Kaspars Sarmulis then tell me, the mighty human, what does it mean to be independent when your economy is controlled by other countries, when youe military serves for protecting goverment not latvian citizens, when your politicians execute orders from Brussels, when those orders are - close your schools, you can't afford it, close your hospitals, you can't afford it and so on. when your tax payers pay for goverment luxury, when your health care is as bad as it can be, when 300 000 people have left this so independent country, now there is only 1,9m people left in this country and there is still 13% unemployment rate. so if this is your independence you should really google what does independence really means

The song is translated literally but not well from Latvian. For English speakers it is more like this: Latvia the beautiful land where the earth and sky meet; it was blessed by the Gods with green forests and white waters. It was guarded by the Daugava River which was the key. But it was taken by enemies who stormed the gate. They let the key be lost. Perkons with his mighty blue lightening and hammer of thunder got it back from invaders from from hell and gave it back, the white sea and green earth. The sun god Saule created Latvia on the white sea and we asked him for more, we asked him to give us drink beyond the white sands. So the sun asked Perkons to make the river Daugava from the work of all the animals and he poured the water that flowed into it from the clouds. Now you can feel all of life in the flow of the Daugava, death and life, I can feel it in my soul. It is everything, life and death. Now we can feel the power in our soul. The sun shown on our troubles and cared for us. The god of thunder was our father and struck down those who oppressed us. A poet might do a better job - but this is closer,

Next thursday, 11th september, catalans commemorate the loss of our freedoms in 1714. Last year we made a 1.5 million people human chain, taking the example of the baltics one, in 1989. And this year we'll make a giant V, along the two main roads in Barcelona, The V refers to "VOTE". Most catalans want to hold an independence referendum but the spanish government has forbidden it. For catalans the support of people like you Latvians is very encouraging. Best wishes from Catalonia
