Abandoned houses & control tower in Adak, Alaska Day 3

    I was deployed to Adak in 1990-1991 flying the P-3 Orion. Those houses were new-"ish" at the time and quite a shock to see in such a remote location. Likewise, that McDonald's was quite a shock and I'll never forget chatting with the tower at Shemya or Attu about our shock at spending a deployment in Adak and how much it differed from our home base in Hawaii (Barber's Pt - now also abandoned). The controller responded to our complaints about Adak with a dry, "At least Adak has a McDonald's". He made us laugh and shamed us at the same time, so the following week we bought 25 Big Macs at that MacDonald's and hand delivered to the tower who had taught us something about gratitude. I believe the Mexican restuarant (near the "forest") that you mentioned in one of your other videos from Adak was an Italian resutarant when I was there. One of the waitresses was from Long Island and brought her accent with her. As a native New Yorker, she was a comfort. I see from a few of your panning shots that our barracks hasn't fared too well over the years. What a shame. Lots of good times there. Yes, Adak was once a bustling place. I was told at the time I was there that it was the 4th largest community in the state of Alaska and would regularly be visited by politicians seeking office. That's probably how the island got a MacDonald's. Oh well. Ashes to ashes.

    Wow, thanks a lot for the descriptive comment. I always wondered how it was like during those bustling times. It's hard to find any videos from those times, so I can only imagine how it used to be. I went in 2012 and it was all abandoned with only 300 people left, but I definitely could see how it housed much more people in the past, especially by walking through that abandoned high school. I always wanted to go check out Shemya or Attu island, but it's off limits as it's only for the military. Nice to hear you got to see so many remote places that are hard to reach. I have visited other parts of Alaska like Little Diamede Island, so I'll get around to posting those videos later.

    No, thank you! I’m really enjoying your videos in Adak..... But I have to admit I’m jealous. You got to see some sunshine there! I was there from early December of 90 to June of 91. I don’t recall seeing any sun. In fact, I had to walk down a taxiway one typical “Adak night” to file a flight plan. The wind not only knocked me down, it blew me about 30’ across the taxiway and ice until I could find some traction in a snow bank. It was nuts; and we were nuts because we’d fly in weather like that. (By the way, that control tower was state of the art back then! I never would’ve thought they would let that go to pot.) There’s a book about a P-3 flying out of Adak in the early or mid 80s that had to ditch in the Bering Sea. I don’t know if it’s still in print, might be available electronically, it’s title is, “Adak: The Rescue of Alpha Foxtrot 586”. That book really sums up what it was like to fly maritime patrol in the Aleutians back then. Quite a history in those islands. Thanks for your videos! I plan on watching them a few times to help resurrect some memories.

    I lived on Adak '54-58 as a youngster when my dad was a subcontractor dockhand for the Navy. The housing then as I've seen from photos looked like poured concrete walls and I understand were all demolished because of asbestos. I have nothing but good memories there and actually recall things like a few outings to the hills and seashore. I also remember the bowling alley which had a large open grill that was pretty fascinating, the K-12 school, pool where I learned to swim, movie theater, and roller skating rink. My mom who is still alive said those were good years with memories such as having lonely young sailors over for dinners and holidays. Thanks for the video!

    Adak was my duty station from December 1969, to December 1970. I loved it there, was even able to get my (new) wife up there for two months, we did a LOT of exploring, hiking and just walking around. Saw Mt. Sitka blow it's top, (felt it too) !!! Spent many hours at the bowling alley, and the roller-skating rink. That "High Security Area" ?? that was my duty station, along with the Armory. I was NOT guarding it, I was working in the 'shops', with "The Advanced Undersea Weapons" that the others were talking about. I made several trips out to Shagak (?) Bay, and on one trip I brought back the skull of a Killer Whale, It was mostly intact and kinda cool looking, so I gave it to the High School, for their Science Department. When I was there the 'trees', in the Adak National Forest weren't much bigger than the sign announcing its self !!! Great memories, thanks for the videos ...

    So I was the last Navy Air Traffic Controller to use that tower. I did not leave it like that back in March of 1997. In fact, I had left post-it notes to show what worked and what didn’t and what was what. Too bad people destroyed it and made it useless.

    I was stationed on Adak from 3/78 to 11/79 as an air traffic controller, so I spent a lot of time in that tower. We were very short staffed for about 8 months myself and one other controller were the only two facility rated . So we worked two days on then two days off . I also worked part-time for Reeve Aleutian. Good fishing and bird hunting. Sad to see the tower and operations building in such bad shape from the weather.

    Would appreciate any answers from those who lived / live there. - i can't get my head around there being no police on the island. There must be some crime? - is there any social security? Presumably if you don't work, there's no income? - are the groceries very expensive and limited? - do Amazon deliver!?!

  • @JaysWorldTravels

    @JaysWorldTravels

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, Amazon delivers, but it just costs more. Groceries can be bought on the island or ordered online and shipped by plane. There is two flights per week. There are no police, but there is usually one person who is the VPSO (Village Public Safety Officer). If anything happens, you call him.

    How would somebody go about buying a house on Adak island? 5,000$ per house is a great deal! If I was a millionaire, I’d go buy a house in adak just for the hell of it, I’d buy a whole section of the neighborhood, and create a private neighborhood for myself and fix up all the houses.
