Yeah, having liquid or foamy soap instead of bar soap sounds great until you get red skin on your hands after a few days. My skin can't handle too many days of non-bar soap, I've found out from when I've stayed at my aunt's house and she only has foamy soap to wash your hands with.

Probably one of the main ingredients. The bad effects from it weren't widely known yet I don't think.
