross to Lucerne, but if you want to get Gimpel Lucerne you'll have to do both an F1 backcross to Gimpel and cross the F1s to each other. You will get a lot of color genes expressed in the F2 off spring, but if you keep selecting for closest color from both breeding strategies while also selecting for Lucerne physical traits, you'll get there. You might end up with something even more beautiful.

@@jupiterkent Oh, I'm not really in a space to set up a breeding program for color at the moment, though a new line of Lucernes with toy stencil and gimpel would be incredibly cool, and may be something I look into in the future if I set up a larger loft - at the moment I'm one of those silly companion breeders XD so I'm most interested in breeding for temperament - but I adore some surprises in terms of color/pattern and have always admired stencil - even if what I'll get isn't the homozygous one, or it skips entirely and the offspring just picks up check (which I have NONE of in my loft but heavily covet lol!). I was originally going to get another Lucerne, but I'm invested in receiving healthy, socialized birds so I can spend time with what will ultimately be my breeders and they can help teach their kids that people are good and have treats! - And unfortunately, my favored Lucerne breeder is running out of stock unrelated to my birds. Considering the general rarity of Lucernes as companion pigeons (compared to COFs, for instance, which I see all the time), I want to be able to sometimes hand off a pair for others to start their own breeding, but want to give them the best genetic diversity in their foundation as possible to counteract inbreeding that may happen down the road. When I saw that a breeder in my circle had one of the (descended) birds from your beautiful loft, I decided to say heck with it - let's have some fun and slap a cool pattern onto a Lucerne. I'm sure the structure won't be exactly the same, but I'm fairly certain the longer head and beak will have a greater influence on the COF head than the COF will on the Lucerne, and you keep peak and grouse, so - I'm happy with that pairing! Pairing that with another Lucerne will certainly bring it much closer to the right shape, and I know there are laced Lucernes in the U.S., so if somebody wanted to there's more out there to pour into the mix to refine pattern. But really my general curiosity about gimpel has been whether it is the recessive or dominant gene that affects the neck, but I'm 90% certain its the dominant now, so I can plug this stuff into the calculator and see what comes out. Fun! Anyway, congrats on such an awesome project, you've produced some really wonderful-looking birds
