April Wine Ranking All 16 Studio Albums

Музыка

I am going out on a limb here and doing my second ever personal ranking of a band's catalogue. I'm really hooked on April Wine after covering their first ten albums, and I recently watched a lot of videos with folks discussing April Wine's catalogue. So, I got inspired to make my own video.
I hope you can sit through the whole thing.

    Great video. Lots of thought and consideration put into this! I don’t know all of April Wine’s discography but I do enjoy a lot of their seventies output. As a fan of blues, I’m intrigued by the bottom of your list - I don’t think of blues when I think of April Wine. I’ll need to check it out. My favorites (that I’ve heard are) are “the whole worlds goin’ crazy”, “stand back”, and “nature of the beast”.

    Hey, I was just thinking about you a little earlier while I was walking and listening to music. I thought I should pop over and see what you’ve got up recently. Roughly Speaking is a good album. The songs and music are good! It’s just a very curious way for April Wine to finish their studio career. Was it intended to be a brief detour? You might like it. And it’s not all blues. Your favourites are among the commonly cited as favourites. April Wine were surely at their peak from 1974-1982 with the one exception of Myles’s solo album being labeled an April Wine album. Thanks for watching and your compliments! I’ll be stopping by your way during the day here sometime.

    Thank you so much, Steve! I really thought it was way too long and I started recording a shorter version. But I’ve received some encouraging comments from a few people. So I think I’ll leave it as is and just try to make future videos a bit briefer. Doing the first ten albums videos has really been a great excuse to listen to albums I haven’t heard in years or even decades. It’s good to enjoy the music again, perhaps even more, and be glad for the money spent on the albums.

    Interesting....you refer to me (on Grant's show); we really agree on Frigate and Roughly Speaking, on Forever For Now, you are correct, I really enjoy all the songs.....but I also really liked the journey into different types of music (Country, Calypso etc....). Also, the ballads on that album (Child's Garden, Come Away & Marjorie are all excellent....IMO).

    Hi, David! Thanks for your comment. I don't recall what I said exactly in this video about Forever For Now, but I have warmed up to the songs a little more. Knowing the meaning behind Child's Garden, I listen more carefully now and enjoy the song. Yes, the variety is good, but the album still lacks the hard rock punch that their other albums have.

    have to admit not a band I'm familiar at all, but listened to a few tracks before watching your video. not sure they're for me. probably need to listen to a few complete albums first. a couple of the artists you mentioned (Frank Marino and Triumph) I saw back in 1981 at a day long festival headlined by Motörhead. Also on the bill was Ozzy complete with Randy Rhoads playing his first ever UK show. What an absolute privilege to be able to say we (my girlfriend at the time) and I were there 🙂

    Well, first of all, thank you for watching in spite of the band failing to grasp your interest thus far. I have started a second version of this ranking aiming to cut the time in half. I was going to remove this long video from the public setting. But two new comments tell me people are at least watching and feeling like commenting. Thank you! I’ve known of April Wine since 1984, bought my first album in the nineties, and only within the last ten years did I begin taking more interest in the band. Now finally I have the bug and I’ve purchased the last of the albums I was missing. So, you may or may not find something you can get into. That show you saw! I’m envious! What a lineup!

    I really enjoy the longer form factor Peter. It shows the amount of work and dedication you put into your videos. So what I say if fewer people watch them. At least those that do are watching for the right reasons and because they enjoy you and your style. I enjoy smaller channels as I feel like I'm just having a chat with a mate. No sales pitch, no sponsors, just a good old chat🙂 That show was in August 1981 at Port Vale's football round here in the UK. My GF and I were only 17 at the time, but were already experienced concert goers! The show was about a 5 hour trip from our home town though, and after getting trains and buses to get there, we had no idea how we were getting home. How our respective parents let us get away with this I don't know. Anyway, after the show (the line up was Vardis, Riot (who were superb), Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Triumph, Ozzy and then Motörhead) we luckily bumped into a friend who'd travelled up by coach and said there was room if we wanted to sneak back on while he distracted the driver - which we duly did, and got home around 5am the next day!! Out of interest, the show was supposed to be headlined by Sabbath, with Motorhead in support. But they pulled out for some reason (recording commitments I think was the excuse) and Ozzy stepped in at the last minute. It was a hell of a day with rival biker gangs fighting, bottles of p!ss being thrown about the place and general mayhem. It was great!! Sorry to bore you with such a long comment - I get carried away easily! I've got a video on my channel about my early live music experiences if you're interested 🙂@@musicisajourney

    I really appreciate your comment. I felt this video was way too long. I was going to remove from public viewing and put up a shorter version. The first sentence of your comment makes me feel a bit better. Each time I listen to Animal Grace, I feel it is a very strong album. I just wish the guitars sounded better. Power Play’s production blows this out of the water. Back to the Mansion doesn’t have as many really solid tracks, in my opinion, but it sounds much better, I think. And as I think I said, I’ve really been enjoying the latter output recently. In fact, I like Roughly Speaking more now than when I recorded the video on the weekend. Your top four could be mine too. If I listen to any album these days, I like it better than I remembered liking it before.

    Definitely enjoyed seeing this. Listened to Harder, Faster a while ago along with songs from a bunch of the other albums. I think I'm getting a feel for them, though I don't know that I really enjoy all the styles they play. Never been a big fan of "boogie" rock -- though it sounds good on a piano! Luckily as you point out there is a lot of variety in their sound. I know this is hard to do and of course in a few months your perspective might change, but these are definitely the sort of ranking things I like, where a person just gives their own opinion and perspective while talking about the albums. Also the way you talked about that 1985 album really made me laugh. I'll have to check out Attitude, but I don't really know why a band like April Wine would look to CInderella or Poison or Great White for inspiration. That just seems odd and out of place. Maybe it's because I'm a 90s teen but while I love NWOBHM, classic heavy metal, US power metal from the 80s (Manilla Road is my favourite metal band and Voivod is very close), I never got into that scene at all and don't really get what the fuss was all about mostly. I don't include bands that got their start earlier and actually sound great (to me), like Van Halen, in among those bands.

