This giant reptile enclosure was on display at Aquashella Dallas. It's part aquarium, part terrarium, all paludarium. The tank measures six feet across, five feet tall, and two feet front to back.
It's home to a caiman lizard, one of the few semi-aquatic lizards in the world. In the wild they hunt mainly snails, so they can co-exist peacefully with tropical fish.
The enclosure was built by Custom Aquariums and the hardscape in the tank was created by Universal Rocks.

I understand the need for the artificial larger items because of the weight etc. but would love to see it jammed full of live plants etc ... expensive but would be an awesome "dream" project.... LOVE the lizard!!! 💖

Having a version of this with all real rock and plants would be an awesome permanent piece, like built into the wall or something, with a maintenance room behind it. But that's pretty big doing right there!!

I go to Dallas a couple of times a year for the big Dog Shows downtown. Is the Reptarium very far from that area ?

@@Deepbluhuntr It's north of downtown Dallas in Plano so maybe about 30 or so minutes not far at all.
this was an amazing video to see. I kept aquariums for about 10 years with 6 aquariums. I always dreamt of a paludarium, but never worked up to it. This video truly shows what is possible in the aquarium world.
Tip.... keep an eye out for large display cases made of glass, they can often be used with little to no modifications depending on the type of case you find. Example I bought a display case 7' wide 2.5'deep and 3' tall with glass on all sides except the bottom and the back which was actually 2 mirrors on sliders to access inside. It cost me $200 at an auction and less than $100 to modify it to hold water on one side with a built in drain. I then mounted clamp lights where the adjustable shelf supports where, added plants and my water dragon loved it for over a decade.

this channel is a HIDDEN GEM. the narration, the editing and the overall content is just amazing
Great video, I've seen this tank featured in a number of vids from people at aquashella but thank you for a very in depth and cinematic feature on this incredible paludarium. Also really enjoyed that other one you featured and referred back to in this video, that one is one of my favorites and more my style personally. I really want to try to build one of these some day and looking forward to seeing that project you and your friend are working on. Again thanks for sharing Alex!
The caiman lizard is such an eloquent reptile that looks like something straight out of a sci-fi film 😍
Thank you for doing coverage on this paludarium! I wasn't able to get a close look at it at Aquashella because of the massive crowds, but it was definitely an amazing setup.
Wow they look magnificent when they swim. Your water is so clear and the plants are beautiful. That room is heaven
This is beautiful, wish i had the space and cash for this and just do my zoom/ms teams meetings with it in the background.
Also I love this video and tank! I'm a huge fan of custom aquariums and the work that they're able to do! I do plan on getting one of their tanks in the future!
I think the door frames makes it look like three tanks stacked together.
That’s too cool! I can’t imagine the work hours that goes into a setup like this. It would be an amazing project to work on!
Best caiman lizard footage

Pretty closely related to tegus. I'm planning an enclosure for one, which is what brought me here. This looks a little small, but I'm interested in how well it coexists with that frog and those fish, and I'm curious how long they all lived together for, with what kind of problems.
Beautiful just stunning
Amazing video!!! Extremely inspirational and i love your work! Dont let anyone put you down!
Absolutely beautiful work of living art
Impressiv tank, thank you for this video
That's an awesome set up and an even cooler lizard! Love it!
This is beautiful! Also caiman lizards are my absolute dream reptile! I would love to set up a whole huge setup on it like you would see on a zoo.
Love the set up!
Caiman Lizards are so beautiful and fascinating. I first saw them at Brookfield Zoo and was immediately infatuated with them. They have extremely specialized diets (snails) and environmental requirements (Very large semi-aquatic) making them unsuitable for keeping outside of the most experienced keepers. I still enjoy seeing them either way. :)
Beautiful tank for a beautiful lizard
The most beautiful aquarium I have ever seen so far

I saw another video that gave a tiny glompse of this set-up. So, I appreciated the full tour & especially the explanation of the lizard. Thank you.
i own a caiman lizard and they are def a more aggressive but one of the the coolest most unique lizards ive ever seen
This is so beautiful that I was just like, STUCK watching. Lol.
That was a very relaxing video.
This has to be heaven for these animals. Easy food and no spending their lives in fear of predators
I just saw a few of those caiman lizards for the first time at some hole in the wall reptile store last week. They were about twice the size as the one in this video and look amazingly exotic!!
Love caiman lizards!

Dang that lizard and that tank they both are soooo beautiful such a perfect combo👌
2:21 is sooo oddly satisfying Also I think there is another Godzilla-like creature out there- the Borneo Earless Monitor lizard I believe.
Wow that lizard is awesome I want one I live in Kingman Arizona and I see all kinds of different lizards when I take walks certain areas it's so awesome
This thing in person is amazing
Great vid! That aquatic Lizard is amazing!
So incredibly cool and unique. I will say though even considering how amazing the setup is on it's own , without the camin lizard it just doesnt have that wow factor. He is definitely needed. Just my opinion.
I made something like this in the early 2000. I used wood, artificial plants, and I also made a waterfall. I also kept a lot of feeder fish, they also bred, for my pet water snake which I built the palladium for.
An aquatic lizard AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Great channel, great lector ...

Double in size? That’s an understatement, those lizards can get up to 4-5 feet!
This lizard is straight chilling
Your fish tank is so cool
Wow I wanna make this, but with a caiman lizard and a crocodile skink, a perfect duality
Subscribed cuz his voice soothed my headache lol
This is just insane
this is gorgeous.
Lit. I want to get a custom cage for parrots, most likely tropical lovelies, Kakarikis are favorites.
It looks awesome 😍
You could give me a chair, food, water and this terrarium and i'd be intertained for the rest of my life. The way caiman lizards move is just so mafical really, just gliding thru the water almost effortless.
jesus that's damn pretty awesome. how beautiful
3 sides are awesome , and more comfort for the animals . I have 2 medium exo's with 5 juvie garters in each one with the 3 sides , they are way calmer in that , opposed to the one with just a back drop . With that one, they have 3 sides clear that they wish to go thru constantly .
Youre doing it right
Such an amazing setup!
this is one of my goal in the hobby.
Damn that’s pretty cool. I grew up in Dallas and never heard of any of these
I would definitely want all 3 sides decorated. I would ask custom aquariums if they could maybe make a single sliding, removable, shatter-resistant glass door. Like one of those hurricane proof sliding doors.
i love 4/20 for allowing me to find this
Caiman Lizards are awesome , a lot like Tegus .
Pretty cool
Greets from Switzerland
sick af
you could keep the side backdrop and have doors if you make them swing open instead of slide
A lizard swimming in the tank 🦎🌊🏖🏝🏞
so beautiful. awesome
that is awesome
In many, many years I dream to have a caiman lizard. They are beautiful but extremely expensive and very hard to upkeep, so right now is not the time.
Damn this is soo nice!!!!! 💙
caiman lizard paludarium??? what a tremendous!
That's not a paluderium but its a heaven 😍😍😍
For a caiman lizard you would for sure want a glass top with maybe 20% screen in the top back.
