    Couldn't agree more. Great information. My ph is 8.2 in my tap and all my tanks. No problems because it is stable. I keep a range of fish everything from a betta to a jack dempsey. Also have a community tank and several goldfish. Everybody is healthy and thriving

    Travis great video when I first started in the hobby I was a PH chaser. Using all the products and was very stressful for me. I believe I lost a lot of fish because of that. I will say I learned a lot about PH and knew how to change it to a particular reading.Now I just keep it at what my water is out of the faucet around 7.6. My fish and tank have done amazing since I quit chasing. I do understand on some species they have to have certain PH reading to prosper. Great explanation My man.

    Thank you so very much for putting my mind at ease. The shop we buy our fish from (UK) have even tried to get us to buy water to solve the problem, but now after listening to you, I see we’re only a minimal amount below and our Odessas and 1 Plec are very happy. We’ve purposefully not bought any more lately as we’ve been frightened to! A few more fish will now be joining ours, with a gradual addition to the water as I always do before putting them in. I’d sooner take 1 & 1/2 hours and add 3 - 4 small amounts of tank water so they acclimatise before putting them in the tank. Bless you for helping me feel far happier now. ❤️

I would like to add more driftwood to my 80 litre (20 gallon) community tank,, but my PH and GH are lower than I'm comfortable with; therefore, I was looking for confirmation on using crushed coral to increase both. To be completely honest I don't know how well that would work out, I have pretty bad social anxiety so talking to people face to face is a little difficult sometimes especially if I don't know them, I find KZread a very easy platform to teach on because I'm not talking to anybody specifically while I'm making the video I'm just talking out loud to a camera, so it's definitely an issue that I know I have and I've been working on it and getting better so we'll see what the future brings 😁

    I appreciate the explanation of how crushed coral helps raise ph. I have a turtle tank that after a good cleaning (was actually a bad thing) and cycling the tank, I can't get the water back to neutral for some reason. I used to have fish in the tank too so I'm shooting for a more tolerable environment for all residents.

    A Platy died overnight. Did water quality check. Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0- 40. Ph 6. I was going to the shops to get the pH up solution but your vid helped so much! FYI - I have numerous Platy (including fry), 2 newly bought Dwarf Gouramis, three bronze Cory's (1newly introduced - bought with the dwarf g's), a mystery snail and a bristlenose catfish. The platy dying was the first fish I've lost for a long time. Maybe it was the intro of the new fish? Any way with your vid, I'm sticking with 6 as my pH. 🙂

    Hi, I'm a year into becoming a fish keeper and lover! Lol I'm upgraded my 30 gal to a 45-50 gal actually within the week but i have right now 4 black skirt tetras, 1 eastern rainbow fish, 1 Buenos Ares, 1 clown loach, 1 algae eater, 1 molly, 1 platy, and 1 dwarf flame gourami in my 30 gal. I'm wanting more hence the upgraded tank size tho not too many more by any means. Lol i checked my water today and I'm still new mind you on the whole water thing but my ph is high and my nitrates was high with hard water around 400 +. I live in Indiana central and i only have the lil generic test strips. Everything else is great tho. Clear water with Unger gravel filters and aqua tech hang over back filter. I did a 75% water change last week and everything's been great till about 2 days ago. Fish are great, active, eating with no changes at all to the way they act or swim. I Will add aquarium salt (small amount tho) when i water changes which is 25-30% once a week to 2 weeks depending on my hectic schedule with a 50-60% change once a month or so. Had to do the 75-80% change roughly tho due to my own 'butter fingers' and dropped a full container of food in tank! Lol anyways my question is is should i be worried about how high and unsafe the nitrate and ph are? I'm going to an aquatic store later today tho to buy a better water testing kit just because my lil ones are worth it and i don't want to lose any of them. Any advice would be great. I have pictures of my tank at the time I'm posting this comment/question if anyone should need to see the tank or water or whatever tho that id gladly share! Lol thanks so much for all your info and your other videos and speaking in my lingo! I'm subscribing to your channel now!!! 👍🙏😁🐟🐠 oh yeah i don't have any live plants as well... I personally don't like them but really don't have too much extra time to keep em trimmed and all that other stuff... I love my colorful 'gaudy' (as one has put it before) decorations! Again thank you and thanks to any help i can get from you or anyone else here!

  • @TrafishAquatics

    @TrafishAquatics

    Once you get your new test kit let me know what the actual readings for pH and nitrate are and I'll be able to help you out a little bit better, but generally speaking as long as you have a stable pH it's better to leave the pH alone and let the fish acclimate to it and rather than chase numbers, As far as nitrate goes you want to try and keep nitrate under 40 ppm, nitrate in high levels can be toxic to fish, It's best to try and get yourself on a routine to do weekly water changes of about 25 to 30% depending on how high your nitrates actually are. I know you said you don't like the life plants but something you may consider is floating plants because they will help consume nitrate and instead of having to go in and trim them you can just scoop them out with a net and either sell them, give them away, or throw them away. But like I said let me know what your readings are when you get back later

    Hello ..questions …how do you introduce the Indian leaves into your freshwater tank to lower the ph…i have started 2 ten gallons and the ph is almost a blueish/purple color straight from my house water faucet… the water has been in the tank for 2 days now all set up just at that waiting period to add fish (in a couple days ..im not in a hurry) so i want to start a tropical freshwater tanks and get the tank to a greenish color .. so i go on amazon and buy the leaves …..than what do I do??? it gets confusing cause some people say boil the leaves than put in tap water than into your tank.. than someone else said put into a bottle water over night ….ugggg lol so unsure what to do.. i want to do things naturally.. and not mess with ph up and down chemicals… im also watching videos on seachem products for the benefits of the nutritional value and supplement value in the tank…i want happy fishes… how do you feel bout the seachem products?? Also was told watch out for you tubers out there trying to push the seachem products because a lot of the products aren’t needed…but i did order seachem Prime also flourish (i have live plants)…pristine..stress guard and stability water conditioner… on order at Amazon ..so nothing is in the tank as far as product yet….one more thing do you like pellets or flakes for food..thanks in advance for any help you can offer to me… have a great day..

