I had a similar situation where one late night, I was heading to the reading room and a girl was also going to the same place. Since it was very late, we were alone for a few minutes, and I was walking in front of her, feeling anxious. I thought I'd made a wrong turn, suddenly turned back, and she screamed. I also screamed. I apologized for scaring her, but we both knew we were scared. That night, I thought about how cruel it is that we have to be cautious, and how can we make people less scared? I totally relate to this happening to me whenever I take Uber. In fact, it happened just yesterday when my Uber driver decided to take a shortcut. He was even providing me with a live commentary on our route to get back to the main road just to make me feel safe. I want to have faith in men, but my instincts keep holding me back. We understand not all men, unfortunately, all women have to go through the bad experiences!

Yes I had the same experience. The taxi driver had to detour to avoid the blocked routes for political meeting. That is another topic for another day. Anyway, as he was relying on Google map, he didn’t know where he was driving and many a times reached dead end with no sign of people. I was scared as hell and showed my sort of untrusting with my tone asking him why he was taking such routes. He understood and sound nervous too, then further down he kept asking do you want to go main roads or can I take cut roads. The relief when I reached home- I thanked him for driving me safe. It is all because of some morons and how we are now unconsciously conditioned to prepare for the worst.

I am a man and it happens to me too and that too in an African country, the driver took me to some unwanted routes and I was so scared but he said this is the short cut and you don't worry cos this is not your Ind or pak we don't kidnap you or anything and the other thing was it was raining heavily like hell omg still I can't think of those moments again

Its very glad that you are aggressively concious while in a ride...and you should be proud of it.. even if it was a minor deviation in route you quickly became lert. ..but unfortunately this is what most people miss and in some cases it end up in terrific events.. In my opinion doesn't matter if it is man or women we need to be aggressively alert while we travel even with your own driver .. because the moral values or fabric of society has already crumbled and now what left is to pick up those fallen pieces .. and trust your gut instincts if you are feeling some doubts always better call and alert ur loved ones by sharing ur live location.. I was travelling with my family in Jordan on the way to dead sea resort with my private tour guide in a 7 seater and on the way we agreed to take a different route to visit a coastal city through Aqaba and it was amazing but later the roads were sooooo remote and very narrow lanes and believe me I started alerting my tour operators inside Jordan and one in the country where I reside.. and I started sharing my live locations but they were so supportive and we reached safely .. so its better that we act as per our gut instincts

In 2017 March I hired a taxi at 3 am in the morning at Hyderabad to get to the bus station, to catch the airport bus to go and pick up a friend. The taxi guy asked me where I was going when he realized I was going to the bus station, and when I said my destination was airport, he offered to drop me off at the airport and said it wasn't wise to be at the bus station at odd hours in the morning. I asked him how can I trust him and he said I booked through a legit app and even if he does something to me he won't get away with it easily, and he has a family to think about as well. He asked me to get the maps out on my phone and track the route and do the emergency SOS if I find him deviating from the route at any point. On the way to the airport we talked and he showed me some landmarks which I didn't know about before. He safely dropped me off at the airport and went back.

Dont forget the role of 24×7 news media which repeativively broadcast each and every crime story to stay sensational and contribute to this mass paranoia in society today. Night travel and safety actually was much less in the earlier days due to a lack of night life culture and people especially women made sure they reached home before 7-8.
