(Arcade) Superman - Completed 1 Credit, 1CC 1080p60
I've been really enjoying this game lately, despite slightly clunky controls and the overall cheesiness of the game.
I have recorded several 1CC runs both at home in MAME and at Galloping Ghost Arcade, but I've decided to share this run over much higher scoring runs because it's definitely more interesting to watch.
When playing for score, you will often sit to point press the red re-spawning enemies for as long as you can, until fireballs (Planet Krypton meteors, I like to think) come raining down on you, forcing you forward. While point pressing, using a fully charged (or instant charged) punch will often result in the enemies dropping a yellow or blue crystal.
The yellow is an instant charge punch, blue is health. You can stockpile 10 instant charge punches, but you have to mentally keep track because the game doesn't tell you how many you have. Once you have 10 instant charge punches and/or full health, the extra crystals you pick up are worth 1200 points. While getting all these extra points, you're also refilling your health and getting the instant charge punches, which trivialize some harder parts of the game.
The game is also very generous with extends, giving one at 50k, 150k, then every 150k after. You might need a few of those lives to take out the final boss, as there's not a really reliable way to beat him. I believe I was pretty lucky in this run to have taken him out just as one of his minions depleted my health. I thankfully had a few extra lives in reserve, in any case.
Recorded with wolfMAME v.193 with default settings, my high scoring replay INP is available on MARP if you care to see it:

I remember the corner store near my home had this arcade cabinet for several months and I was obsessed with it. Every quarter I got my hands on I'd stowe away for the week so I could take it to the store to play this. they also rented NES games at that store at the time, and recall thinking the NES game was going to be a port so went ahead and rented it one weekend. Man was I disappointed lol.

Reminds me of Superman 3 movie when they play the Superman game
I made a Superman game for my Sinclair Spectrum 48k when I was a kid. Half written from code in one game, half from what I learned. It was super basic with a crap blocky sprite, the background was just a line mapped to the sine of a sinewave with a next nearest check to keep it drawing a stepped value and not a curve (for mountains) and some awful bleeps. But just over 40 years later I'm a game developer so every journey begins with small steps :)

Fun fact: This game has _never_ been ported in the history of video gaming, ever. Nobody ever bothered including this even in some sort of "Collection" or "Arcade Hits" that were very common in the 90s especially starting on the PS1. An Arcade-accurate port could even have been possible on the SNES or maybe the Genesis; heck even the TurboGraphx-16 might have been enough. The only two ways to play this game today is to: 1) Own the actual arcade cabinet, or 2) Emulate it. This is in my opinion truly a game that would have been effectively forgotten had it not been for Emulation and social media or KZread. The closest thing to this game we ever had was Sunman on NES.
