Aquilasax C-Soprano saxophone - My Love and I - Theme from "Apache" - Runyon Custom

Normally I do this on tenor :-) Aquila C-Sop is a fine horn. I'm still fighting with the mouthpiece a little bit.
Aquilasax C-Soprano
Mouthpiece: Runyon Custom #9 with spoiler
Reed: Rico Plasticover 2 1/2
Saxophone: Michael Ausserbauer

    Hi, I like the Runyon a lot. And it gives a beautiful sound - as all Runyon Customs can do. Decided to put it on my Bb straight sop. Got one for almost all my horns. You definitely can't go wrong with a Runyon Custom. The tune is indeed a standard but very seldomly played.

    Hi, this horn acts like nearly any modern soprano. Intonation isn't really an issue if you got accustomed to it. Pitched higher than the Bb soprano it requires quite a firm embouchure - and of course a decent mouthpiece :-)

    @mattissurf: I use both Fibracell and Legere on alto, tenor and bari. These are good reeds. Hard to tell which of both is better. I settled on Fibracell for tenor and alto mostly because of economical reasons.

    Hi, you can play the Custom without the spoiler. Makes it much smoother. The low notes are not really a problem and 2 1/2 or so gives excellent control. The Custom is a very docile mouthpiece. Yes, I do play subtone here - but because it's a ballad and I like that breathy sound. The mouthpiece speaks clearly a full throttle as well. Had no problems. But you know: We are all hunting for the perfect mouthpiece, don't we ;-)

    ... nice. Keep thinking one day I'll have to try a soprano. Been playing tenor for about a year now, ready for an upgrade from my Yamaha 4C mouthpiece. Planning on mail ordering a Runyon custom soon, you sound like you're a bit out on the fence with the Runyon ? Perhaps just for the soprano. ... anyway,not heard this piece before, very lovely, must be a well known standard.

    @0bluemike I'm a beginner, but I have a good experience with my tenor and Legere Signature #2 and Otto Link NY 7*. Rounder sound than the Fibracell. The Legere is to me pretty close to Vandoren Java Green #2.

    Hi, the Runyon Custom MPCs are superb. They come with a spoiler which you can insert and which gives you a brighter sound. But even without they are very fine mouthpieces: Easy to control, well made and very responsive. I'm not sure if they are still available. If so, give them a try.

    Excuse me, a friend of mine is selling this mouthpiece, I have played soprano for at least 5 years, but never tried a mouthpiece this bright, I wonder if it doesn't become impossible to control the low E zone with this ? to avoid warble, 2 1/2 + guarantees good control ? you play low notes but it sounds like you're fixing them with a subtone. Thanks.

    Is this mouthpiece designed for the C soprano, or is it the same as a Bb soprano mouthpiece? Does it use the same reeds as a Bb soprano?

  • @MichaelAusserbauer

    @MichaelAusserbauer

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi, the mouthpiece is an ordinary Bb mouthpiece. Therefore I'm using the standard Bb reeds. The C-Soprano is closer to the Bb version than to the Sopranino. The Bb mpcs work quite well. Most of them. The smaller the chamber the better they work.

    @@MichaelAusserbauer Yes, it seems that they are out of business. The only "new" C Soprano saxophones I know are those of IWC (International Woodwind, Hollywood, California, USA), designed by Benedikt Eppelsheim (Germany) and Schiller (American distributor of Chinese instruments). The first one may cost about §3500,-, the latter §269. Therefore I am in big trouble because I cannot afford the expensive one and I wonder if the cheap one is playable at all. I would order the Schiller and import it to Germany, but would you buy an instrument unseen?

  • @MichaelAusserbauer

    @MichaelAusserbauer

    @@medialex78 The Schiller is a children C-Soprano if this is what I've seen from their website. It misses a lot of keys essential to normal playing. I wouldn't really recommend it other than for a child (and even that's debatable). Look for a vintage C-Sop on ebay USA. There are always some popping up from time to time. The old ones weren't so bad but most likely need to be overhauled.

    @@MichaelAusserbauer Thank you so much for that quick advice. We could also have corresponded in German but I wanted to share this with more people here... More thean 15 years ago I ordered a vintage Wurlitzer C-Sop in silver with inner golden bell on eBay that was supposedly overhauled. But when I asked a woodwind technician to have a look at it he found out that many pads would have to be replaced. Therefore I returned it and thought about to acquire an Aquilasax instead.
