My Great Grandmother, I had always been told was born in Albania - but her parents both had Italian surnames, spoke Italian, and my Great Grandfather was born in Reggio Calabria. Recently I found out her mother was born in Vaccarrizo Albanese (in Cosenza, Calabria) and her father was born in San Cosmo Albanese (also in Cosenza). Now things make sense as both of these are Arberëshe communities in Calabria - she must have been Arberëshe!

Thanks for putting up this video. I especially like the faces of the people. My great grandfather Gueseppie Pollichino immigrated to Louisiana in 1903. He was Arbëreshë from Contessa Entellina.

Interesting. My Mothers father Nat DiCarlo came here in 1913 and my father's mother came in late 1925,just a few years after her husband,Michel Angelo Scalora.

I find it interesting how "traditional" dresses are such an important part of weak cultural identity in Europe. Obviously these dresses are a conscious fixation that stemmed from XIX century Nationalisms and Romanticism. From Spain to Macedonia, from Norway to Sicily they all look the same. On the other hand I love how language is much more organic and through that different ethnolinguistic groups still strive.

History made a decision which religion we are today,don’t ever let religion make you forget that you were Albanian before you had any religion.We probably started from one tribe.

The song is called "Kur na Arbëreshë" The lyrics: Kur Na Arbëresh ë gjëndëmi bashkë kur dy arbëresh jipen dorin. Skanderbeku vjen ka qielli, vjen e rrí bashkë me ne. E më e bukura kopile Vishet ari vishet si nuse Dora dora me trimin vjen e luan pir Skanderbekun. “Marmi dorin moj vullezra se na jemi gjaku i shprisht”. (x2 ) Këndomi bashkë luami bashkë E kujtomi Skanderbekun. Mos harromi gjuhin tone e mos bjerrmi rritin tonë. Catholic Church, but with Byzantine Rite instead of Latin Rite. Their ancestors were mostly Orthodox Christians from Southern Albania. They were allowed to stay in Italy, as long as they swore to loyal to Catholic Church, but as a compensation, they were permitted to preserve Byzantine Rite, Albanian language, and their ethnic identity.
