The building with the dome on top (3:00) is the rawinsonde building. You can't see from the taxiway but there are three roll-up doors on the other side. Pending on what way the wind was blowing determined which door you used to launch the balloon. That's where we launched weather balloons ever day at 00Z and 12Z. I must have launched 200 balloons from that building.

Spent 22 months (8/73 - 6/75) on Adak assigned as AIMD airframes and power plants divoff. Appreciate the glimpse of the AIMD hangar as the aircraft taxied past enroute to the terminal. When I first got my orders for Adak I thought I'd been sent to Siberia (close!). As it turned out, I had a great time. Lot of fond memories. Not too many days like the one in this vid, though. When I was there and the sun came out, we secured to duty section, went outside and soaked up the sunshine. Fell in love with fresh salmon up there. Had some just last night. Sad to see some of these other vids with all the deterioration of the base facilities but I guess Navy Adak's mission has been accomplished.

We might have been on the same Reeves Aleutian flight out. USN -CT at the lagoon from 6-74 to 6-75. 365+a hook. And uh... only saw one sunny day the entire time I was there. I don't remember the straight in over the water approach. What I remember is that crazy spiral in down between the mountains like we getting ready to strafe the island.

Thanks for the video. Everything looks so modern - LOL. I well remember Reeves Aleutian Airlines and flying into the island in 1964. I was fortunate to spend a little over a year on Adak. We have sunshine half days off - 7 of them in a year. I spent all my time at Clam Lagoon and only went "downtown" when flying in and flying out. Great memories though.

Did some work there in 13 & 14 , the lady that works at the airport also works at the post office and the grocery store. Two planes land a week , one on Wednesday and another on sunday.

Nice vid. AArgh! If you'd been on the other side of the plane, I could've got a glimpse of my favorite fishing stream (under the bridge at the end of the runway) and my house (halfway down the main runway in upper armpit (amulet))

Curious to know why there's a fire truck waiting for then following the plane. Was this an unplanned/emergency landing of some sort, or maybe something wrong with the plane that they wanted one on standby just in case?

This is usual in Adak. They only have 1 fire truck for the airport and it's only staffed when the Alaska airlines flight comes in. There are no good places to stage the truck so they park on the side of the runway and make sure everything goes ok due to Adaks limited resources.

I served on the crash crew from late 77 to late 78 as a flightline fire fighter. A crash truck stays on standby for any aircraft arriving or departing. I'm searching for film of the crash house and birchwood barracks where I stayed.

This is actually on every single airfield, everywhere. This airfield is so small, and so light on traffic, that the crash crew sticks out like a sore thumb. There are crash crew stationed on every airfield in case of emergency landings, crashes, etc. but on a larger field, they blend in with everything that goes on. Make a "Where's Waldo" game out of it next time you are at the airport!
