The story behind the song, “Could you be Messiah?,” written by Freddie Santos, Gary V’s award-winning stage director and friend. Mr.Santos loves the Lord and often finds himself talking to him (Messiah) whenever, wherever. He was at a bar lounge taking a break from a comedy act rehearsal. It was about 2 p.m. when he felt he needed to write down words that have been running in his mind for a time. He felt strongly about it as if God was telling him to make a song out of it. The problem, he wasn’t a composer. In about 17 minutes, Direk Freddie penned Gary’s most endearing inspirational song that would move the hearts of many to know Jesus. Direk Freddie was in awe writing the lyrics of “Could you be Messiah,” as if he was transcribing divine revelation. Without hesitation, Direk Freddie called Gary out of nowhere and asked if he would consider writing music to the lyrics he just wrote; Gary said yes. When Direk Freddie arrived at Gary’s house, the first thing that Gary said was that he was really busy. Direk Freddie showed Gary the lyrics - he said nothing. Immediately, Gary sat at the piano and tried a few chords or whatever melody he can make out of the few minutes he can spare. Then the mood changed all of a sudden. Gary looked at Direk Freddie and said, “Let’s go upstairs” (Gary’s studio is the attic). They went up around 5 p.m. and didn’t come down until 5 a.m. Gary was glued to his keyboards the whole time and finished putting melody to the lyrics. From time to time, Gary pricked his fingertips so he could measure his sugar level. He has a diabetes. But because the words moved his soul, Gary gave it all. The same fingers pounded the keyboards seconds after. His fingers hurt, but he couldn’t stop. Gary looked at Direk Freddie. Could you be Messiah is a beautiful piece recorded in 1991 that is still played and sung all over. It takes talent and vocal dexterity to interpret the song. Gary Valenciano sings it raw in August 2020 until Gary's decided to pass this song to Morissette to sang it. Note: There're two videos has upload at KZread. I might add...this was used in a play by the name, First Name that Santos staged...he passed away in 2020 , and to honor him ,the play was revised.....using the name...First Name, Anew and streamed online in 2021. Gary V wanted this song presented by a female voice and due to Mori's strong beliefs, refreshed by husband Dave Lamar ( son of Missionaries that run an Orphanage for abused and forgotten children) she was his first pick. It was a very emotional shoot for all involved.

As a Catholic and a Christian, I do admire people who immerse themselves in religion but not to the point that they become zealots and look down on people who don't share their core values. This is the difference between practicing your faith and living it (i.e., being kind, compassionate, humble, and all other qualities that treat others with dignity and respect) as opposed to being Christians in name only. And there are a lot of them in the US (and possibly in other countries of the world as well) who espouse Christian nationalism who spew hate and bigotry!

I always listen to this song,morissette is an amazing singer!

Let me add a little personal context. Knowing the back story behind this song by Morissette that Gary Valenciano approached to her to perform.....you'll understand how personal it is to her. at 22, her father basically gave her a choice....her romance with Dave Lamar or her family. She and Dave had been very close friends since 2012...and dated a few years later...then broke up, but in 2018 got back together. Her father, who had controlled much of her career , promoting her, felt Dave might be using her to further his own writing and singing career.....and once she choose Dave.....Father stopped talking to her in 2019 , and forbid Mother or Brother to either. Her family didn't even attend Dave and her wedding on 6/21. If you watch the Messiah video, you see metaphors about her struggles and love for her family throughout Freddie Santos's words. This is why she is crying.....she isn't acting......she's deep into her soul. I believe this was recorded right before their wedding or thereabouts. How someone can take a personal experience like that and still perform with precision at that level is pretty amazing.

You have a deep understanding of a very emotional performance, like this. When Mori performs, emotion is an integral part of her song: you would feel the essence of what she does, her emotional attachment to the message of her song. That is mainly her signature quality aside from the dynamics of her vocals, and, of course, the so many musical bits ad pieces you don't normally hear from most of the singers around. Wow! thank you for reacting to Mori's rendition of this song. I love and appreciate the thoughts you shared. I am not privy to Mori's deep struggles but I know she has gone through a lot. Very personal. Very deep and painful. Yeah, she knew God (most Filipinos do), but I believe that it was only the past few years that she has know Him personally and intimately. I can imagine her playing some of her struggles while singing thing song and finding comfort in the fact that all questions might not be answered... all relationships might not be restored completely... all prayers not answered as preferred, her only hope is in God. And yeah, as you said, songs like this enable the singer to convey her heart fully. God bless you sir!
