I remember this game. 17 hits, 16 singles, 23 LOB. Schmidt was still Schmidt, but Lefty was on fumes. And even though the Mets lost, you could still see they were gonna have a special year. I forgot, though, that L.A. was on the team at the time, and just as valuable. Thank you for posting!

Jeltzy with the game winning hit! It was definitely the Mets year but I definitely enjoyed the 86 Phillies because they never quit when they were down .The Phils even had a few guys from the 80 team yet and some from the 83 team..

This is cool I went to 26 Met games that year. No World Series But I was at Game 3 against the Astros when Dykstra won it and I got to run around the field when the Mets clinched the Division BUT this game in Philadelphia was the first game I saw that year, I later went to a saturday night game in Philly when the Mets had a chance to clinch but they got swept but it worked out as I said Above,

Cub fan here.....I miss the REAL NL East. Miss playing the Mets and Phillies all the time. Seems like we play AL teams as often these days. Expansion fucked up a lot of things. There STILL isn’t enough talent to have the number of teams there are today. No ridiculous playoff rules where your team wins 97 games and has to play a one game playoff. Just two divisions, one playoff series to get to the WS. Easy. Makes sense. I guess it was dumb the Braves and Reds were in the NL West at the time, but damn... NL East: Mets Phillies Pirates Cubs Cardinals Expos Those were the days.

Funny how the beginning of the year saw a ground ball go through the legs of 1B Hernandez that led to the loss of the game for the Mets, and the end of the year saw the most famous ground ball in Mets history go through the legs of 1B Buckner that led to a win for the Mets.

I attended this game at age 11 and remember it very well. All looked lost before Steve Jeltz (of all people) laced that 2-run triple to the gap. It was a point of pride that that Phillies were the only NL team to field a winning reciord against the Mets in 1986.

I actually recall seeing this game on a TV set (in one of those sporting goods stores) over at Sherway Gardens (in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada) that particular afternoon (especially when Glenn Wilson came up to bat for the Phillies). If anything, what I really observed that day was that the New York Mets were wearing a commemorative patch on the left sleeves of their jerseys (in honour of 1986 also being the Mets 25th season of existence in baseball).

Funny to see Dave Stewart in a Phillies uniform before being released then the A's picked him up at mid-season back in '86. In fact his first start in a A's uniform was against the Red Sox where he beat Roger Clemens who would go on to win the American League Cy Young Award and MVP. Steward would have four straight 20-win seasons from 1987-1990 and never lost in the ALCS when with the A's.

This was the case of the extra innings craze. This game: the Mets/Phillies matchup, the third GOW game White Sox/Tigers (seen and removed from KZread), Angels/Brewers whereby Gary Pettis collides with another fielder (not seen on KZread) and again which got him suspended at one point. None could ever compare to the Jay Randolph and Joe Morgan the "Epic at Expo Park" (what I would call it) when the Cardinals prevailed in 17 innings against the Expos; this cancelled the White Sox/Red Sox broadcast. I never got to see the end of this saga for I was gone. Perhaps the Twins/Angels never made it on the air whereby Phil Stone and Jim Kaat never had the opportunity to make a living that day. I don't know if fans ever have enjoyed the second GOW game like the first.

  • @DalekPlague

This Cardinals/Expos Game of the Week did eventually cancel both the White Sox/Red Sox as well as the Twins/Angels second half of the doubleheader game. It would be nice if that game would be available here on KZread so long as MLB has the copyright and a disclaimer is mentioned at the bottom. That would certainly be interesting to watch. I have never seen the conclusion of the game for I was obliged to attend a special event elsewhere.

Stewart Goodwin What an absolute joke. Keith Hernandez who was on suspension but allowed to play under conditions that he took a random drug test during the 1986 season, said they never tested him once. There was more cocaine in baseball in the 1980s then there was bubblegum. What a politician he would have made. He has lied through his teeth the entire interview from having no political aspirations to saying our minor-leaguers are tested for drugs regularly which never happened then or now, except possibly for steroids rarely.

I'll forever side-eye Ueberroth for allowing NBC to lose the MLB TV rights to CBS and their $1.2 billion at the end of the 1989 season. As Dick Ebersol put it, Ueberroth was totally focused on business. Ebersol said "Ueberroth wanted his legacy to be the maximum amount of money. Baseball got this enormous overbid with CBS, coupled with expanding the cable package (on ESPN) from zero to four nights a week. Now, when they find themselves in trouble, they've got no place to expand. There just wasn't a lot of foresight. (Baseball was) just looking for the big score."