  • @musicisajourney

    @musicisajourney

    I agree with you that boogie rock doesn’t impress. There are songs that are great, but more often than not, I feel turned off. Fortunately, April Wine’s albums nearly always include some hard and something heavy. Now I’m in the mood where I can accept just about anything by the band. But I know that it will pass and a few months from now I’ll just have a playlist of favourites I’ll still not tire of. Honestly, I fell out of interest with glam metal around 85/86. Again, there were still cool songs, but whole albums didn’t satisfy me. Attitude might not exactly be a glam metal album, but the style of so many of the songs really reminds me of music from that era. And it’s done really well by a “new face” to the glam scene, a familiar new face, that I actually really enjoy most of the songs. The production is really sharp too. Ah, Manila Road. I have their Invasion album. It’s really interesting! I’ve been meaning to get that Crystal one. I think they are a band that should be interesting. Thank you for you kind remark at the beginning. I feel better about having posted such a long video!

  • @DamnableReverend

    @DamnableReverend

    Yeah, i still will check out Attitude at some point anyway. Case by case basis and you never know ... soome bands just impress in unexpected ways. Invasion is a cool album, but it's very much the first steps. It makes me think a lot of Rocka Rolla from Judas Priest. not that the albums are *that* similar, but just in terms of being kind of the formative and possibly even tentative example of the sound. I actually quite like Rocka Rolla for what it is and I like Invasion too. What I like even more is their would-be second album, Dreams of Eschaton (also known as Mark of the Beast), not actually legitimately released until 2003 but recorded in 1981. That one's very dreamy and psychedelic. After that they recorded the album simply entitled Metal, released in 1982, and the title was a plainly-stated indication of where they wanted to go from there. Anyway, yes, awesome band for me, pretty much everything I like about metal plus a strong dose of individual eccentricity and sword and sorcery! I definitely like the long videos. I put on youtube while I'm doing stuff around the house like making dinner, so I just like to let it play, although I don't always watch all in one go. Thanks again for cool and interesting music talk. @@musicisajourney

    @@DamnableReverend I guess if you were never immersed in the glam scene, Attitude might have some exciting tracks. I feel Emotional Dreams sounds like it could have been written for Walking Through Fire but was giving a proper production to make it sound really good! I know what you mean about Invasion. I like it because I think it’s an American band ignoring or oblivious to the trends in the U.K. and creating their own take on 1980 heavy metal (they mention “heavy metal” in the lyrics of one song) and I think with bands like early Manila Road, Sorcery, and Fiords, the U.S. could have developed a very different trend of heavy rock. But the NWOBHM dropped, and those bans either disappeared or switched their style. I’m very curious now about that second album that wasn’t released until later. But I also need to check out other MR albums too. These days I actually play these kinds of videos in my car while I drive to the supermarket or home centre. I just listen and hear what people have to say. So I can imagine you getting housework done while listening.

  • @DamnableReverend

    Yeah, I really wasn't immersed in it at all. Until I was about 11 in 1991 I thought all rock music made after the early 1970s was automatically bad. Then I discovered The Black Crowes, who were a popular band that I could get behind, probably because they made me think of the Rolling Stones and maybe CCR and some southern rock bands (though I don't think I was really conscious of what southern rock was at the time). i went from there to pearl jam and Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, and then metallica and iron maiden and Judas Priest. I was completely unaware of the glam scene and only listened to any of those bands after the fact. beleive it or not I don't even remember hearing Motley Crue until the late 90s. The guy who introduced me to the Black Crowes was into Guns 'n' Roses, so I knew them, but never liked them enough to get any albums, just taped a few songs off the radio. I don't think I know the band Fiords, but what you said reminded me of another American band of the time, Legend, and their album "From the Fjords", which is awesome! And got noticed by almost nobody it seemed. manilla Road kept going and attained a cult following and by the time I discovered them around 2001, the time was right for them! I saw them live three times or saw and had the chacne to interview Mark Shelton for several hours. he said one influence from the Invasion days was for sure Caress of Steel from Rush, and i can definitely hear it. Mark of the Beast/Dreams of Eschaton is awesome, and a really different kind of Road, with a lot of slow songs, clean guitar, pretty emotional singing and long, winding solos -- sort of like an entire album in the style of "The Empire" from invasion, only even better than that sounds. The albums get heavier after that until 1988 when they made pretty much a thrash album. Stuff after that is different and plays around with different heavy styles, but maintains the epic grandeur. Really magnificent band and I miss mark Shelton very much -- the first and only musician death to affect me on a very personal level. yes, this is also why I hate youtube trying to push shorts on me haha....I want to just let it play for a while and not be disturbed or have to change anything. This is why I like the ranking videos, first ten album series, etc, along with your informative background and personal views @@musicisajourney

    I will admit that my opinion has changed since making this video. I revisited the album not as an April Wine album but just as an album of songs. I found I appreciated the music a lot more. Child’s Garden is much better than I first thought, and You Won’t Dance with Me has charm. And Mama Layne is also good. But even still, had this not been an April Wine album, I wouldn’t have bought it. Also, as an April Wine album, it still sticks out from their catalogue as a head-scratcher. Why would they - rising to a peak in their hard rock career - release and album like this? So I think it’s much better appreciated on its own. Like a Lover Like a Song is a great ballad, but it does not appear on the Canadian release of Forever for Now. It’s from The Whole World’s Going Crazy.
