I love how basically everyone in the Parks department adopted April and Andy. And in turn April and Andy adopted Ethel Beavers as their grandma.

April's great. Aubrey Plaza and the writers did a great job with the character. It could have easily become one-note, "I don't care about anything", but her enjoyment of messing with people gave her an excuse to play around and do different things.

Actually in one interview she said at the start of season 1, she didn't know if Parks and Rec was good and she's there to stay. She flirted with Andy to get more content and the writers liked it. She not only had to act but also think about ways to get more screentime with her improvisations. Acting is tough sometimes.

As a teacher, she reminds me of gifted students. Smart, high aptitude, clever, witty. But if not challenged/given interests, they get bored and disruptive. She’s apathetic because she hasn’t found what she is passionate about, that was her arc when she began working with Ben

as one of those kids who was called gifted until my grades didn't match... frankly, it's called ADHD, and catching it early helps the aprils in your classroom, like me :)
@12inter88
Жыл бұрын
@@mynciee I teach 11th/12th grade - often times kids ADHD process learning/stress differently compared to non-ADHD kids. If they’re in gifted/honors level, it’s usually a disaster if they’re not diagnosed by then. I often try to meet them halfway. It works! :) the two are not mutually exclusive. Some of my fave kids are ADHD. What I do hear a lot from them is they’re usually put in ESE/remedial when they were younger because many teachers didn’t know how to “handle them”, and it crushes my heart.
@XxTaiMTxX
Жыл бұрын
@@mynciee It's not really "ADHD". It's called "The classes are boring". One of my friends is ADHD. Here's what actual ADHD is: 1. Can't keep thoughts going in one direction. Penchant for even interrupting their own lines of thinking to pursue something new. 2. Obsessive interest, but no passion in that interest (the example I like to give is that my friend becomes obsessive with video games in trying to figure out how to glitch them out and experiment with them, but he's not passionate at all in the process or even the outcome, he's just seeking the randomness of it to "see something happen"). These are the two big identifiers. The problem is that big pharma, lazy teachers, and crap parents, have gotten a laundry list of behaviors added to the diagnosis just so that they can push Dope on their kids to dull their brains. "Kid is disruptive in class" isn't a symptom of ADHD. It's largely a symptom of five or six other issues you've got. 1. Kid lacks discipline. 2. Teacher doesn't garner respect from the kid. 3. The class itself is boring and since kids have energy that they need to be active frequently... 4. Kid has problems at home, so acts out as a means of stress relief (can be a sign of abuse at home, or even straight up depression). 5. Kid is psychopathic/sociopathic in some way and manipulating others is great fun for them. 6. Kid doesn't get enough attention at home or is somewhat narcisstic. Disruption gets attention. So, yes, CLEARLY we should be doping a kid to solve all of these myriad of possible and potential issues! It's such a magical and wonder drug that it cures everything by mucking with the brain chemistry of developing brains and basically dulling brain functions to "calm the kid down". ADHD is a real thing. But, the actual population who has it... exceptionally low. Especially in comparison to how many are given the drugs to deal with it. Misdiagnosis of it across the board is way too high. Why? Because "drug curbs all the behaviors the parents and teachers don't like", so, you know... who cares about later side effects of messing with the chemistry of a developing brain? Who cares if the diagnosis is incorrect? The drugs still curb the undesirable behavior! A parent who takes a more active role in the life of their child doesn't ever have children exhibiting those "disruptive behaviors". Because they've spent time learning who their child is as a person, curbing those behaviors themselves, and being actively invovled in the teaching process as well. Attend an 8 hour class with your kid and SEE WHY your kid is acting out in class. I guarantee it's mostly because the class is boring, it's stupid, or the teacher has no idea what they're doing. I was one of those "gifted" students (I don't like the word "gifted", because it implies intelligence... I'm of average intelligence. I just have innate and constant curiousity as well as an ability to engage in Critical Thinking. Things most people don't have... so I actively go out of my way to learn new things and figure out how to apply those new things to old situations/data.). I always wanted to learn something new, but when I didn't get to "learn something new" or had to do "a boring assignment that wasn't interesting in any way", then I was bored. My grades swiftly dropped in High School to "just above passing", because that's all I cared to maintain. "Working hard" and "Completing the assignments" didn't get me anything. It was all "busywork". Pointless wastes of time for no purpose. When my workplace figured out that I had an insatiable lust for knowledge and an ability to take that knowledge and apply it to make the workplace more efficient, more accountable, and have the employees more well trained? Well, suddenly I found my niche. Suddenly I was thrust into jobs and attained skills that worked for me. Basically, they made me a Supervisor/Manager/Leader because the things I was passionate about as a kid and the reasons I never completed tasks or was disruptive... are good Leadership traits. Teachers unqualified to do their jobs just have no idea how to deal with students like me who don't just "fall in line like a good sheep". So, they always recommend "get ADHD medication, so I no longer have to deal with them". ADHD should only ever be diagnosed by mental health professionals and not a basic doctor. Several things need to be ruled out by a psychiatrist/therapist before you can even ACCURATELY diagnose ADHD. But, they don't advertise that bit when they want your kid on it. Because if they did... we'd have to admit we have a problem with lazy teachers, lazy parents, and doctors getting kick backs for prescribing drugs your kids don't need.

Counterpoint: April is not intelligent. Her knowledge of facts and learning is limited to nonexistent, largely due to a lack of interest in them. Rather, she is wise as heck. She is aware of her lack of factual knowledge and interest in it, therefore she chooses to put her effort into people and the workings of their minds. Hence she is a great judge of character, always supportive when it really counts and falls for the dumbest character on the show because she immediately sees that he has a heart of gold despite his lack of brains. She is a genius with people due to her wisdom.