    I added a Cyprus knee that I've had for about 20 years. It sat outside for the past 3 years, then I boiled it for 2 hours and it had a ton of tannins still in it. I have it in the tank and it's floating for the past two months. It just wont sink, but I kind of like having a piece of floating food in there because my fish like to hide around it and eat the algae that grows on it from being close to the light. I am going to try crushed coral because my fish store has hard water and I have a water conditioner on my house water, so its super soft. I have a question. I have a sand substrate and I like it, but I bought some fluval stratum substrate and want to put a little on one side of the tank for my Amazon sword plants to grow in. I am using root tabs in the sand for them right now. I dont want to mess up the fish - how would I go about adding that stratum without messing up the tank and the fish? Should I soak it for a few weeks in a separate tank without fish?

    Ok so I'm new to fish keeping. I have goldfish. My test today said 9 yikes. We're on a well. No nitrates no nitrites. However, I'm worried about my babies. If I put driftwood or peetmoss yea? It will bring down the pH but, ugly brown colour. Isn't there anything else besides buying an expensive reverse osmosis filter? Thx for your help.

    I've got L066 Pleco. For breeding Google searches say, I need kh 4-6 degrees, and a ph of 6.5-7.0 I want to maintain kh to prevent ph swings. But when I change ph from 7.5 to 7.0... my kh reads zero. When my kh reads zero, I experience ph fluctuations. My tank ran out of kh, and ph went to 4.0 crashing my tank. How do I maintain kh levels in acidic water? Im new to the hobbie, and completely baffled. If I achieve an acidic 6.5ph, will the lack of kh cause fluctuations? I see breeders recommend 6.5ph soft water changes. How do you keep a stable ph of 6.0 or 6.5 with zero kh? Atm my ph is 7.7-7.8 and 1-2 dkh The LFS recommend ph7.5, but at ph7.5 my kh is almost reading zero. Very close to another ph crash. 4-6dkh is around ph8.0 I'm assuming now... I should add plenty of crushed coral. Water change at the recommended ph6.5 to encourage breeding,, and will the crushed coral slowly increase my ph back to 7.7-7.8? My LFS says I'm looking into this too deeply. But there's no kh in my tap water. How do you maintain kh 4-6degrees, without spiking ph to 8.0 and above?

    Its possible depending on your water change schedule (ammonia cam lower ph), if you have driftwood it can lower it also, the higher your kh is the easier your tank will buffer the lowering ph back up to where you want it, you can use crushed coral to help this if need be

I was planning on getting Pygmy Corydoras and cardinal tetra's and so I used PH down to try and get the optimal 7.0 PH, but i tested the water again after use and my PH has bounced back to 8.0. My water ph is about 6, so when I do water changed I add a little of the “Proper PH 7.5” from API and that works great. When I use the chemicals my ph rebounds after a few days but the proper ph powder doesn’t seem to do that.

  • @TrafishAquatics

    @TrafishAquatics

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's because the pH powder also adds kh which adds buffering capacity to the pH. The chemicals don't provide this which is why it doesn't hold. This is also achievable with baking soda and crushed coral.

    The one thing I dont quite get yet is the use of co2 for plants. my tap water is 8.8. most plants do horrible in my tank with tap water. I started doing co2 and noticed that at night when everything is off, the water is roughly 8.4, however when the co2 comes on and saturates the water my water can drop over a few hours to 6.5ish. I use light surface agitation to keep O2 good for the fish. My fish have been just fine like this for like 5 months now. I slowly adjusted the co2 to the level its at now. the plants are all booming. my question is, should i invest into a small r/0 unit to get my tank water starting at 7 so i can use less co2 to get it down to 6-6.5? i can start doing small water changes each week replacing like 5 gals at a time with r/o water? this is in a 75 gal that has two over powered canister filters on it so isn't co2 basically chasing ph as it flops from 8.8 to 6.5 on a daily basis?

  • @TrafishAquatics

    @TrafishAquatics

    Жыл бұрын

    Correct, co2 will cause your ph to read more acidic and then will come back up after jt gasses off or is used, i think if what you are doing is working i wouldnt change anything

    Yep just add a little crushed coral to get that ph up, the ammonia spike is probably because the pH got too low and you had some bacterial die off. Bacteria has a hard time living in ph 6.0 and lower

    Very informative video! straight to the point! Currently I have a 55 gallon community tank with small tropical fishes from with Neons, Danios, Guppies, Cory, Honey Gourami and Amano Shrimps and I agree that keeping the pH stable is more important than chasing the numbers, but I've noticed some of my neons are dying while others are doing fine. Do you recommend if I use API pH down to bring the pH to a more neutral level ? And if I use that, would that do more harm then good since the result would be so fast where the fish cant adapt and becomes stressed out. Or do you recommend I let the community adapt to my pH ? my current pH is around 8.2

  • @TrafishAquatics

    @TrafishAquatics

    3 жыл бұрын

    Neons do prefer a slightly lower pH, also I found if you don't have any tannins in your water neons tend to have a little bit of a harder time, If you add some natural driftwood to your aquarium it will lower your pH as well as add tannins and then your neon should be fine afterwards
